Seeking Advice on Possible Health Issue for My 10 Year Old Daughter.

Wondering weather to call my daughters pediatrician or if this is normal. My 10 year old daughters one nipple is larger than the other. Not by a lot but enough that she noticed it. She pinches it and it contracts and then looks the same size as the other nipple but then it swells again shortly after and is a little bigger again. I'm wondering if this is just the beginning of puberty and if it is normal for some to develop a little unevenly at first? I asked her if she had any pain and I checked for any lumps but doesn't seem to be any. She doesn't want me to call the doctor but I will if I think there is cause for concern. Has anyone else had this experience or know anything about this? I would appreciate any info you might have.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone for all the great responses and advice. I feel much better about the situation now and am all most positive it is the beginning of puberty. Hopefully it won't happen to fast but I look forward to the next phase of growing up. By the way I did buy the book The Care & Keeping of You - The Body Book for Girls at Target yesterday and my daughter loves it. She started reading it immediately and said it was great. Thanks again, C.

hi C., my daughter is 19 and hers was the same way, one side was like a marble and the other side was like a pea, but they are the same size now, for peace of mind you can call her doctor, but at 1o she isn't going to want to go for this reason. J. L.

It is most likely puberty. And breast are always uneven. Each one is a little defferent from the other, my guess is that she will be growing for a while and they will even out.

I have two girls one 22 and one 17, we've been through this.

Just let her know she is growing up, and she is normal.

Hi C.,
I personally experiance the same thing about the same age. For me it was the starting of puberty and I'm not sure how long it took but it eventually evened out as my breast developed. I'd keep my eye on it over the next couple of months and if she's not complaining it should be fine. If you just "happen" to need a check up yourself at the doctors you could have her come a long just to be safe. Maybe having her wear a training bra or sports bra would help her feel more comfortable if she's feeling uncomfortable.
Good luck!

yes its puberty...go to the book store and find the right book for her. American Girl has a book out for someone her age about her body changes...and when she's a little older, there are more good books out there.

Welcome to the "tween" years. My daughter is 10 also. She is developing way ahead of her classmates. She will be 11 in 2 weeks, so she's a little older than some. It's a fact of life. Pretty soon she will be going through other changes too. Be there for her and talk to her about all the things that are yet to come so that she knows that she can come to you about everything she's going through. My daughter had to show me her first hairs!! It's a fun age!! It's a great way to connect with your growing daughter. Watch the bump and if there is pain or discomfort, go see your doctor. I wouldn't be too concerned yet.

Hi C.,
I had the exact same issue when I was ten (I am now 39). One breast is slightly larger than the other, but not noticeably different. My doctor assured me that this was normal.
Also, there is a great book by the American Girl collection on growing up. The title of the books is: The Care & Keeping of You - The Body Book for Girls. It really does a great job of explaining body changes and it's directed directly to young adolescent girls. I believe I saw it in Target.

I had a similar situation happen to me when I was about your daughter's age. One of my breasts became swollen. I did not have any pain or lumps either. My mom took me to see the pediatrician and he determined that it was in fact puberty beginning. I would recommend having your pediatrician check it out...better safe than sorry. But it sounds like she is beginning puberty. I hope this helps!

Hi C.-

I remember growing one side much quicker then the other one, and my 12 year old daughter is developing the same way. I bought "The Caring Keeping Of You, The Body Book For Girls." I think it's by American Girl, and I saw a previous writer wrote about the American Girl book as well. My daughter LOVES the book.

Good Luck, write if you have other questions.

Yep, I concur with the others...I remember mine developing that way too -- one nipple grew faster/sooner than the other. To this day, each of the two of them is slightly different in appearance (and one breast produces more milk than the other), so I don't think we can expect symmetry with them!

Isn't puberty fun?!

It sounds like puberty. I bought my daughter "The Period Book"
which explains all about the changes of puberty. It even mentions that one side may start to develop before the other, but not to worry that it will catch up.

BTW she loved reading the book, and it helped me to know what exactly we should talk about on the subject.

