School Supplies Question PISD

From a teacher's perspective, yes, this is very common. I always started the first day by collecting everyone's supplies and putting them away. Believe it or not, this is the best way to make sure that supplies are not lost or wasted and that they will make it to the end of the year. If you want to buy some personal items, you can contact the teacher ahead of time and ask which items she doesn't collect. Or, like someone else posted, make it a big deal to pick out backpacks/lunchboxes/clothes.

Yes, PISD combines the supplies in the classroom and pulls them out as needed. I always bought the prepackaged deal from the PTA and by the time shcool started they were already done and put away.

Middle school is a little different. My daughter is heading to 8th grade this year. I bought supplies per the list for 6th grade and the first week of school, she came home with detailed lists from each class. Needless to say, I still have some 6th grade stuff leftover.

For 7th grade, I bought the necessities for the first week fo school and then when I got my lists from the teachers, I bought what we needed. I plan to do the same this year as well. She goes through a lot of binders.

Welcome To Shepard, my son goes there, and yes all the stuff gets combined. I am not sure how they work out supplies brought in as about half the school buys the prepacks sold by pta. It makes it easier and less time consuming for the teachers plus they it allows them to set up a system for keep stuff straight on thier desk, so they know which folders belong where, more inportant as they get older and have more than one folder being used.

What I have done so my son still can get some use of personalized supplies is we keep them at home for homework and projects he needs to work on.

I know it is a pain but teaches have less and less resources and put so much of their own money into extra supplies. There are always a few kids that show up with nothing, and between parents that sned extra and techer pitching in, we help ensure that all the kids are set up with uniform supplies.

yes-- Allen is doing this too-- have them pick out a few extra special supplies (characters etc..)to keep at home and use for homework and paper they want to keep.
make a BIG deal out of their lunch box/backpack and maybe a few new outfits for school....
I always try and buy craft supplies and school stuff for home around this time of the year b/c the prices are so-- great!

We moved here from Boston. Back there, teacher asked us to name each and every supply - even paper towel etc (she will tell the class who gave it to them and say thanks to that child when they start using it in class). So your child will use the stuff you bought (sometimes color of notebook/folder is so important to them).

After moving here I bought pre-packaged stuff for first year then I spent a lot of time, energy and money in buying the things my children wanted which they did not end up using.

It's a lesson learned.
