Sahm's - Where Do You Put Toddler When You Need Shower?

Hey Mama's -

When I had my now 8 year old i worked out of the home so i was up, showered and out the door before him or my hubby were up for the day for his job. Now that I work out my home and now with a 14 month old I am finding new challenges. When my toddler was an infant it was easy to put him in the boucy seat or saucer right by the bathroom door. But now he is too big for either of those options, so now 90% of the time I just get up with my hubby and showers when he leaves for work so before my son is up. However I have come down with a cold and sleeping as much as possible so I have been getting up with my son. When it comes to shower time I'm at a lose to where to put him. His room and close the door? He has lots of toys on the floor to play with it's childproofed? In the crib with some toys?
What do other SAHM or WAHM do?
Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

WOW, what an overwhelming number of great responses I received - thank you! Even though the exersaucer is a little small I have been putting him in that for my quick showers. It's right outside the bathroom door - which I keep open anyway. That way I can talk to him the entire time and peek my head out if needed. I will probably move to the crib once the saucer is just out of the question, but I did a "mock" playtime with him in his room (I was there but the door was closed) and he walked over the closed door and screamed the whole time. Either way - usually I am up before he is - but it's good to have options just in case my little stinker gets up before I do. Thanks again!!

I'm like you and try to shower when the hubs is home. Or, if he's out the door before I get to it, I wait until the little one is napping and bring the monitor in with me. But when that isn't an option I've put her in the highchair (with something to entertain her) in the bathroom with me while I shower. I think another option that would work for me is to put her in her crib and use the monitor. I hope you feel better soon!

I was pretty relaxed. I have twins and when they were that age I would set them up with some toys in the hallway and leave the bathroom door open while I showered. If they got out of earshot I would poke my head out and call them back. The house was pretty much baby proofed.

I have a drawer in the bathroom with toys JUST FOR THE BATHROOM. So, the kids got to play with those when they were too little to be around the house on their own. That way I could peek out the shower any time. (We actually have a clear liner so I'd just toss the "decorative curtain" up so I could see the child the whole time.

At 14mos, we always just brought some toys into the bathroom with us and let him play on the floor or in the tub (empty) while we get ready (we both work, but both kids are up when we are in the morning).
Now that DS is 2.5, we just gate the upstairs floor where all of our bedrooms are, and he can go wherever he wants there. Everything is safe for him. Mostly, he likes to sit in our bed and watch cartoons while we get ready, or I have some jumbo blocks just dumped out in our tub, and he'll play with them.
We also have a 5mo, so we've brought a bouncy AND an exersaucer in our room, too. We just move her around as she demands. :)

I always get up before my toddler and shower, but once in awhile if I sleep in and she's up, then I just bring her in the bathroom with me & shut the door. She has a net full of bath tub guys, and she'll just play with them on the floor while I take a quick shower. She is 3 1/2 though. At your son's age, I had a bouncy chair thing I'd bring in the bathroom and she'd play in that until I was done. Hope that helps!

My 2 1/2 year old showers with me, although soon we will have to stop that, as hes getting to a curious age...haha! When he was younger though, I would just sit him on the bathroom floor with some toys while I took a quick shower, and I would just poke my head out of the curtain and play peek a boo with him that way. He was entertained and I was able to keep an eye on him to make sure he wasnt playing with toilet water.. haha.
Good luck!

I know a woman who put her kids in their room playing with an older child and they fell out of their window that was locked at the time. One of them got hurt bad and it had to be reported. i felt so bad for her as I had always tried to find new ways to keep my child entertained. Keeping your child in the bathroom is probably the best idea so u can peek in on him/her and make sure everything is ok. Some people said to give him food while you're in the shower and him in another room. I don't feel that is a safe thing to do. he could choke.

I'm not a SAHM but I would suggest waiting till the hubby gets home from work and shower then. I wouldn't risk putting him somewhere, even in his room closing the door cause you never know what could happen. They always find something to get into to. Or when you start feeling better you can wake up with your hubby in the morning and shower before like you used to.

At 14 months is your toddler still giving you one or two naps? I work through lunch and then when my toddler goes down, I shower then. As a WAHM (one day a week) this seems to be my only option. To make sure I get my 8-hours in, I usually get up early anyway to get things started and then work a bit later after bedtime. This is one of the luxuries of WAH.

I used to either put my girls in their crib to play and bring the monitor with me, wait until my hubby was home, or hop in the shower after they went to bed. When I would visit my father out of state I would bring them in the bathroom with me along with some toys and let them play on the floor or in a walker.

If you do bring him into the bathroom make sure it is baby proof. Last thing you want is him getting into the toilet while you have shampoo in your hair.

Also, I had to learn to take a five minute shower! Not easy to do if you need to shave :o)

You already have a lot of responses, but I just have to say that I do not like the options that involve toddlers eating unsupervised...they can easily choke while you're not watching...

