Seeking Advice on Glass or Plastic Bottles and What Brand

My best advice is to buy one of 3 or 4 kinds, and let her guide you, all 7 of my kids used a different kind, I'll list a few pro's and con's with each...

Playtex w/bags.....no real complaints much easier to keep clean.
Playtex Air.....good but does start to leak out the bottoms very frustrating.
AVENT........leeks around the nipple after a couple of months.
Basic Gerber style....good and you can find them anywhere, good thing if you walk out the door and forget a bottle!
Dr. Browns.....a little pricey but nice.

Glass or plastic I have always used plastic glass is to heavy and I hate the thought of one shattering!

We used Avent for both kids. DD is 5 weeks old and has moved to the stage 2 (1 month+) nipple. DS did okay with the trainer/sippy cups but he liked the cups with straws better. Then we moved him to the Nuby sippy cups and they were much better at staying leak proof. He's now using the Playtex "commuter" cups...they look just like the commuter coffee mugs from Starbucks. We also tried the Avent Tempo (drop-in inserts) but DD was more spitty with those than the conventional bottle.

We had one who loved the Avent bottles. Our other one never took a bottle but really liked the Avent trainer cups. Still his favorite. I did find that the trainer cup nipples leak when they get older, but never had that problem with the bottles. I can agree with what one of the others said, it really is the baby that decides. I can't tell you how many cups we tried for our picky one before Avent came out with those cups. GL and congratulations!

Use breast flow especially if you are planning to nurse. The issue with plastic is when they leak chemicals. The easiest way to prevent that is to get new ones every 3mo. or so. Also replace them if they look scratched or cloudy.

I'm lost on this issue too! I'm expecting our 2nd child in a few weeks and don't know if it's necessary to buy new bottles. The pediatrician says no, but there's been so much in the news about plastics.
We used Dr. Brown's and Avent the first time and liked both. Avent was of course easier to clean, but leaked sometimes if screwed on too tightly.

I had purchased many bottles and found that the Nuk bottles worked the best. From experience bottles have to be the hardest to decide and really the person that decides is your little girl. My daughter prefered the nipple on this one. They also had the binkeys that were the same so she just prefered them. I really think the plastic bottle chemicals debate is a little over anylising. I was fed from a plastic bottle and I am just fine. Really it is what works for you! Good Luck again :)

We used Avent bottles and I loved them. Sometimes the lids can be "tempermental" and leak if you don't get them on just so (too loose or too tight and they can leak). I loved the different stages of nipples and the fact that you can change to trainer spouts. If I had another baby, I would use them again.

My friend has the Playtex Vent Aire and complained of leaking and losing the little plastic valve that cannot be replaced.

The problem with plastic is when it gets scratched, it leaks chemicals into the milk. This can be avoided by hand washing, inspecting them, and replacing when scratched. They didn't know this when my children used them but they seem to be just fine anyway!

Hey - I really liked Dr. Brown's at first - it really helps with the gasiness. But now that y son is used to breastfeeding he doesn't like the nipples of those as much. Definitely get the GLASS bottles...the hard plastics like Dr. Browns, Avent, or even a hard plastic Nalgene Bottle emit bad chemicals that cause brain cancer and all sorts of other stuff when you put boiling water in them. I use Playtex when I'm using a premade or already cooled formula so I don't have to worry about the heat emitting toxins. There's another brand that's been recommended to me that i haven't tried yet called Born Free...they're plastic but supposedly safe. I've heard Gerber are safe too. Also - especially with the water reports out now I'd boil any water you are using with formula...

I used Adiri for a little while because my daughter would not take any other bottle. Now she uses Avent and we love it. We also have an Avent sippy cup she uses. Which is nice because you can use the bottles with the sippy cup lid.

I use the Playtex Drop-Ins and I love them. They have the disposable liners so you only have to wash the nipples. I alos like that you can squeeze all the extra air out to cut back on any gas. You can by generic liners to cut down on cost. I haven't had any trouble with these bottles leaking. I just bought extra nipples so I always have a clean supply on hand. You really only need a couple of the actual bottles so they don't take up much space in the cupboard. I did find my son likes the rubber nipples better than the silicone but you will want to try both kinds to see which your baby prefers. I know they sell a starter kit that includes everyting you need in the begining. If you are planning on nursing they also have a storage kit for breast milk. I used it while I was still nursing, now I use those rings and lids for when we are on the go. Good luck maiking you decision and congrats on the upcoming baby.

My son was a preemie and was in the NICU for 19 days. I had to pump because so many preemies can't nurse. Because I had decided to breatfeed I hadn't done any reasearch about bottles. When I got to bring him home i asked hisoccupational therapist which bottle to use. He had me buy the Avent bottles. They are a bit more expensive but I love them. The only problem with them is they are bigger around so it took Conor some time to be able to hold it in his little hands. Also the quality of nipple is amazing. I remember with my two older son's once they got teeth they would bite holes in the nipples. Conor has had teeth for 2 months now and hasn't been able to do that with the silicone nipple. We are going to have another baby in the next year or so and I wouldn't use any other bottle but the AVENT.
