Sleepless sleepover - girls come on a Friday night, in pajamas, from 6 - 10pm. Make their own pizzas and have a scavenger hunt ( I have a great scavenger hunt list for a neighborhood scavenger hunt that I put together - just personal message me if you want it.)
Also, a "survivor-type game for the brave (Bait shops can help with the gooiest bugs!). There are a lot of ideas you can do with that, too, if she's adventuresome and is not a real girly-girl.
Have a bond fire/cookout, in your back yard. Go to a roller rink or rent a local pool for a couple hours. Or if there is a local place for you to rent a gym, you can have cake, and set up a volley ball game or dodge ball.
Our favorite parties are making a homemade tacos/fajita buffet or making homemade pizzas (having the dough and the girls press it and add their own toppings) and just playing a few games. I have some game ideas too if you need them.
Going to the movies and creating a "movie" treat bag (instead of a party bag) is fun.
Good luck.
For Tara's 8th birthday we had a food fight party. It started when we saw the movie Hook with Robin Williams and they had the food fight scene. Tara said that would be fun, a huge food fight. I said, "we could do that for your party" and that was how the idea was born. The kids LOVED the idea of getting to food fight and it was a hit.
Here is what we did
*Invitation read "Don't come neat, don't come clean, just come ready to make the biggest mess you've ever seen!" I had instructions on there for them to wear clothes that could be thrown away and clean clothes (including underwear) in a bag.
*we labeled each bag as the kids arrived and hung them up. In the back yard I had created multiple dressing rooms from towels and ropes. I also had 3 large blow up pools filled with soapy water and the hose ready for rinsing after they washed.
*once everyone arrived we did splatter painting in the front driveway. Each child labeled 3 papers then started splattering them to their hearts content with paint. I had rocks to weigh them down.
*then we moved to the grass in the backyard for the rest of the party. We started with blindfold eating - I paired up the kids and one kid wore goggles that had black paper inside of them so they were like blindfolds. The other person sat knee to knee with the blindfolded person and the blindfolded person fed the non blindfolded person ho hos, twinkies or other such foods. Then they switched.
*After that we did a food toss. We got new pairs and one person smeared cool whip on themselves while the other person had a bowl of fruit loops. They moved a bit apart and the goal was to stick as many fruit loops on the other person as you could. After a minute we counted then switched places and did it again.
*Egg Toss with raw eggs, we made sure to really clean after this one to prevent disease.
*Next was the whip cream tag using the canisters of whip cream. We had younger kids and this didn't work as good as we hoped. Older kids could do it though - they have to be pointing down to spray so that is what made it hard.
*Next we had treasure hunt pudding - I had made pudding and put gummy things in it. Each kid had to hunt in their pudding to find all ten things in there. One kid had a different object in theirs and they won a prize.
*We decorated little cakes. I cut up sheet cakes into 4 inch squares for this. They got to put on whatever they wanted (had a variety of sprinkles, candies, etc. and lots of different frosting colors). After everyone had decorated their cakes I took a picture of each kid with their cake then we counted to 3 and on three they could start the food fight. I should have videotaped this part cause it was hilarious. They were laughing so hard.
*we took pictures of them totally messy, then they went to the pools to clean off. Some kids went home with frosting stuck behind ears still, lol. It was so much fun. AFter they were cleaned up they changed into their better clothes and we did presents and real cake to eat.
It's two years later and kids still talk about Tara's food fight party.
Last year my neighbor had a scavenger hunt for her 12 year old daughter. It was hilarious. The only rule was that the teams had to stay on opposite sides of the street. They started with one tiny item and at each subsequent house they had to trade that item for something larger. I believe they had an hour. What we all came up with was just hilarious. Everyone on the street was out by the end just to see how it ended. The item "could not be returned" so the trick was getting large items that were not wanted returned. Very little prep for a fun and time consuming activity.
I second the movie idea and would add bowling. It's not something kids do all the time any more and well, it's fun! There's also Whirlyball in Lombard. I haven't done it but have heard it's a blast.

laser tag, get a hotel room & go swimming, roller skating, sleepover, navy pier, go to a salon for manicure/pedicure & makeup......what does the birthday girl want to do?
How about asking the kid what she wants to do? Sometimes the things that seem the 'coolest' to us seem lame to the kids, and sometimes the things that seem lame to us seem to be the coolest to the kids. What does the daughter want to do?
How about a group outing to see a movie?
