Rotting Meat Smell in Basement

Our meat freezer was accidentally unplugged and all of the meat defrosted and went bad. My husband cleaned the freezer several times and the smell is gone. BUT the smell in the room won't go away. He took everything out of the room and bleached the floor. The entire house smelled like bleach for days. We thought the smell was gone. But it wasn't. Once the bleach smell wore off the rotten meat smell returned. HELP. Any ideas how to get rid of the smell?

What can I do next?

aah yes... this is horrible smell to try and get out of an area. I would try leaving boxes of baking soda and bowls of lemons out that would absorb the odor. If you have cardboard boxes, remove the old and repack them. Anything that the order may have penetrated would need to be cleans or removed. This should remove any traces of the odor. Good Luck!

perhaps a de-humidifer would work?? we use one in the basement laundry area which can smell when damp...it helps take out the smell.

I would say try a de-humdifier. I also hear coal gets rid of bad smells.

What about changing the furnace filter?

I agree with D.P. Vinegar will do the trick! Especially if you heat up a bowl of it in the microwave and set it in the room that has the meat smell (you may have to set two or three bowls depending on the size of the room). Try that before you go to any other extremes and risk paying more! Good Luck!

and air filter that uses ozone. My in-laws swear they can clear out the smoking smell in dingy hotel rooms with it.

Hmm, you sure there isn't a dead body under the floorboards? I just got an idea for that novel I want to write. :)

I would call a house hold remediation team. The companies that help clean-up after fire or water damage.
I know some people that had a bad wood and plastic fire in their house 2 years ago. That cleaning crew specializes in accidents, etc.... and got the smell out!

Sit out some bowls of vinegar over a period of several days. That should do the trick.

It almost sounds like you're missing something? Did the meat juices leak onto something? (Throw rug, carpet, rags, anything?) The back of the fridge? Under the fridge? Hmmmmmm.....
I would think your homeowners policy would cover the cost of a restoration team cleaning.
An ozone machine might work. (They are used all the time in mausoleums where the smell would be really bad without them!)

Shaklee used to sell an AirSource that cleaned the air. It would work, but it was discontinued this past year. See if you can find someone that has one in your area. They are not cheap.......probably why Shaklee had to discontinue. If you are interested let me know I may have a friend that has an extra to sell.

Keep your doors and windows open. The bleach can be dangerous to your lungs.

Something similar happened to us... Guess what, we were missing something... As we were cleaning out the freezer, a small package of meat we had divided was behind something. It had been missed in the trow out. Fell under a baseboard area. We also noticed that the blood had leaked down the back of the freezer. When this happened, it gathered under that little metal tray under the freezer. I cleaned that and threw away the towels and instantly the smell went away. So I would check for any missed meat and then any missed leaks. Good luck!
