My son is good at telling me he needs to go potty. He just started doing pee on his own but I'm having a hard time teaching him to do number 2 on his own and cleaning himself. Does anyone have any advice on how to teach him to clean himself?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded with their recommendation; they're all really great. The wipes sound like a great idea and I think this will be easier for my 2 year old son to clean himself.

Once again many thanks to all who responded.

i went through that same thing!! i actually set up a reward system with my son. i had a little jar of m and m's that i made look really special with a ribbon around it and his name. if i remember correctly, i think i even had him decorate it with me??? Anyway, every time he wiped himself without my help, i'd reward him with 5 m and m's. after about 2 weeks, it was a regular thing and no candy was needed! :) good luck!! :)

I would definitely make sure that you put wipes into the bathroom next to the potty. They have the little Kudos (I think that's what they're called) that are for toddlers, and with wipes it makes it easier to keep their little bottoms clean. Just make sure that he understands that every time he goes #2 he HAS to wipe, no matter what. Make it a mandatory 3 wipe minimum. This way he has a guideline to go on.

hola bessy!
so this is what i did My son is 6 and theres days still now he calls for me to wipe him..im not sure if your referring about your 2 or 5 yr old..my son loves doing what grown ups do..so what i did was one i got him a really good step stool( so that he could get up and down easly of the toilet them i bought him big boy wipes kandoos by pampers(baby wipes will also do the job but this got him more excited) and i made sure he had "reading material" in there just like us..lol..the first few times i wiped him and made sure he heard everything i was doing..the next couple of times i let him sit there till he was ready about 20 mins after he was done..I told him that if he didnt learn he couldnt go to school..so he slowly started to get the picture ..he of course left the door open and spent about 45 mins in there "in his office"..i say give him time if you force them and they arent ready it will only make it harder..just make it fun

Most children, even if they "know" how to wipe themselves after they go poop, don't have the skills to wipe themselves in a way that they will be clean. You should indeed encourage him to use flushable wipes (there is a brand called Kandoo in all supermarkets that makes these wipes) but most mommies continue to check an/or wipe their children's bottoms after poop well into their 4th and 5th years. If they do leave fecal matter on their bottoms, they can easily get rashes and be rather uncomfortable (no one likes poop left on their butt!), so encourage him to wipe himself with wipes when he is done using the bathroom, and they YOU check and wipe him after he is done to make sure all is well down there.

Definitely be patient, as this is a learning process for your son.

I still wipe my 4 1/2 year old son after he poops. Sometimes I tell him I have to "clean him like he was a baby" (which is laying down) to make sure I get it all and even put some diaper cream so his "butt doesn't itch." Usually though, I wipe and then he wipes too, making sure it's "from the bottom up." Good luck!

Bessy,
For my son I just gave him some toilet paper, and told him to wipe his bum. I put his hand back there and helped him the first few times then after that he got it. Told him that if he didn't wipe then his bum would hurt and he didn't want that.

Are you referring to your 2 year old? You can teach him how to clean himself but you are probably going to be unhappy with the results for a while. What was helpful with my kids was to have them wipe and then let me know when they were ready for me to review their work, so to speak. I found this much better for me than trying to get skid marks out in the laundry. And yes, toddler wipes are great! One of the best inventions ever.

If it's your two year old...he probably can't reach. Babies/small children are out of proportion for older child/adult activities. He may still be too small. It sounds kind of funny, but see if your child can put his arm over the top of his head and touch his ear on the other side. If he can...his arms are long enough. If not, they are still too short.
