Scalp Issues

My 21 month old girl has had nasty flaky scales on her scalp (except, they're kind of oily, so they don't actually flake off on their own) since she was a few months old. Keeping her hair and scalp clean doesn't help. I had thought that it was cradle cap when she was a baby and was treating it as such, but was never able to get rid of all of it and then it just comes back. She's always had a full head of hair to cover it and doesn't really complain about it, so it's not something I think about on a daily basis. But I looked up cradle cap online again about a month ago, and that's supposed to go away by the time they turn 1. Every now and then, I'll pick at a scale or two, but when they come off, they come with hair (not just one or 2 pieces, but 6 or 8 or so depending on the size of the scale) So I try not to pick at it too much. Has anyone else dealt with this before and have any ideas on what it might be or what to do? I can't really afford to take her to the doctor to get it checked out unless I know it's something that will be worth the visit, so it may be another 3 months before I ask a professional.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My husband used Head and Shoulders, so I stole his and used it on the baby a couple of times and along with lots of brushing, it's almost gone already. Thanks for all the advice, everyone.

Rub olive oil into her scalp. I know that it sounds crazy, but if you do this it will gradually get rid of the cradle cap. I have three daughters and did daycare for 3 1/2 years this worked on all of my kids and the daycare kids.

My son had a flaking scalp when he was born and my doctor gave it a name, but it was not cradle cap. He told me to use dandruff shampoo. I did this for awhile, about a month and it did disappear. He said it is something babies can get as a infant and may likely get it at puberty again. I just had to be real carefull with the shampoo because it is not tearless. I just used pert plus for dandruff that they have at walmart. I hope this helps!!

Don't worry yet. Sometimes cradle cap doesn't go away until they're around 2 or 2 1/2, my son's didn't. Don't pick at it, just keep it clean and let the brush do the "picking". I would call a doctor if it is still all over in 2 or 3 months. Hope this helps.

J. B.,

I understand your financial dilemma, but what message are you sending to your daughter about taking care of herself when she has a problem? I'm concerned that she is learning from a young age to only take care of herself when money allows.

It may be nothing serious, but if it is serious, waiting another 3 months to seek professional help could make the situation worst. It is hard to say what the problem could be as I cannot actually "see" your daughter's scalp. For this reason, you should seek professional help. Check with your community about "Free" clinics to help the costs involved with seeking professional advice in the event you are unable to afford a doctor at this time.

Good luck to you,

Anngie

I'm sure if you take her to a clinic they will see her, they cannot deny her treament, If insurance is a problem try medacaid... My daughter had some flakeyness at a very youn age (infant) and i took a baby very soft bristle brush and every night rubbed her head with a small amount of baby oil and brushed through it for about 10 minutes or as long as she would let me, I myself just went through a battle of losing alot of hair, but it was stress related it has grown out now, I know she's not stressed...
I hope I could have been of some help.

My son had what you described and it really was cradle cap. I used the "Naturals" cradle cap lotion found at any drug store and a fine tooth comb. Repeat every day until it goes away. It only took 3 days for it to disappear.

My youngest has just turned 4 yrs. old and she has had this since birth (on and off). I have asked her doctors several times and they say it IS cradle cap and that they can have it at any age. I recently tried using dandruff shampoo on the spot (per the advise of my nurse friend)and it seems to have worked. I have been using a fine toothed comb to scrape the spot. I find this works best when her head is wet and soapy. The combination of the two seems to be working so far. What your daughter has really sounds like cradle cap or psoriasis (which I think is very similar). In either case dandruff shampoo should work. I bought Neutrogena T/Gel and have only had to use it twice on the spot. It should be safe to use on a baby, but you can always call your Doctor's office to be sure.

Sounds like possibly ecsema or psoriasis (forgive the spelling) She may be allergic to her shampoo or conditioner. I would try "Renew Intensive skin therapy" lotion or "Natural's" brand shampoo. Both of these are for dry skin, ecsema or psoriasis.....just a thought...

Hi J.. I appreciate your frustration - especially with a full head of hair. It sounds a little to me like ringworm of the scalp - tinea capitis. This is very often confused with cradle cap, but since her hair comes out with it, I would do some google searching in this area. From there you can search for natural at-home cure that you are comfortable trying until you get to see your pediatrician.

One issue that hasn't been brought up is this:
My daughter had 2-3 spots on her head - dime size - and they were like that. I thought it was ringworm. I described it to the nurse over the phone and she said they were mosquito bites. And that's how they 'react' on a scalp.

If your daughter is constantly having this, it wouldn't be this. But wanted to throw that out there.

If you don't want to spend the money on a dr yet, try calling ask-a-nurse or searching WebMD...something like that.

It may be completely different, but i was noticing that problem with my son when Daddy would wash his hair. I pointed out to my DH that he either wasn't scratching or rinsing enough when washing his hair. After that the problem went away.

Good luck :)

Have you tried using a shampoo like Selsun Blue? My daughters had the same problem when they were younger...the scales were kind of yellow. I used the shampoo and would leave it on for a few minutes before I rinsed it out. I'd use it every other day until resolved, but it shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks I think. Hope this helps!

It sounds like your daughter has psoriasis. There are two types, the oily type and the dry type. I know because I've had it since I was in high school and I'm almost 25 now. A doctor should be able to give you a lotion type medication that can be applied to the scalp and usually clears it up. Unfortunately, I don't believe there is anything you can do to prevent it from coming back. I've had it for several years now and I've tried every shampoo, etc. to keep it gone. It seems to be worse in the winter and better in the summer. I have the scales and when I pick at them, I pull out large amounts of hair with it. I would recommend seeing a doctor or dermatologist to get something for it.

