Removing Grease from Baby Blanket

In the hopes that my daughter would take a much needed nap in her stroller, I brought her white lovie blanket with us. Of course, she kicked off the blanket and it became tangled in the stroller wheel and covered with black grease. I've washed it twice with oxyclean, dreft stain remover and tide free and clear detergent and it still has some black stains on it. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I have found that Lestoil (smells bad - but works great) works good on things that have an oily residue to them, put some on the spot and let it sit for awhile before washing. I have also found that the new Shout Advanced works awesome on set in stains, you can let it soak for up to a week before washing, and I hear it works awesome on grease stains. It's a bit pricey, but so worth it. Good luck!!

Erin,
Try Lestoil on the blanket and then wash it a couple of times, the Lestoil should take it right out but it has a strong smell of it's own you need to get out, like really strong lemons and cleaner smell.

When I was in the Army I was a mechanic so I got into the grease a lot. Try making a paste out of baking soda and water and scrub that into the grease spots and let sit, then wash. You can even add baking soda to the wash as an added kick. It might take some elbow "grease" to scrub it but I found the baking soda very helpful for my BDU's. I hope this helps.

It sounds like you have used a lot of the safe products out there....is there any way that you could buy her another blanket that's just like her white lovie blanket?
It's so cute when babies dedicate one blanket or stuffed animal as their security...but it's also tragic when something happens to it!
Good luck!

Hello Erin,
Try Dawn dish washing soap. Let it soak and then, using something hard, like the edge of a comb, rub it going with the grain of the material. Although if you have washed and dried the blanket it probably wont come out but you can always try. Dawn also works good on any type of oil or greese stain.

A couple of suggestions. Try a little bit of Lestoil. If that doesn't work dilute a little bit of bleach in alot of water and let the area where the stain is sit in the water.
Be sure it is just a little bit of bleach so the blanket doesn't turn yellow. I would try the Lestoil first.
This worked for me on several different articles of clothing that were very expensive and that I cherished.

Hope this helps.

this same thing happened to us, and the other poster who suggested DAWN is right. I tried it figuring they use it on seabirds contaminated from oil spills so it must work on a blanket, and it did. You might need to use a nailbrush or a toothbrush to work it into the fabric if the blanket is fuzzy or has a high pile. Ours was satin on one side and had a plush side so the grease had gotten really into the fabric. I actually now use dawn to clean almost everything, I dilute it and put it in a spray bottle and it cleans everything beautifully, even windows with no streaks. good luck.

Try Goo Gone. You can buy it at most grocery stores and places like Home Depot. You may still have to do it a couple of times, but it usually gets the tough stuff out.

My daycare provider swears by Grease Lightening. She gets it in the automotive section and it comes in an orange spray bottle. I've also seen it in the household section but in a different bottle. I'm not sure if it's the same strength.

Lestoil works on grease. My dad was a baker and always came home from work with grease/oil on his shirts. Mom always washed them using Lestoil and that was 50 years ago.

This is a little late, but in general any oil based stain can be drowned in baby powder, then left to sit, then shaken off and reapplied, as needed until finally - washed. THe trick is to truly drown the stain in the powder, don't rub it in or try to clean it in any other way first. If it comes into contact with water, at all, it won't work.
Grease might be more tricky, so this maybe wouldn't have worked anyway, but I thought it was a tip worth putting out there, anyway. It's a miracle remedy for so many other oil-based stains.

Sorry about the blanket. I hope you find a solution.
(You can always put a nice patch over it 8-)

Good luck!

Try WD-40. It takes a LOT of stuff out of fabrics, carpets, etc. Just spray it on & rub with a paper towel; repeat until gone (hopefully!). Good luck!

I was going to suggest Oxyclean myself but you already tried that. My mom swears by Lestoil for greasy type stains. Rub the lestoil on the grease spot and rub in, let it sit for a while and then wash as usual with your detergent. I have seen my mom get grease stains out of white jeans for my neice. I couldn't believe it worked! Good luck!!!

