I was hoping we could drive during the night, but that is not going to happen. So now I need to find ways to keep a 9 and 7 year old amused during a 10 hour car ride we are taking at the end of the month. Anybody have any suggestions. We also have a 4 month old. Any suggestions how I keep him amused? I figured we would take an hour break twice during the trip. It will make it longer but more pleasant. We are traveling from Michigan to North Carolina. Any suggestions what we should break for? Thanks everyone!

What can I do next?

There are portable board games like checkers or chess with magnetic pieces. Coloring books and other books to read. I love wrapping surprise gifts for the children (nothing expensive). I show them the boxes with the ribbons and paper with their names on it. I offer it to the kid who is the quietest on the trip.

For our road trips I was always sleep until we got to our destination. My sister and cousin stayed awake. On extended road trips with the six kids, we didn't but the oil kids with the vinegar kids because they just couldn't mix well if you know what I mean but with two you should have any of that bickering if possible. Make sure they are well fed and you have plenty of snacks for them to eat along the way, a wide mouth jar for emergency rest room stops, and their favorite blanket and pillow.

Portable DVD, we got one at Target w/2 monitors on sale for like $90.00. It totally helped on our 10 hour drive. Ours were 1 and 3 at the time, one 4 months potty trained. We split it in half. Also play games with them like the alphabet game. finding something on a sign with each letter of the alphabet, it keeps them thinking and concentrating on things other than "are we there yet". =) Maybe get some travel games that they could play when you want a break. Good luck and have fun.

My BFF and I take several road trips a year. Between the 2 of us we have a 9 yr. old boy, 2 7 yr. old girls, and a rowdy, probably ADHD little 3 year old. We stop every 2 hours at a park or restaurant with a playground for snacks. We have things like nuggets and parfaits and apple dippers. If we are in a park we usually break out the fresh fruit and juice boxes. Kids don't process time like adults. They just feel the discomfort of their hiney's, the need to go pee, the extreme boredom, the monotony of the highway scenery, etc...

Along with the kids being more physically and mentally able to get back in the vehicle we also have the break and feel better and more alert when we resume the trip.

She bought her kids individual DVD players and they pack in the movies. She bought splitters so that when they put on the headsets to hear their movies other kids can add headsets too. She also brings their DS hand held games and any other items the kids can hold in their lap and use. I bring books and Barbie's, and coloring books and crayons.

If we are in a hurry and don't make the regular stops we KNOW IT. The kids start bickering, they start doing silly, ornery, things like banging each other on the heads with empty water bottles, or just silly things like getting the 3 year old to say "You're goofy" or other not so nice things that aren't bad just not what I want to hear.

One thing we have found, when she had her Venture Warner's Brother edition van and the DVD player was built in, don't take movies you can't stand to hear over and over and over and over...the sound track to many movies will just be annoying and drive you nuts...hence the portable DVD players and individual headsets in her new van.

So, to enjoy a road trip with kids:

Stop often, they need to move and run, more stops only need about 30 minutes each for RR breaks and running around. Full meals need more time for running and playing plus eating.

Have snacks avail. in the vehicle and also at the stops, have a mini picnic.

Remember to keep their mind's busy

Space the kids so they have lots of individual space. Put toys in a bag on the seat in front of them of beside them. Have some variety.

A portable DVD player with a few movies. The first time our kids used theirs, I was amazed. It was just too quiet.

If they can read in the car (I get severe headaches just glancing at the map) books. If not, audio books.

I would keep a cooler in the car and stop at a rest area for a picnic.
