Seeking a Vet That Won't Make Me Go Bankrupt (Norwood Park Area)

Hi, I was hoping that someone had some referrals for a vet in the Norwood Park area. I have a 2 cats and a dog. I just took them to the vet yesterday (a total of 3 shots, 1 T4 blood test, anal sacs squeezed and 3 office visit charges) and my bill was $400! I have been going to Niles Animal Hospital for about 2 yrs. My other vet retired. :( I love my animals and believe in the vet care, I really like my doctor at Niles but we cannot afford the prices. Any referrals would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all so much in advance.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses. I did actually call Abell Animal Hospital because it is close. I asked about the prices and on everything but the anal expressions they are significantly cheaper. I won't need to make an appointment for a couple of weeks when I need to refill my cats RX for Thyroid. I want to thank you all.

There is a vet on Northwest Highway in Edison Park. It is close to Tony's deli. Can't think of the name off hand. There is also a vet in Norwood Park on Northwest Highway. I actually think its called Norwood Park vet but it's right before you get to Harlem.

I think there are shelters or humane society that have locations that don't charge much for shots and check ups. Check in your area if there is anything available.

L., this isn't Norwood Park, but I've found that the Andersonville/Uptown Animal Hospital seems to have good prices. I am blind, and both my "significant other" and I have guide dogs. He took his dog there several months ago and was amazed at the difference in prices between Uptown and the place he used to go in Palatine. Uptown is around 5543 N. Clark Street, ###-###-####. They are open early and have Saturday hours. I've also heard that the Rosco Village Animal Hospital is good but have never been there. Good luck!

PS: Our dogs are Black Labs. Mine is 7; his will be 7 in January.

As far a a local vet in Norwood, I would strongly recommend Abell Animal Hospital on Northwest Highway but specifically for one vet named Dr.Singh. He is so thorough and so gentle w/all of the animals and you can tell loves his job. As far as comparing it pricewise to any other, I wouldn't know bc we went to Dr. Singh since we got our dog as a puppy 4 yrs ago. But I would never leave him. He is oost-conscience for his customers though and would recommend you get certain things from PetMeds as opposed to through them to save money. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I don't know how far Bensenville is from you (At the intersection of Rt. 83 and Irving Park Road? Anyway, Dr. James Schofield has a small practice there and you'd love him! He truly loves animals, and talks to them as if they are toddlers! His practice is small and much less expensive than my previous vet in Glen Ellyn. It's worth the 1/2 hour drive there. The techs that work with him are also very friendly and talk amost exclusively to the animals. Very cute! The clients waiting are also very friendly and down to earth people! Tell him you were referred by a good friend of the Ilinois Cocker Rescue owner. Dr.Donovan also works with him, but I don't care for him...See Dr. Schofield! Let me know if it works out for you...K.

hi,
i use our local animal shelter for shots. they are so cheap! we are nearest to animal care league in oak park, but maybe the shelter in chicago has low cost vaccinens, many do.
also petco has low cost vaccines on the weekends, check their website for details. as far as sepcialty treatment for animals, i dont know of any low cost vets, but for the basic vaccines prices at petco and the shelters are worth the efforts.
best of luck,
L.

Petco offers low cost vaccination clinic. You have to check with your local Petco to find out dates and times.
Our Petco has them every other Sunday at 3. You have to stand in line, there is no appointments, but it's well worth it. We used to pay $250 for all the shots. At Petco we paid $70. The stool testing ets is a little extra but still less then a vet would charge.

I recommend finding a Banfield Pet Hospital in your area (they are usually inside a Petsmart, you can find locations at Banfield.net). They have something called Optimum Wellness Plans that cover certain services (there are four levels of plans) with a low monthly fee. I think the lowest plan for a dog is $16.95 a month, the highest is $35.95 a month. There is a one-time sign-up fee of $69.95 per pet, but after the first one the others get a discount (15%?) off the sign-up fee. Office visits are free under the plan, as are routine shots and, if you get the more inclusive plans, so are other things like bloodwork and x-rays. Their invoices are fun, they show you how much you've saved that visit and to-date. We had two dogs and two cats, and in one year saved over $1400 by having all four animals on the wellness plans. We see the Banfield in Schaumburg off Golf Road, but there are probably more that are closer to you.

We go to Northwest Animal Hospital in Des Plaines. They're on River Road, about midway between Oakton & Touhy. I love the vets there, and came to them because my golden was in a great deal of pain, and I wasn't happy with what our old vet was doing for him. We took him to Northwest Animal Hospital (referred by a friend), where the vet immediately determined it was a shoulder problem and he needed to see an ortho vet. Crushingly, it turned out to be bone cancer and we eventually had to put our beloved Rufus to sleep. But Northwest Animal Hospital did not even charge us for that initial visit, nor for the next follow-up visit after seeing the ortho vet. They were also extremely caring when we put him to sleep and troughout his illness. I have referred many friends here, who unanimously agree their prices are significantly cheaper.

I go to Abell animal hospital on NW HWY. I have 3 cats. They cahrged me 80$ per cat for their yearly exam, and 2 shots- I think I had another thing done too. I thought their prices were not that bad.
