School Dist U-46 - Good? Bad?

Our family moved to IL from TX in July of '06. We've been renting a nice apartment in Schaumburg, but now it's time to look for a house. We've found nice houses in our price range in Streamwood, a part of the U-46 School District. Being new to the area I've heard some grumblings about U-46, but I've also heard it has made some great strides for improvement in the past couple of years. Any thoughts on living in Streamwood and the schools my kids would attend? Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

There are areas in U-46 that score low, overall, and quite a few are in Streamwood. However, I'm also of the belief that 95% is the student and not the schools. A friend of ours used to work in the junior high over there as a teacher. He liked working for the district and said they are working to better test scores but test scores don't make a good district. U-46 is a HUGE district due to all of the home construction over the last few years. We are in Hanover Park but are U-46, Bartlett. There are actually homes in our area for sale but don't know the listing prices. Good luck.

I considered moving to Elgin and a friend of mine who lived there for a while and who's mother lives there has told me that it really depends which area of U46 you are in. She said there are some good schools in the district, but you have to be in the right neighborhood. I would think that the best resource for this would be a Realtor. I am not sure which schools or neighborhoods are the good ones myself, but I did want to say was just be very careful when it comes to U46. A lot of it is not good at all....but alot of the area it serves is nice and affordable. I know it is hard to find something affordable around here. We also lived in an apt in Schaumburg and both work in the area but when we bought we moved further out...to Crystal Lake. The commute really sucks, but it is a very nice community and the schools are great too. Good luck in your search!

Hi J.,
We live in Streamwood and based on my sister's experience in attending the U46 school, I would recommend you to look at private schools if you decide to live in the area. There are a lot of great private schools around Schaumburg area.

Hi J.,

We moved around that area a couple of years ago. I'm not sure what schools your kids would go to within the district, but what I gathered from my research is that alot of the test scores at certain U46 schools were lower because there's alot of students there that don't have english as the primary language. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, but what I mean is that overall that there was difficulty with some language barrier, which lowered the test scores of some schools specifically in Streamwood and Elgin. And thus, affects the districts performance overall.

I've also heard that some of the administration is difficult, but luckily I have a couple more years before I have to deal with that!!

There is a website called greatschools (not sure if it's .net or .com) where you can research the individual schools as well.

As a former teacher in Evanston and a current substitute teacher in u46, i've seen mostly good things throughout the district. I also live in bartlett, so my children will go to u46 a s well. Evanston was a very 'good' district when i was there, and really, it is not much different than u46. I can't say that it is the best out there, but i firmly believe that an involved parent usually has a child who is successful.
One grumbling is that there are occasionally mixed age classrooms (ex. 4th/5th grade split). BUT, a good teacher will make it a successful split classroom. Also, other 'good' school districts occasionally have split classrooms as well, so it's not unusual.
i agree w another post that recommended researching the specific school.
hope this helps a bit!

I am a teacher in U-46. I think the district is good. It always depends on the teachers you have. Our district is always on the cutting edge and tring to improve ourselves. If you would like to know more about your school. simply go to our district website and look at the school you would attend. See if they have meet on the standard test and what ever else you want to know. If you would like some help let me know.

Part of our decision to move to Bartlett was the U-46 district -- from the Bartlett perspective. I agree about doing research on certain schools and no matter where you buy, before you do, call the school and make sure your house is in "district." Often times realtors will tell you the house will be in district for a certain school but they base it off what the homeowner states, which isn't always accurate.

We looked at maps from the school districts with test scores for elementary, jr. high and high schools against the houses we were considering to make sure we were looking in an area that we wanted to end up and the lines between communities are very thin. Just be aware and you'll end up in a good spot.

I am not sure about this district but would absolutely look at the Illinois Board of Ed website and see how their schools rank and where they are (e.g., not only test scores but it has a variety of things to look at what makes up a good school and what is important to you). Also, talk to people like you are and Realtor to find out information where you could pinpoint where you would be interested. I did a lot of work on this and based my home search with this and have been very happy with it! Good luck.

J.,

RUN! Do not move to a house where U46 is the district. I currently live in the district and am appalled by the school system. When the housing market gets better -- we are out of here!
