I have had my molar's sealed since I was very young.

I think I have had one or two sealants fall out and replaced. I am happy to say I have never had a cavity and I am 34 years old.

I have sealants on my son. I highly recommend it. Just remember to still floss in between, it does not cover that area.

There is no reason NOT to do it. We did it early on with our now 15 yr old and she has had no problems at all. She has perfect teeth.

I don't know about you but our insurance covered it. I think it was about $50/tooth. Does not hurt, they just paint it on.

I see you chose to keep the appt, good mom...!

Make sure the sealant is BPA free.

I can add that my mother had the sealants put on my molars when I was a child. I am now in my 30's and have never had a cavity or issues of any type. I would recommend you do it, it has worked for me.

I always had horrible teeth growing up...lots of molar cavities. So I was determined to do the best for my kids, no matter what. My kids are: 17, 11, & 9. They've been getting check-ups every six months & getting sealants as early as their dentist recommended. They've NEVER had cavities. And this is sans flouride treatments (I believe flouride is toxic).

Totally for it! My daughters are 11 and 5 and so far no cavitites. I even pay for it myself since insurance won't cover it.

do it.
It's an easy process only takes a few minutes to do and an up side other than the sealant they can't eat hard or really sticky candy. Gum is ok but taffy is not.

I am glad to hear everyone's response because like you I have to get them done on my 4yr old son and when the dentist mentioned it, I was already ready to get it done, because mentally I will feel comfortable with not having any more risk of cavities for the few good teeth he has left, LOL.

My parents did this with my sister and I once we hit elementary school and it must have helped because I love my teeth and so does my sister. I will do the same for my kids because even though they brush their teeth it is not always the best effort given. I look at it as insurance to prevent cavaties.

Absolutely do it! My kids had it done, and nobody has had ANY bite surface cavities, whereas I had all of my molars filled as a kid. My daughter in her 30's has not had any fillings as far as I know. My 22 year old son has had 2 fillings NOT on biting surface, and the 21 year old has never had any problem. We had the sealers done at about that age and redone as needed. It takes a minute, causes no discomfort at all, and is not expensive, especially as compared to the cost of a filling.

I echo everyone else's comments. But also, if your child is an ice eater, (both of mine were, even though I "knew" it was bad) it will cause the sealant to come off and will have to be redone if you want to have any effect. So keep an eye out for that. It didn't even occur to me and my son went back for his next check-up and the dentist said... "didn't we seal those? there's not sealant there. Do you eat ice?" Yep. He went ahead and redid them and admonished my son : No eating ice.

So far so good. He is 12 and no cavities. Same for daughter. No cavities.

DO IT! I had my teeth sealed all through childhood and adolescence and had no cavities. As soon as I became an adult and insurance no longer covered sealants, I started getting cavities because my teeth have deep grooves in them. After having 8 cavities filled in 2 years, I spent the money and had my teeth sealed again and will continue to do so. I like my teeth and chewing, so it's worth it. :-)

It was suggested for my 7 year old as well so I asked three of the soccer Moms who are dental hygienests and they all recommend it. The molars are permanent and the sealant will protect them for a lifetime. He has an appointment in Sept. to do this.

I recommend doing it. I did. At this age they are going to be learning to be self-starters and learning to brush their teeth without any help from mom or dad. The sealant is an insurance policy to offset the learning curve if you ask me. There's really no reason to NOT do it.
