I'm 6 months pregnant with 2nd baby and having classic sciatic nerve pain. If you have had this problem during your pregnancy could you please share what helped you? I would also appreciate any recommendations in the SE area- chiropractors etc. that are comfortable with pregnancy. Thank you so much- I can hardly walk and taking it easy with a 2 year old has been difficult so it's just getting worse!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your posts. I am seeing Dr. Kingston on Hawthorne and am very happy with my progress. Aside from daily (!) visits with Dr. Kingston I am following his recommendations: Ice 4 times a day, Lying in a neutral back as well as on my side with pillow between my legs, restricting my behavior with my toddler. I was so lucky to have several friends and family, as well as my husband, step in and help with my son and the house. I am feeling much better but am going to take it slow- I don't want to be back where it was. Thanks guys!
On a side note,I wanted to mention that the acupuncturist I spoke with did not feel comfortable treating the sciatic pressure points because these are the same ones that can induce labor.

Hi D.,

I did not see a chiropractor like others on the post have. My physical therapist recommended floor exercises where you get down on all fours and curve the back, then you release it and stretch your neck forward. Repeat this several times. It's described as a cat stretch. It felt great and in fact I did it several times a day. I also did massage therapy but the exercise I described was the most helpful. Do wear a pregnancy belt when you're up doing chores or if you're able to take walks. I know how painful it can be. best wishes.

No advice on the sciatic pain, but can recommend a chiropractor on the west side that has a great table for when you're pregnant. She saw me throughout both of my pregnancies - I love the table, it gives way just when and where you need it.

The chiropractor is Dr. Laura Ziemer and they are kid friendly, also. Located on SW Garden Home, just east of Oleson/Greenburg Rd. You can reach them at ###-###-####. Keep them in mind if you don't find one you like on the east side.

I am so so sorry for the pain you are having! I think what helps the most is a good PT or chiropractor. I would switch till you find the right fit. Also, exercise and walking. When I sat or at night my pain was the worst. I also got relief from a good massage therapist. I've also heard that acupuncture is a good alternative. I have heard from other that for most people the pain goes away as soon as you have the baby. It was not the case for me because my disks.

During my first pregnancy I had low back and sciatic pain. It was the worst pain I had ever been in. After the birth it became even worse from an episode of lifting the infant car seat carrier. During the pregnancy I was going to PT with not great results along with massage which brought relief. After the birth I tried to get my primary care to send me to a specialist when the PT was not working for me, and he continued to recommend the same PT. I don't think that therapist worked for my situation. Thankfully, for PPO's I went above him and contacted a specialist myself. I was limping at this point. I think I had a PT that just wasn't working for me too.

I saw a Physiatrist at a spine center (we lived out of state at the time). I had an MRI done, had two herniated disks L4-5, one severely herniated, and during six months had two cortisone injections and physical therapy.

I still get flair ups, but with exercise and proper body mechanics I keep on top of it. I had started doing pilates with a trainer which has been great for my back as I am also pregnant with number two and due in March. My first is 20 months.

I'm not sure the age of your babes, but I was still able to breast feed during the cortisone injections. I had to pump and dump for 24 hours, and my husband did all the feedings with a bottle. It didn't change my supply as I BF till 18 months.

I hope this helps, and keep in mind that the whole process takes time to see results. I really feel for you! Let me know if you have any other ?

For me, I would sleep on my side with a King size pillow next to me. (One on each side) When I went from one side to the other I would put it between my legs and drape my arm over it. With having it into my chest, it kept me from feeling like my ribcage was being crushed. I did this with both of our kids and still do it today. My husband of 11yrs shares the middle pillow with me and has one on the other side too. It does make our King size bed crowded, but we are both comfortable.

Talk with a Naturopathic doctor. There are some mild exercises you can do for this. Those helped me too.

Best wishes with your new baby and best of luck finding comfort.

I've seen Dr. Kingston on Hawthorne Blvd at Mt. Tabor Chiropractic Center for over 10 years and throughout 2 pregnancies. I highly recommend him. He's a nurturing and alternative sort of male doctor. I did not have sciatica, but he did treat me for some strong low back pain. He's also great with kids, makes them laugh!

Good luck!

I had sciatic nerve pain with my pregnancy. I saw a massage therapist who specialized in pregnant and postpartum moms. To my shock, it only took ONE massage for the pain to leave. It never came back.

I don't have her name and number, but here are some people I have heard are very good:

Amy Watson (Chiropractic care more than massage, but friends rave about her) - www.mamababychiro.com

Here's another link I found: http://www.c1pdx.com/Expecting_Mothers.html

Massage and/or chiropractic care can do miracles for this type of pain.

Good luck!! Only a few more months to go : )

I've had recurrent problems with sciatica, among other things. Even though I've moved across town, I still make the drive to see Dr. Khalsa (chiropractor)on 50th & Hawthorne at the Khalsa Pain Releif Clinic. ###-###-####. I've referred several friends to him, and they've all loved him! I've tried other chiropractors closer to home, but always end up going back to Dr. Khalsa. My whole family loves him. I even took my 2.5 year old to see him last week for his first adjustment! Tell him L. sent you.
