Seeking Advice on How to Transition 22 Month Old from High Chair to Booster Seat

Moms I purchased a Mutsy Grow up Booster seat for my son several months ago. He freaked out the first few times we tried to put him in it. We let him sit in his high chair again and only recently tried to put him back in the booster seat. He absolutely refuses. He has totally outgrown his high chair and we want him to practice eating at the dinner table at home. He will sit in booster seats when we take him out to restaurants, but he often wants to get out, until we can distract him (which is normal enough). Any advice on how to get our son to try out the seat (other than maybe putting the high chair away completely)?

What can I do next?

I would just leave him in his highchair until he was ready to sit at the table. I let both my girls decide and my 23 month old just recently starting refusing the highchair and her booster to sit at the table like her big sister.

Hi V.!

It sounds like he LOVES his highchair :o) He might not be ready for this "bigboy" change. Is it really "unsafe" for him to be in the highchair? I remember I had my kids in the highchair until they were like 4 or something :o)

If it IS really unsafe for him to be in his highchair, then you have no choice but to get it out of the house, and work through any tears :o(

I purchased a traveling highchair. It was a Booster Seat with a tray, straps and all (like a highchair). The best part about it was that it was only the top portion of ahighchair (no leges) and it strapped to ANY chair, barstool, picnic table, etc.... I could literally take it anywhere and use it! Then I could just hose it off, because it was all plastic. Anyway, this might be a good transition highchair for your son. I don't think I spent any more than $20-$25 on The Booster Chair.

Good Luck V. :o) He's just trying to be "independent" in a "dependable" enviroment :o)

Hi V.,

I am a grandma to my now 24-month-old baby girl who spends a lot of time with me. When she was small I bought a portable high chair as I did not want the expense of the full size one. I got it at Target for about $50. I believe it is what Bettina D is talking about. You can take it anywhere. It does come with the table top so you can use it on the floor, camping, outside, anywhere you need to.

Right now since she is older, we stopped using the tray and have it strapped to the kitchen chair. It has straps from behind the chair and also underneath so it is fully secure and will not fall off. It is large enough for her to still use it for quite some time. (At least another year, maybe two). It is hard plastic with a plastic cover that can be cleaned easily. We just pull her up to the table in it and call her a 'big girl'.

It still seems like a high chair in every way except there is no tray. If your son still doesn't feel comfortable, you could always attach the tray and pull him close to the table for a while and try to take the tray off at a later date. Unfortunately it is another expense, but it may worth it. In the future you could move on to the booster seat.

Just an idea. Good luck with your son.

Sincerely,

B. T.

Hi V.,

It might be a sense of security because of the strapping in or the little tray that goes in front of him.

I bought a travel type booster that straps on to chairs and it has a little tray on it too. I never really used the tray, just brought my kids up to the table. The cool thing is that there are straps on it like a high chair so maybe if you used something like that he can have the sense of security with the snaps, yet be pulled up to the table.

I got it pretty inexpensively at Target years ago, something similar to this: (I tried posting the url in here, but it cut it off... go to Target.com and search "Fisher-Price Healthy Care Booster". Its the orange and yellow one.)

It straps on to the chair, and you can make the transition to the chair later much easier 'cause he'll be used to being up close at the table. The cool thing is that it's portable, so you can use it anywhere. (I keep one at grandma's house for my 16 mth old) My 3 year old still fits in it too.

Oh, and make sure to buy one of these hard plastic ones. I had one that was made of fabric and zips up... not good for a large baby... it just tips over with the weight. I'm thinking at 22 months, he's not very small anymore. :-)

Hope that helps.

Hi V.,

I raised four boys (all adult now) and have two grandchildren (5 and 3). I have never had a booster seat. I put the kids at the table on thier knees on a regular table chair. They were all able to reach the table and had the feeling that they were "big kids" and had more control. I did put a really thick dictionary on the chair for my grandson to sit on as he wanted to be a little higher at the table. A thick phone book would work too.

Good luck!

I'm not familiar with the brand, but maybe you could try putting the booster seat on the floor and letting him sit in it and play with it so he'll feel comfortable with it. Just a thought!

We use a booster seat that straps to the chair and it also has a belt so that our son doesn't stand up and try to get down while we are eating. Our son is 16 months and when we made the transition a few months ago he was so happy to be sitting at the table, it wasn't a problem. We then put the high chair in the garage. Good luck.
