Ring Size Change After Pregnancy?

Has anyone else had issues with getting wedding bands to fit postpartum? My swelling in hands and feet is *finally* gone, but my knuckles seem to be bigger...is this permanent, or will my knuckles return to normal eventually, too? I'm now 2 weeks out from having my first baby, a girl. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all for your advice & well wishes. I'm going to hold off for a few months to see if things go back to pre-pregnancy size before I drop any $$ on resizing rings. Thanks so much to everyone for sharing your insights and experiences!

I think it took me about two months to get my wedding bands back on the way they were before the pregnancy.

My fingers never regained shape. I just got my wedding ring resized a few months ago. My kids are now 6 and 7!
The most notable and permenant thing for me was going from a size 7 shoe to a size 8. I'd never heard of that before. :-)

I had the same issues. Give your knuckles some time and I promise they will go down. I think it took about 8 weeks or so for mine to go back to normal. I also had numbness in my fingers. And, it wasnt until I quit nursing, 13 mo later that everything went back to normal (for some reason I had become alergic to my rings, and would get little blisters under them), so if you are nursing, you may want to just sit back and give yourself the time and room for the change that your body is going through. Good luck.

Hi J.,

I gained and lost (immediately) exactly the same amount of weight with my first pregnancy. My rings didn't fit for several months later but everything got back to normal then....I do notice that they get a little tighter the day after I eat out or at a church potluck. I really think the salt and other stuff that is not normally in my diet affects my hands. I'm sure your diet isn't exactly the same now that the baby is born as it was while you were pregnant.

Don't go spending money on resizing, lol!

My baby is 6.5 months and I still can't wear my wedding rings. I'm going to have them re-sized next month. :(

Ahhh,
I'm having the same problem! My son is almost 6 months old and I still can't fit into any of my rings. And, it does seem like my knuckles are permanently swollen. I've stopped breastfeeding, so if it was water retention, that should have subsided, but still no luck with my rings. My wedding band makes my finger turn purple (ouch!)
My mom said that her hands and feet permanently grew after pregnancy, so maybe it's hereditary?

It was permanent for me too! I finally had my ring re-sized when my son was 1.5 years old because I figured that was enough time! Give yourself a few months to make sure you aren't one of the lucky ones that will have things go back to normal, but I was not so lucky. I wore a size 8 shoe before and now I wear a 9. I'm pregnant again and hope I don't have to pay to get my platnum ring re-sized again!!

Just a word of advice. Your body didn't change over night, it took 9 months(10 lunar months)to get to the completed change. Give your body time to get back to "normal". You are more than likely still retaining fluid, some people take longer than others to let it all go. My knuckles are big already, but I was still able to wear my rings after I delievered.

Good luck and congratulations on your new baby!

Yes, when I was pregnant me and my husband got married. The ring that I had was stuck on my finger for the longest. Since my hands swelled so much!! But eventually I was able to take it off. Also what helped me was soap and water. But yes eventually your knuckles will get back to the way they use to be and then your ring will come off. But for now try soap and water or lotion.

With the first couple children my ring fit the whole time until the last 3-4 weeks of pregnancy. Then about 2-3 weeks after delivery I could get it back on again. The third pregnancy caused my rings to not fit in the second trimester until a few months after delivering. My ring stopped fitting almost immediately into the 4th pregnancy. He'll be one next month and I still can't get it on. I'm going to resize them soon. I'm back at the pre-baby weight, but that's one thing that didn't shrink back. Just like some women get bigger feet that never go back to being the pre-baby size. You could be one of the people that hands won't go completely back to what they were before. But give it time before resizing.
Congrats on the baby!

You need to give your body a bit longer to readjust. I think it took me about 4 months before things were relatively normal. Your swelling may look like its gone bu there could still be some left over. Too bad things dont go back to normal the minute our babies po out, wouldn't that be great!!

Mine fit fine now! I'm sure it happens to some, but I don't know of anyone that it has happened to before!

Best of luck!

One of the changes that your body goes through during pregnancy is that your joints expand. You may notice not only are your hips wider (obviously) and your knuckles may be larger, but also your feet will be bigger as well. When I got pregnant with my first son, I wore size 7 1/2 shoe. I now have 4 munchkins and I now wear size 9 1/2. It's just a biological fact. I've had to have my wedding ring resized already, and still need to get it resized from my last pregnancy. No more children, I can't afford to get it resized any more.
