Lots of moms enjoy doing something in the direct sale industry - those home parties. Things like Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, Lea Sophia, Sentsy Candles ... really there's something for just about any personality type. Generally, these are not scams. There is an upfront investment to buy a "starter kit" (should be around $100 for most I think) and that gets you all the materials you need to hold your first parties. Try out any product before you decide to sell it (it's much easier to sell something you already love). You don't have to be the "sales type" to do well - a person is more successful in these if she is good with people and willing to be teachable. Also look into how much they pay - you get a commission of your sales, and it varies from 15% to 50% depending on the company. Also ask about training and support; people generally do better when they have a lot of support but you don't want to pay to get it. Also, if it's not something you're really familiar with, find out if they are part of the Direct Sales Association. And the big focus should be on selling, not recruiting. You want something that will encourage you to build customers and do demonstrations, not something that wants you to sign everyone up (then who would you sell to? lol).
The benefit is you can work as much or as little as you want, and you get to pick your own hours. The drawback can be that you are paid only on commission so the income is based entirely on your self discipline and how much you are willing to do. (But it's not luck - its being willing to work with enough people to get the results you want. You can be in control of how much you earn).
I have been in a direct sales company for 3 years and love it - if you want more details message me, but I don't want to "advertise" here :)
