I got a phone call today from my dr telling me that my pap test was not normal. The nurse said the cells were abnormal, that he wanted me to come in for a coloscopy and biopsy. I have never had this happen before and i am scared. Has anyone had this happen to them or know anything about this??

So What Happened?

well i went for the coloscopy. I was quite nervous. The procedure was quite uncomfortable. I have to wait 2-3 weeks for the results of the test. I want to thank all of you who gave me advice, it really made me feel better about the whole thing. Thanks again.

Hi A.-
I see you're bombarded with responses - which is good! All of us have had the same thing, and it almost always isn't a big deal. You'll be fine.

What's funny is... abnormal paps are so normal that getting a normal pap is what they should call abnormal! It panics us all, and usually for nothing. Good Luck, I'm sending my thoughts your way. K.

After my first daughter was born i went through the same procedures. If the coloscopy cames back abnormal too, they will have you do a leep test also. You most likely have low grade lesions, which they will tell you is okay. When this happened to me they had me go get a pap every six months. I went therough the same thing and was scared beause no one else i knew had these problems, but now is becoming more normal. But now i know quite a few people that this has happened too. After i had my second daughter everything went back to normal for me and have had good paps ever since.

I've had this happen twice. Had to do the biopsy, and they came back okay. Just had to do the exam every six months for a little while just as a precaution. They tell me that most of the time its usually okay, but they want to make sure. I hope that you are in the same boat.

My pap came back abnormal as well. I've had a coloscopy done twice so far and it hasn't been bad. Now that I'm expecting my second child, I have to get a pap done every 3 months. So far my cells are still abnormal (I have displacia) but no problems. Don't worry about it like I did!! Coloscopies are pretty common procedures.

I have had this happen a couple of times, it never ended up being anything. Lots of things can cause abnormal results on a pap. They will check you again and probably make you come back in 6 months for another test. Just stay positive it helps. Good Luck I am sure you will be fine.

Dear A.,

Hi, I had a coloscopy and biopsy back in 1996 when I was pregnant with my second child. They scrape cells from your uterus and then cut a very tiny, tiny piece off in the area where the abnormal cells are in the uterus. On me, they performed a procedure called a "leap" where they burn the abnormal cells off. I don't know if this is something you may want to do or if your doctor recommends it, it's not painful, they give you a shot in the uterus to numb it and they burn or laser off the bad cells. They had to do it piecemeal with me because I was pregnant when I had this done.

Just wanted you to know, many many people have gone through it, and you'll be fine. Don't worry. I was very scared too and I was so happy when it was done. Just remember, to always go for a pap test. Good luck and again, don't worry you'll be fine!

Hi there...I had the same thing happen to me...having several abnormal pap tests and abnormal cells. Don't worry too much. I had a coloscopy...I was very nervous but it wasn't bad at all. They did it right in the office and took maybe 10 minutes. If your really scared just ask as many questions as you can...I know I feel better when I know as much as I can. Good luck. =)

i have had this same problem twice now once about 8 years ago when i was pregnant with my son i had a biopsy and colposcopy done and then all seemned well.. then this past year when i was pregnant with my newest they found the cells were back yet upgraded to the next level. i am not sure where you are at but chances are it was caught soon enough and the biopsy/colposcopy should take care of it. i know its a little scary at first but its not so bad after you gedt the colposcopy done remember to get regular paps.. there is always the chancie of it returning. i hope everything works out with you good luck and try not to worry ...i drove myself nuts worrying turned out to be fixable.. keep us posted!

i would just relax for right now. It*s pretty normal to have a not normal pap, is more common than you would think. Sometimes it*s nothing. They will do test on the cells to make sure there is no cancer cells, if there is they will remove them. then u will have to go every 6months, Even if there is nothing wrong they will still have you come in every six months, intill you have a normal pap for a while.SOme people just have a not normal pap once. I went through it for 4years deff was no fun, very stressful. You never sure what the result would be. I*m fine now normal paps for over 4yrs now. Good luck with everything, I hope everything goes good.

I have had the same thing. My pap results were abnormal for a couple of years. I had to have the colposcopy a couple of times and I was totally freaked out. My doctors kept a close eye on everything and eventually it cleared up on it's own. I do get nervous everytime I have a pap though, because I really don't want another colposcopy, it's quite uncomfortable. But now everything is perfectly normal, so don't get yourself all worked up, because it really could be nothing. It's very common. So relax and see what the doctors say. Take it easy.

Wow! A lot of responses here. Yes, I to am a victim of abnormal test results on a pap smear. I have had two colposcopy's done in the past year. they are nothing to be alarmed by, and usually the results are normal afterwards. I say better safe then sorry. But, don't worry about it, it is no big deal at all. Just take a motrin before the procedure and you will be fine. Mine lasted for only ten minutes, then I left and treated myself to an ice cream.

I have had MANY pap results come back abnormal...from the time I was 14 to the time I was about 22, they all used to come back abnormal and I have had 3 colposcopies done. Every time I went, it turned out that they were just abnormal cells...nothing wrong. The colposcopy/biopsy is a little painful, but if you take some motrin or tylenol before you go to the procedure, it helps a lot. Dont worry too much about it, most times it turns out to be nothing. After my first pregnancy, the abnormal cells changed or something, because since I had my daughter, all my paps have been normal. Most of these things work themselves out, or they have procedures to fix them that are very easy and very routine. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me. I used to work for an OB/GYN, so Ive actually assisted in the procedure.

Hi A.,

I had to have this done a few years ago, probably at about your age actually. It turned out to be nothing in my case. If I recall correctly, they thought that the abnormal pap came up because I had just finished my period right before the pap.

Good Luck!

I hope you've been reassured by all the responses that this is pretty common. My daughters are three and one. I, too, have had an abnormal pap smear followed by a cholposcopy and a LEEP within the last couple of months. Though the procedures were uncomfortable, it's done for now. I'll go back in six months for another pap smear. Please don't worry.
