my daughter, her father and i are going on vacation to the smoky mountains, the trip is 12 hours and at least half of it will be done at night so she will be asleep for most of it. i am looking for activities that don't cost much but will keep her occupied while we are driving(and that wont drive us crazy like listening to the dora theme song 300 times). any ideas would be much appreciated!

What can I do next?

I think you will be surprised how little she will need. I dont think you that the night thing will matter as much, she will be on her own schedule as you drive, nothing you can do! My 3 year old daughter and I drive to Vermont (11 hours) often and all the toys I bring... she forgets. We talk a lot about the passing cars, buildings and birds. Pens and paper, cards to throw in the back seat. I am sure you make great cookies, make them with her before you leave so she relates that they are hers! That would pass my time! Good luck and enjoy. get the Jack Johnson CD (curios george music 15)the whole family can listen without going nuts.

My daughter loves those Magna Doodles! We recently took a 2 hour trip, and she just drew. Also, try playing "I Spy" with her. My daughter likes that too, because it includes her in everything that is going on in the car. Good luck. And enjoy your trip!

i agree with the portable DVD, if you do'nt have one, try to borrow, they are the best!!! I'd also buy cheap toys as well, but make them a surprise, so when your daughter starts getting antsy, break the new toy out and she'll love it. Also have special treats that you wouldn't normally give. Anything to make them happy, right? I've done this going from one coast to the opposite plenty of times!

We did a car trip with our daughter when she was almost two and here are the things I would recommend:

1) A portable DVD player (if you don't have one you could maybe borrow one from a friend) for part of the trip. You'd probably have to sit back there with her to hold the player on your lap though.

2) We stopped by a dollar store and bought a bunch of little toys/games that she had never seen before. We'd hand her one and when she got bored with it we would whip out another before she got fussy.

3) Plan a few stops into your driving schedule so that she can get out and run around for a bit.

Have a good trip.