Also Hecateful with exersaucers and jumpers. My daughter got a toy connected to an exersaucer caught in the back of her throat. She was freaked out and unable to pull it out. I was so thankful that I had not left her alone, and am so anxious when I hear other parents saynthey use these thingsnwhen they are busy for blocks of time...

Use a pack n play or crib with a few toys...just be sure the toys aren't big enough to be used to climb out! My daughter didn't always love being in there, but it's only a few minutes...you deserve a break for a shower!

Pack-n-play for nap time and rolled around to what ever room you need it in, like the hallway for nap time and shower time. I would put it whatever room I was going to be in and then roll it to a different room if I needed it in there, like when I was making a garment for the county fair competition.

I also sometimes left it where it was if the little one was asleep and used the baby monitors. I could carry it in the bathroom and hear if he woke up then I could hurry and get done. Otherwise I could really enjoy the shower and the quiet time alone for a few minutes..

I take my 11-month-old in the bathroom with me, make sure the toilet seat is locked, and put a few toys on the floor. You could also move the high chair into the bathroom (or doorway if it doesn't fit) and let him eat breakfast (finger foods) while you shower. I have done this too. Of course you will want to peak out at him often to make sure he is not choking and he might make a bit of a mess, but so far, it has worked for me.

I wait until they take their nap and take my shower or I take them in with me. I would never get showered if I did it any other way. As my older 2 are 10 & 7 now I can let them stay out and do schoolwork or whatever while I shower and I either take my 20month old in or wait until her nap.
I have one of those bath sponges and put that on the shower floor so they don't slip. I will sometimes give them bath crayons to color on the walls and doors to keep them entertained while I clean myself. I get them clean as well to save time.

Oh my I can't remember the last time I had a shower by myself. Even if my hubby is home I can't take a long shower because they have a fit if I am out of their sight for more than a minute. So I am usually holding one while trying to wash the other one and myself at the same time. I know this won't last forever so I try to enjoy being with my little ones as much as possible. Even though it is terribly draining some days.

Mine goes in the pack-n-play. I've been doing this since she could sit up on her own so she is pretty used to it. Even now over the age of 2 she sits in the p-n-p while I shower then I take her out when I'm done so she can run around while I finish getting dressed. She's also not a climber and is still under the max weight for the p-n-p. Not sure what I'm going to do once she gets bigger.

With my first, I would just put her in there with me, and we would both get clean together. Sometimes I shower at night so I don't have to mess with worrying about them in the morning while I shower. Sometimes I wait till their nap time, I take advantage of the morning time to do housecleaning and work up a good sweat on our treadmill, and then shower after lunch while they are sleeping. Other days I just NEED a shower, so I make sure the baby gates/doors to rooms I don't want them in, are closed and let them play in the upstairs while i shower with the bathroom door open, or I put on a DVD they love and that keeps them distracted while I shower and then make everyone's breakfast. Most of our whole house is baby proofed, and the rooms that aren't are able to be closed off. Baby Proof the bathroom, put some great toys on the floor and let him play in there?

Good Luck, you just have to do trial and error and see what works for you!

Ok, so your ? didn't show up in my area, so I'm just now seeing this. Our daughter is 2 and I bring her stroller into the bathroom, put on the brake, strap her in and let her watch a DVD on the portable DVD player. The way our home is I would not feel comfortable with her being in her room on her own even if I could hear her. She's gotten into too many things in the past when I thought she (and the things) were safe! That worked for both kids, though when our son was that age we didn't have the portable DVD player so we just brought toys or a snack for him to use in the stroller. Good luck!

I always take my youngest (13 months) in the bathroom with me if he is awake. I usually strap him in the infant-to-toddler rocker. Sure it's cramped in there, but better safe than sorry. And sometimes, it's just a quick shower because he's so mad about being confined. Otherwise, if I don't have anything planned for the day, I wait until he naps. And that's usually only 3 to 4 hours after he wakes. My 3.5 year old gets plunked in front of the TV with a favorite show or movie.

Sorry, I'm late to answer this, but I usually bathe at night after the kids go to sleep and/or when my husband is home to keep an eye on everybody. I rarely shower when I'm alone with the kids during the day, but if I had to, I would strap my toddler into her high chair and turn on a cartoon show. We have videos on hand and we record the shows we like for her. I think TV was made for helping moms get things done and is perfect when used sparingly.

You get up before your kid??? You're awesome! Haha... I sleep until the last possible second! My daughter is two and a half now, but when she was that age I put her rocking chair in the bathroom with a tub of books. She "read" while I showered. Now she likes to sit on her little potty chair with the lid closed and "read" or color on a clipboard. She's a total mama's girl... Having her in her room alone didn't work for us either. :) I was lucky, though... She sat still pretty easily for 10 mins without getting into anything. I'm not sure how your toddler is in that respect. Good luck!

I'm also dealing with that now! I would not let the child in their room by themsevles. However in the crib with toys is good, in high chair, in booster seat or umbrella stroller in the bathroom. Or just wait until the child naps.