This may sound wierd but try adding dish washer soap (like cascade) to the water. It has always worked for me, but be careful it can only be used on whites because it contains bleach. Good Luck!

Have you tried bleaching it in the washer? Or, if not adding bleach to your wash, spot-treating it with bleach on a Q-Tip. If you don't like the idea of bleach residue after the wash, just wash it again in a regular wash to remove remnants and odor.

Shout Triple Acting. I live by that stuff. It took out old car greese from my husband's jacket over the winter. It has taken out blood stains, chocolate stains, greese and dirt. Just make sure you spray enough on there to almost soak it and let it dry. I had to do it a few times before putting it in the washer, but its better than elbow grease :) Hope it works for you.

Erin,
There are two things I would recommend. First try using Simple Green; just spray it on the stain and rub it in. You should let it sit for maybe 10 minutes; that should take care of the problem. The second thing to try is using dish washing soap on the stain (actually any grease/oil stain). Just rub it in and wash. Good luck!

HAIR SPRAY!!! Saturate the area with hair spray and let it sit for a few minutes. Wash as usual. You may have to repeat the procedure a few times to get it all out. If you have dried the blanet in the dryer, you may not be able to get it completely grease free. This hint was told to me by my auto mechanic many years ago and it has never failed me.

Hi I have found a great product call Pre-Spot and Solumel, they work wonders together. Solumel will take the stain out of just about anything. The Pre-spot is from the same company and you just spray it on the fabric, let it set for about 5 minutes and wash like regular. It will take the stain out. The products are also made with all natural ingredients. The company that they come from is Melaleuca. Call me at ###-###-#### for more information on them. I work for a company that sets up accounts for them.

Oxy Baby Spray is the best! Soak it with the spray and let it sit for a while and then wash it. Repeat as needed (don't dry until the stain is out). You can buy it at Babies R Us. It is the only place that I have seen the spray form and that is the stuff that works! Good Luck!

try break cleaner. yes, car break cleaner. spray it on right before you throw it in the wash. it will smell like it a little bit when you take it out of the wash, but when you take it out of the dryer, it will be fine. my uncle operates big cranes, and is always covered in the stuff. my aunt swears by it. ive used it, and it does take out pretty much all stains! let me know how it turns out!!!

Try Lestoyl, it smells terrible but I know it does work. Or the other thing is try Grease lightening. I know it seems kind of harsh but you might have to wash it a few times to make sure you don't have any funky smells. It will be clean!

Shaklee's "Nature Bright" is a non-toxic laundry booster and stain remover. It is granular and is meant to be mixed with warm water. I suggest that you mix one scoop of Nature Bright with hot water in a basin/sink and soak the baby blanket for several hours. Then, rinse and squirt some Shaklee liquid laundry detergent directly on any remaining signs of the grease spot and wash in the washing machine. This should remove all signs of the grease. Another gal dropped a leaking printer black ink cartridge on her mint-green carpet and couldn't get it out. She mixed up some Nature Bright and rubbed it on the ink stain and left it for a while. Then she went back and soaked everything up with a clean towel. To her shock, the ink was GONE!! I can't guarantee anything, but it's worth a try. I happen to be a Shaklee distributor and will be happy to answer any questions and speak with you. Contact me anytime at ###-###-#### or ____@____.com You can order directly from my web site at www.emilytaft.com Just click into "Home Care" on the menu at the left of the Home Page. Then click into "Laundry " on the sub-menu that appears. Choose the laundry detergent that you want and put it in your cart. Then choose "Nature Bright" and put it in your cart. If you wish to pay Wholesale prices (15% off retail just as at Sam's, Costco, & BJ's), a pop-up will give you that opportunity for $19.95. I will speak with you about these or any other products if you wish. Good luck - I really hope you are successful in getting rid of the grease. Nature Bright has removed many very old stains for me. Hi Erin,
If you cover the stains with Dawn dishwashing liquid and let it sit for a day the stains should be gone after you wash the blanket. This is a really good way to get stains out, including chocolate, spaghetti sauce and grease. Hope it works!
