So i am having major problems with a back tooth well 2nd to back on the top, i went to dentist yesterday and he says i need a root canal and crown done. I have beautiful teeth i really dont want one pulled even tho you probably wouldnt be able to see it if i smiled im only 30 and dont wanna start losing teeth. Now major issue is i have no insurance i am currently on medicaid because i am pregnant but i have called all day and can not find a dentist that does canals that accepts adult medicad. the cost for a root and crown is at least 1600 and there is just no way i can come up with that anytime soon without missing a car payment or two. I did apply for care credit which i was denied do to bad credit. So what do ya think ? Anyone had a tooth pulled and regreted it ? im torn i really am . I havent found a dentist yet that does any tyoe of payment plans which i was hoping for. O and i did get the ok from my OBGYN to get work done i know alot of people say u cant while pregnant but he said it would be fine as long as i wasnt put to sleep. Any advice would be great

I had a back 2nd bottom pulled this past summer what a difference too could not come up with the 1500 and thqat was with dental ins. I ahd it pulled for 170. it does take a while to heal now i dont even notice it and when I smile you cant see it. I did feel funny like some hilljack who could not take of their teeth. But I got over that I have great teeth no cavs but it was just a tooth I broke when I was 5yo and it took 31 years for it to bother me. get it pulled you will be fine.

A friend of mine had her teeth all taken care of years ago at a dental school. She was able to make payments and the total cost was less than half what it would cost at a regular dental office. The students are supervised and are usually in their last year or interns just like MDs are required to do. You could try university or colleges to see if they have a dental school office and see what they charge.

I had to have one pulled a few years ago. you can't see it. The root canal that was done on it didn't get caped in time.
It's fine. You can get a fake one put in when you have the money or have insurance.

I had a so called root canal done on a back tooth years ago and she didn't do it correctly. So... now it hurts and my only options are pulling it and they will insert a spacer or having a oral surgeon go in and trying to fix it. Talk about money and pain!! I would just get it pulled and get on with it! Good luck mama

Pulling would be a last resort for me. If you do, your teeth will realign if you don't get something in it's place. Back or not, it can effect you down the road with your teeth and bone structure.

I would continue to search for a dentist that would allow you to make payment plans. Not through some credit company, through his business only.

We choose not to carry dental insurance because we feel it is a waste, however, we all have great teeth. When we do need something, we get a cash discount. $1600 sounds about right on your estimate.

I'd go to a dental school before I'd pull a tooth as well.

Good luck finding someone who will work with you.

surely there must be ONE dentist that takes medicaid no?? If not, look for dentists who have sliding scale fees (they'll adjust the price to your income). Good luck!

I had a root canal and regretted it. I had heard all the teeth shifting arguments of why not to pull, and decided on a root canal. Years later I began to hear about how root canals can play a role in weakened immunity and degenerative diseases. Look it up if it interests you.

If there is ANY way that you can do the root canal and crown, you should. This is related to the interaction between your teeth and the jaw bone. When a tooth is pulled or lost some way, there is a natural deterioration in the jaw bone, and there is nothing to be done about that. Weakening the bone is never a good choice, when you have one. A root canal and crowned tooth is still your tooth, and does not have the same consequences for your bones. I completely understand the money side of your dilemma, but I hope you can find a way to keep the tooth.

Good luck.

Is there a dental school near you where you can have it done cheaper?

One thing you might look into is a credit card called Care Credit. I think there is no interest on the first 3 months. Make sure your dentist will take it though. http://www.carecredit.com/

pull it as I said in your last question. As for you teeth shifting... IF it does happen it wont be for years. In that time you can get a spacer or something if your self concious about it. I have had teeth pulled in the back and none of my teeth have shifted nor have any grown longer. It has been 5+ years since they have been pulled. You cant see them gone, they haven't changed my jaw in any way. The teeth being gone hasn't changed anything in my mouth or teeth other than leaving them healthy and money in my bank account.

I had a back tooth pulled and did not regret it. No brainer for me when you look at the cost vs the benefit.
Here's the fine print. You have to get the spacer or bridge put in. Otherwise, your teeth will start to spread, allowing cavity causing junk to get in between your teeth. You have to floss religiously to be sure those in between spaces don't get cavities. If they do, It's double bad. Because it sits there and eats away at both teeth so you have to then repair both of them.
