Road Trip Advice with One Year Old

Hi Travel Moms out there - My husband and I are considering driving, vs. flying, out east (15 hours from Chicago to Delaware Shore)in August. We are going to stay 2+ weeks (making car rental expensive) so driving looks appealing. Our main worry is for our one year old daughter. She naps twice a day for about two hours, but the rest of the time I keep her active! Any advice from other Mom's about when to start the drive, how long the intervals should be, should one of us always ride in back with her, toys, games, etc. Anything you can recommend to help us decide whether we should fly or drive would be great!

What can I do next?

We've driven to east PA a couple times with our son. The best was when we drove through the night when he slept the most. Otherwise we would break the trip into two days and sleep at a hotel half-way and take a lot of little breaks so he could run a little. Take a couple new toys and some children music CD's.

My husband and I drove to Louisiana for Christmas with our one year old son and 2 and a half year old daughter (then). We began the drive just after they ate dinner, had sippy cups and milk/water ready in a cooler and yes, the dvd player was a lifesaver. Afew small toys coiuld come in handy but we didn't use ours. But the late night drive was the best. We never would have made it in such good time had we attempted during the day. THey would have been much to antsy. Good luck and have a safe trip.

We have taken our 10.5 month old son on long drive trips. He is very active and bores easily. We stopped every 2-3 to stretch legs and look at scenery. Also games and portable DVD player for car. Elmo really helps!!!!

We did the Chicago to Florida trip with our daughter when she was 13 month old and our life saver was a DVD player and some new videos that she has not seen, also we bought her a few new toys that were interactive that we showed to her for the first time in the car when she was getting antsy......Also when you stop to eat try and find some where (if she is walking) that she can get down on the ground and run off a little steam....if you have any other questions let me know.....we have also taken her on a 5 hour to WI, and a 7 hour to PA.
