Runny Nose Turned into Cough

T., A couple things. First I think you ought to get her into the doctor. My grandson who is 4 was diagnosed with pneumonia 2 weeks ago. He was on 4 different meds and is finally starting to feel better.
Secondly, Vicks on the feet is suppose to help stop coughs. It really works amazingly but not is someone has Pneumonia.

I heard that cough medicines for children under 6 is not recommended anymore. When my daughter is sick, the only thing I may give her is motrin for the fever. Her ped doesnt even want me to do tylenol anymore for some reason. You will probably have a few restless nights. When my daughter is sick like that, I sleep with her and make sure she is elevated and have a cup of water on hand for her. I have to wake her up and make her drink because for some reason she will sleep through the coughing and gaging. The humidifier also works too! Whenever she is sick, I make her she takes her vitamens and pump her with vitamen C and her sickness usually doesnt last as long or as bad as other kids Iv seen. I have been dealing with the same stuff for two weeks now. I have three kids and it is going through them one by one. I am doing the same thing you are but I also prop them up at night with pillows. If their heads are elevated it helps open their airways and keeps the snot from running down their throats. My kids also ran temperatures of 102! It's no fun! Rub vicks vapor rub on her feet and put socks on her. Her cough will stop!! I use this for my girls all the time when they cough.

could it be her ears draining from an ear infection??? sometimes coughing can be the ears??? call your pediatrician & ask...

Is she running any fever with this? My 2 year old son just last week woke up with a fever that lasted for way too long. Due to the weekend and the bad weather I could not get him to the dr. until 5 days after the fever started. He started with the fever then had a runny nose (it was clear from Saturday till Thursday, when I took him in)he also had a cough. The cough started out as a dry cough but by Wend. night it turned into a wet cough that sounded like he was coughing stuff up and choking. I got him into the dr. and found out that he has RSV. I know that there is a bunch of stuff going around right now.
Also keep an eye out for her to pull on her ears. My daughter when ever she got a cold got an ear infection. She did not run a fever she would dig at her ears and pick at them. That was how I knew when she had an ear infection she would have a sore on her ear the next morning and I would call the dr. and take her in. I was always told that when they have an ear infection they run a fever not true!!

Our dr told us that babies should not have any type of cough suppressant. Then the mucus gets caught in their airway and lungs, and then they get really bad illnesses. So, preventing the cough isn't really the answer, but the vaporizer and even breathing treatments or steroids if your dr prescribes them.

There is a whooping cough epidemic. You may have her tested for it. And, of course, RSV. The percussion is a good idea. I wish I had answers to how you could help her cough, but it should pass soon. Having her tested may be a good option, so the dr can know how best to treat her. If she has a fever with the cough, you probably need to take her in.

The mucus that was or is running out her nose is now running down her throat & making her cough. Use a humidifier & put a wedge pillow under her mattress so she doesn't choke herself a wake so much. I wouldn't use an antihistamine unless your dr. suggests it & it is an allergy that is causing the problem. Just use regular infants/children's tylenol or motrin (which ever is for her weight).
If the cough gets worse see the dr.

if they are over 1 year old, have you tried honey? it really helps the little ones coughs, especially at night!

Good Morning T., if your little one will let you try this. Get some nasal spray like saline. put a drop or two in each nostril, then use the nose sucker to draw out the mucus. This keeps it from going down their throats, causing them to cough. We did this with Zane when he was little, he always had runny nose. We did it like 2 or 3 times a day. You don't spray it just let it drip in their little nose.

Tylenol for cold and cough will help releave some of the discomfort also.

I just had my 4 year old in to see her doctor she had a cough that wouldn't go away and a runny nose. She had a sinus infection. The Doctor said if it lasts more than 10 days she has to come see him because a cold or other virus lasts no more than 10 days, so it has to be bacterial and needs an antibiotic if it goes over 10 days. No matter if it is a sinus infection or bronchitis or other infection. Good luck, hope your daughter gets better soon.

Call your dr and ask if it is ok to give her an expectorant for the cough. We use Children's Musinex(sp?) for our girls but they are a little bit older. My doctor had recommended the Robitussin products but my kids won't take them because of the taste. The Musinex really does help to loosen up all that congestion so that they can get rid of it. Call your dr to see how much you can give her. The saline suggestion is also a really good one if your dr is not ok with the cough medicine. My hubby does that for his allergies and it is amazing how much better he feels.

My son had that for a month. Sometimes he would wake himself up coughing and gagging. I finally took him to the pediatrician who suggested he take Zyrtec for kids for a week. He ended up having a sinus infection so after a week they put him on an antibiotic which has completely cleared him.

Try putting a phone book under her mattress. That way when she lays down she is propped up. That usually helps my son when he has a cough.
