hi there.
i've finally gotten up the nerve to go to my local yarn store and get some big needles and big bulky yarn to learn with. these gals are GREAT folks and happy to give pointers, but i need far more than i can ask of them ... last night i knitted myself into a tight little corner and kept picking up stitches. i'd started w/20 ... and now i'm at 24 and can't figure it out ... and i have a clear problem when i get to then end of a row and need to switch ... once i'm in the middle, i'm a pretty knitting fool and feeling great, then i get to the end and blech.

which is fine -- this is WAY MORE THAN I KNEW 48 hours ago, so it's all a plus, but i need some one-on-one time, maybe just one hour, who knows? the yarn store classes are on Weds & Sat and i work those times ...

is anyone a teacher or would be willing to help (i'd even pay you) or know of more classes, groups, etc.?

thanks.

What can I do next?

Stitch n Bitch is fascinating and awesome...if you notice an extra stitch...add it with another one to make it go away.

Hi M., to really answer your request for a teacher, we need to know where you live. With a 4-year-old and another on the way, you don't have a lot of time to drive around. I'm a bit surprised that there is any yarn shop in this area that would sell bulky yarn to someone just learning. I always advise my friends to start with something really simple using basic 4-ply worsted yarn so you can see what you are doing. And to not offer knitting lessons through the store is weird! There is a guild in Dallas http://www.dallashandknittersguild.com/ that I have heard wonderful things about, and most knitters are ready to assist a newby. Also, some of the members have there own smaller groups. There is also a yarn shop on the southwest corner of Coit and Campbell in far north Dallas that did a fantastic job teaching my daughter to knit -- I opted not to try to teach her because we have a wonderful relationship and I wanted to keep it that way.

I'm not sure where you live, but they have a knit night at Passion Knit in Sneider Plaza in University Park. It's free, a bunch of people just sit around/drink wine/knot, and you can ask advice. They also have a class you can take that is not expensive at all and you get one-on-one attention. I took the class and have done the knit night (I think it is on Thursdays?).

YES! I met Kristie Miller at a gift show. She makes and sells beautiful things and teaches, too. She will do group classes or individual ones, and she is a lovely person. Kristie has been knitting since she was 9 years old.
Go to her website - www.whatknots.net - to get her contact info. She is in Plano, but can come to you.
Good luck and have fun!

I'm not an expert knitter, but I think I may have an idea how you're picking up stitches. Do they almost look like two loops crossing over on themselves? If that's the case, you are likely picking up a loop of yarn from the row below the one you are knitting. When you knit up to that point, you can figure out which loop is from the row below and just slide it off your needle, keeping the correct stitch and continuing from there.

It sounds complicated, but if this is the problem, it's fairly easy to fix. Which yarn store have you visited?

Hi M.,

I am an avid knitter and crocheter...been for years. It's a hobby my husband finds a bit irritating when he has to sort the boxes of yarn I have stacked up out there. I am a work-from-home Mom with 2, 5, and 7 year olds, and I'd love to help. I live in Sachse if you're interested.
Congratulations on your expected little one!
Good luck,
A. H

Been there done that. LOL. Some yarns seem to do that with me. Basically, when you did your knit or purl, you didn't get the one stitch completely off your left needle or you picked it up with your right by accident. Stitch and Bitch is a good basic knitting book you might check out. I think it covers this error. Also www.knitty.com is good for patterns and tutorials.

The Woolie Ewe in Plano has classes. Also, I've noticed that people come in with questions and there are some ladies that are always there who will answer them. I bet you could give them a call or go in and they'd help.
