Road Trip to Corpus Christi

I am planning to travel to Corpus Christi for the State Autism Conference in September. I was wondering how long it takes to drive down there, from Frisco, keeping in mind that I have twin 4 year olds to tote around. Or, do moms think it's better to fly? Please weigh in.

What can I do next?

K.,

It would take 7 hours to drive straight through but I'm sure with 2 4 year olds you probably would have to add one hour at least for breaks and potty stops.

If you can afford to fly, I would suggest flying. You can fly out of DFW on Southwest round trip for about $170/person or on American for about $178/seat. The trip is about 2 hrs in flight.

Good luck!

We've done the drive with tots in tow and it can stretch to 9 hours once you count all the stops to give the kids a break. Honestly, however, our flights down there haven't been any more pleasant. There are long lines in the airport, and ALWAYS delays in that route (have no idea why, but we've had at least an hour delay every time). At least on the road trip we can plan in something fun. If you have a portable DVD player, you should be able to survive the long, empty drive between San Antonio and Corpus. Before that, we usually stop in West or Waco, and there are great parks in New Braunfels/San Marcos for kids to run off some steam. Other times, when there might be a melt down in the car, we have been known to stop at roadside picnic areas just to run circles around the car :-).

We just came back from Port Aransas this past weekend with our twin 3 year olds. So I know exactly what it's like. Port A is a little further (I think) than Corpus. It's about 50 miles between Corpus and Port A. With construction and stopping at McD's to let the kids run off some energy, the drive took us about 8 1/2 hours. The drive was a little nerve racking at times when there were only 2 lanes between cement walls b/c of construction. The truckers would have to swerve over into our lane and we came within inches of being hit by a trucker. Talk about scary. I'm already a nervous wreck in traffic so I really disliked the drive. If flying wasn't so much work I would've loved to have flown, but with all the gear we needed to take for the kids it did make more sense to drive. And I'm sure it was a lot cheaper than buying 4 plane tickets.
You can contact me if you have any other questions.

I've done the trip both ways (flying and driving). Driving takes about 10-11 hours from Frisco (there are not a lot of family friendly rest stops with changing tables or playgrounds). Flying is just so much quicker and there is not any traffic at the Corpus Christi airport coming in or leaving.

My girls (ages 3 & 5) & I travel down to my in-laws that live W. of New Braunfels every 3 months. It's about 3 hours N. of Corpus. I ALWAYS bring our porta potty for quick stops & that saves a lot of time since I tend to limit my water intake.
We always have our portable DVD player; lots of kids music & silly car games.

I think driving is more fun than getting stuck at an airport but that's my opinion.

Have fun in Corpus!!