Good Luck!

I don't know if this is the same thing that both of my girls seem to have, but it sounds like it might be. Both of my girls have a mild case of exczema, and their heads are scabby and scaly. They are almost 2 and 4 and my 2 has very little hair, but my 4 yo has lots. The only thing that I have found that takes care of the problem, and only if I am diligent about doing this several times a week when bathing them.

I use a really soft brush (it is the on plastic bristled one that I got in the hospital, sort of looks like a dog brush) and I actually use it to 'scrape' the scales from their scalps.

I know it sounds gross, and painful, but the girls, other then a little whining, don't mind it. Ever since I have been doing this, it has almost completely cleared up. if you want to contact me, ____@____.com is my email, it is the best way.

hope this helps!

Hi J. -
It sounds like it might be a form of dermatitus (like exzema or scoriosis). I personally had this problem in college, where my hair would come out in clumps when I would pull off the "scales". I was told by a physician to use the medicated Selsun Blue shampoo a couple of times a day, but I don't know if you would want to use this on a child (since it is medicated) - but I think you would be okay using the Head & Shoulders as mentioned in one of the other posts. Good Luck!

My daughter had this same problem. She was born with a head a hair, and got the flakes. I was never able to get rid of it completely without picking at it. It is cradle cap, and they can get it at any age (I had it when I was a teenager, and didn't know). It is normal for the hair to come out with it. Babies loose hair on a daily basis just like the rest of us. I actually had to pick most of it out (some recommend baby oil and then rubbing a toothbrush or comb on it to loosen it). From there, every bath time, I would wash her hair, gently using my fingernails to scrub her scalp. After her bath, I would spray in a leave-in conditioner. Hope this helps.

J.,

I have a similar problem with my child who is almost 2. I use baby oil about 2 times per month and it helps a lot. It is kind of messy and takes a little time, but it works. First, you put a small amount of baby oil in your hand and rub through the hair to the scalp, then let it sit in there for about 10 minutes. You can then take a soft brissle brush and gently brbush the flakes from the scalp. There will most likely be new hair growth under the flakes. My child finds this soothing. When you have removed the flakes you may need to wash the childs hair a couple of times with baby shampoo to remove the oil. The hair will be a little oily for a day or two. I hope this works for you.

Thanks! J.

My older son had this.. OH MY GOSH!!! It was Nasty and hard to get rid of.. Sadly.. ( are you sitting ) He is 14 now.. and STILL gets it at times.. It comes and goes....

I did the baby oil ( thinking it was CC )

WE had a little fine tooth comb and tried to get it out.. and Yes.. The hair came with it...

I took him to the dr... Just regular dr.. she said It was CC.. But It was NOT... Later I took him to a dermitologist.. I was given some sampoo to him.. and a solution and cream to put on it....

It helped IF you use it all the time as you should.. It just got soooo Old ya know.... It would get better.. we would stop... then it would start up again.. worse!!!! He will get HUGE patches at times.. they now flack off in dime size parts... Like Flakes!!

Anyway.... Do call a dermetologist.... Infact.. My son now (the little guy had some of the oily stuff.. but it did go away for now.. IF it shows up.. I willll be going in to see a dermetoligist!!!! )

Also you can try some exema shampoo.. It will not get rid of it... bit it can help to dry it out a bit.....

Major yeck and I am so sorry!!! I know how you feel!!!!

Hi J.,

Believe it or not, it is normal for a baby to lose it's hair. Usually it is not all of it. As far as the flakes, What will ,make a huge difference, go to walmart or a pharmacy, purchase a bottle or tube of Vitamin E oil. after giving your baby a bath, drop some of it on your finger tips and rub it on to the baby's scalp. Let the baby go to bed with it on it's scalp. Not only will it help with the scales, but it will strengthen the hair. If you perfer lotions more, you can buy vitamin E lotions too. Do this about 2-3 times a week. I have a website also of "Home Remedies". Let me know if you would like me to forward it to you. Take care, K..

Hi J. - GO TO THE DOCTOR! I say this only because my son had the same thing and it was ringworm. It was awhile ago, but I think he had to do treatment for 30 days. The dr. said it's really hard to get out of the scalp and it is contagious. Good luck, I remember the frustration with this and I H. it turns out well for you.

My son had the same problem for about two years. I could pick at it and clumps of hair would come with the "skin." I switched the shampoo I was using to the new Johnson's Natural line of shampoo and it went away without any torture or harsh chemicals. He also had very full hair. It was a simple, not messy, not harsh fix for my son. I hope this helps.

I highly recommend Arbonne's shampoo w/Tea Tree oil and hair and scalp revitalizer. It is excellent for the hair and scalp and very pleasant, unlike putting olive oil and baby oil in your hair. Baby oil typically not going to penetrate into the pores of the skin because the mineral oil is too big to go into the pores and it blocks moisture from getting into the skin. This product is so worth it! If you want to get 35% off, just give me a call and I can get some for you.

What you describe sounds like the same problem my two year old had. For her she did outgrow it around 1 year but I also had talked to her pediatrician about it. He said that it wasn't uncomfortable for her or anything but that I could use the Neutrogena T-Gel shampoo to help. I did use this and it seemed to help a little and who knows, maybe it was because of that use that it finally went away. I am unsure because I used it for several months so I don't know if it was the shampoo or just her outgrowing the issue. My daughter's hair would also come out with the scales but I guess with her being so young I just figured it was just her fine baby hair so it wasn't a big deal for it to come out. I never was able to notice that her hair was thinning or anything. If anything it was getting thicker as most babies will.
