Safe Hair Dye for Parent with Proximity to Child?

Is there a safe hair dye for a parent who spends a lot of time in close contact with his child?

I have looked into this, and am a little overwhelmed with the various resorcinol-free (to name one nasty chemical) brands.

This is not just about not having nasty chemicals near my son when he is in my arms, but also for my general health.

I am looking for an at-home brand, not a salon.

Thanks.

I don't get it either, Paul??? I have died my hair most of my adult life. I use garnier nutrisse also, and I have 2 wonderful, intelligent, happy, healthy kids.

Did I miss the memo on hair coloring = child endangerment???

I am confused???

You should have an Aveda salon near you. They use organic and natural products. Pretty much anything you get at home will be chemically. Unless you use kool aid. That might be fun.

If you're interested in henna or indigo, check out www.hennaforhair.com for information on using henna (reddish color) or indigo (blackish color).

You can also use things like lemon juice or chamomile to give blond(ish) highlights to your hair.

Not sure if you are looking for at-home brand, but I go to an Aveda salon because they say their color treatments are 99% pure. I have not been good about following up on the specifics, but I did poke around a little on their website. You may want to try an Aveda color salon and check out the information on their website too.

The following is from internet-based search on Aveda hair dye. Always be wary with the claims of organic, pure, natural, etc. For the record, it appears that Aveda dyes are probably _better_ than most other salons. But, they do still contain some synthetic stuff.

"Salon brands of hair dye are almost all 100% synthetic and petroleum-based. The dyes are usually the controversial oxidative dyes. Aveda uses oxidative dyes like the rest of the industry (albeit in a small percentage), because so far there are no plant formulas that can provide consistent, long- lasting dyes. Oxidative dyes make up the 1% to 3% synthetic ingredients of the Aveda formulations. Oxidative dyes have no pre-existing colors until they are combined and joined with oxidizing ingredients. Most dyes use a synthetic to do this, but Aveda did research into essential oils and plant extracts, and have found and patented a process to oxidize the dye using green tea extract. Not only is the end process less petroleum-based, but the result is more natural looking. The common base formulas for dyes are petrochemical solvents, and in this process Aveda has substituted protective and lubricating plant oils in the formula so that it is significantly less drying to the hair than the solvents normally used."

Hi Paul,

Naturtint is the safest I know of that is a permanent hair dye. I get mine from the Vitamin Shoppe. There's 4 in the Portland area. I used cheaper brands before I realized how dangerous they were and now that I am using the Naturtint, I don't get dizzy or get headaches anymore. I actually let my 14 year old daughter color my hair for me.

The color is not exact on the box because everything depends on your hair color. With no bleach to remove your color completely, it's a trial and error. I use a very light blond color and my hair comes out to a reddish dirty blond. It's not expensive so a few hit or misses to get the right color shouldn't break the bank!

Good for you! and Yes - Henna. I've just started using this. I was reading about all those awful chemicals as well. Very scary!!!! They have lotions and soaps that are great for kids that I have used as well. Not expensive either. Below is the link : ) Really nice site:

Well there are organic hair colors that do not have the harsh chemicals that are in the standard types. I personally just went to a salon that uses organic hair color - and could NOT believe the difference. No smell at all, my hair previously was dry like straw, after this, it was silky soft and shiny. Just can't believe it. It was not expensive either for salon color (I think you could find a similar product at Whole Foods)....but if you want to check out the haircolor I did, here is a link (then you can use salon locator to find one near you)

On that site there is also a little video (on right side) you can watch about it
