Seeking ADHD Doctor for a 3 Year Old

Help! I am looking for a medical doctor/clinic that will diagnose and treat my 3 year old if she does in fact have ADHD. I contacted the ADD Wellness Center in Addison and they do not begin until children are 6. They said they know some doctors do start at 3, but they did not have any to recommend to me. I was very disappointed as they look at the whole child-- a team of medical doctors, nutritionists, and therapists to determine the best course of action for the individual child. Is anyone aware of another similar place that will work with preschool children?
Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who offered help to me in my search for preschools for my daughter and for a place I could go for an ADHD diangosis. The child psychologist had the same opinion as all of you, that I should definitely wait for an official diagnosis until the school years, unless she becomes very severe which she is not right now. I guess I thought I needed to know for certain to know how to proceed. The cp gave me several ideas to try with my daughter, and told me what to look for in a preschool, and suggested a play program. I have found both a kid's gym and a preschool that are very kind and willing to work with me and my daughter-- I am so excited and relieved! Thanks, Mamas, for your help!

The DSM-IV states a child must be 7 y/o before a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD can be made. That doesn't mean doctors don't treat it earlier, but they won't formally diagnose it. My son is 5 and his pediatrician suspects he has it and wants to medicate him if the current therapies we're using stop working... but they are working and so no drugs yet. And a psychiatrist would be the one to diagnose it anyhow. So, I would suggest you start there and get a psychiatrist to evaulate her and then they can recommend you to treatment facilities/options/etc such as occupational therapy and/or medicinal treatments.

Best of Luck!

I am a kindergarten teacher and I agree with everyone else to please wait till the appropriate age. I feel she is way too young to be diagnosed with something like this. I have a two year old and she requires a lot of patience because she has so much energy. It is the age. Good Luck!

I am a former school teacher (1st and 2nd grades) PLEASE wait to have her diagnosed- its still early- my thinking would be to see a nutritionist first- I saw some amazing results in kids when their diets were modified and any allergies detected- She is still so young- please take your time with this- Good Luck!!

There is no reason to medicate until they start Kindegarten. in fact, most doctors won't do it before then unless your child is severe. It is a good idea to have him checked out now so that you know, and to possible find other issues that can be treated now. I have heard very good things about a develpmental pediatrician named Peter Ray in Dallas. Also, is you contact your local school district they will test him for any developmental issues(as long as he is over 3).