I really wouldn't worry too much; I experienced the same thing when I was younger and honestly, I think one of my nipples is still bigger than the other (I really can't say for sure since gravity has taken it's toll after having two kids fifteen years apart). As long as there is no lumps, pain or nipple discharge, I think your daughter is safely going through puberty. It's rare when any female's breasts are exactly alike anyway. Good luck to your growing daughter, you can let her know we are all beautifully imperfect in our own way! :)

Hi C.,
Just thought I'd add my 2 cents of reassurance, even tho Christy H. Just said the same thing....this happened to me when I was developing. 4th grade I think it was. My mom didn't say a word about it but I was SO embarrassed!! You could see the little bump thru my t shirts and I felt like everyone was staring at it!! So be sensitive that she may be feeling that way. If so, perhaps she could wear a camisole or comfy sport bra type thing just to sort of keep it flat under her shirts for a while? Just a thought. I do remember mine being a little tender if I rolled over on it when I slept, etc. Puberty! UGH. Good luck!

*Editing my response* : Your post just got me thinking of this (LOVE this website!) and I remembered something so funny! When this was happening to me I didn't tell ANYONE! But I did discover that a friend had the same thing going on. Well, being the 70's - tube tops were in (great!)so, to even out our little "one boob" situation we would stick a cotton ball in our tube tops where the other one should've been!! Weird! We thought we looked great then until her older brothers called us out on it and made fun of us!!! Stupid BOYS!! hahaha sorry for the long post but I just had to share that. Good luck with your daughter, this time will never come again!! :-) Janet

When my daughters started puberty they each got little bumps in there chest were their boobies were growing. Each of my girls grew at different rates. But each one of them at the start of puberty had the little bumps and they said they were tender. Yes each breast grew at different rates and were uneven for awhile. I was told by their Dr that that was normal.
I would give a call to the nurse and ask her if what you are finding is OK. If not then take her in to be checked.
Let your daughter know that we have to watch out for our bodies and that Dr.s are there to help no matter the problem.
If we have a question about what is going on then you need to ask.
Good luck.

My daughter developed the same "symptom", one swollen nipple, at age 10 also. The other side started 4-5 months later. She was a bit worried at first, but I told her "how exciting, you must be growing up", even though I was not sure at first if it really was puberty. Sure enough, the other signs began to follow. My other daughter was much later. So each girl is different, but I strongly suspect everything is perfectly normal for your daughter. Take care.

It is definitely normal. I remember having the same issues as a child and I remember being worried but it is perfectly normal to develop that way. My sisters also remember the same worry. It should clear up with time and she'll be evened out before she knows it. Maybe just get her a bra that will help mask the problem until then.

Most likely due to her age it is puberty. I only know this because my 5yo daughter had the same but has since gone away. In my daughters case, the Dr. said it was not the early onset of puberty, just something we need to wait and see on. Since it went away we don't have to do any lab work. Have you noticed your daughter starting to get hair? In all those fun places of course? If so, then it is probably puberty. If not, then it wouldn't hurt to have her checked out.

Best wishes,
M.

Your daughter is fine. The breasts will grow at different rates and will eventually even out, but they will never be the exact same size. I am 32 and still have one boob that is larger than the other. If she hasn't gotten her period yet you will notice other things too. Is her hair oily? at this age it seems like you can't get it clean. I was freaking out with my daughter until I went to her class and saw all of the other oily hair girls. She may need to start using deodorant and you will start noticing some hair. My daughter was always a hairy kid and she was embarrassed by it so I bought her an electric shaver. that way I knew she wasn't going to cut herself.

I have heard that you can expect her period about 6 months after the hair and breasts come in. I don't know how accurate that is, but it is coming.

When this happened to me, my mom took me to the store and helped me choose my first training bra. (I think I was in fourth grade) She explained that I would be growing and that it would help give me support. She also told me that it was OK if one side or the other was a different size. I remember that I was the only girl in the class who had a training bra, but that I was also the only one who was not embarrasssed about having nipples showing through my shirt.

Hi C.!

I can only share what happened to me as a young girl, and I clearly remember although it was over 20 years ago! I developed on one side before the other, noticably! My mom rushed me to the doctor in a panic only to find out it was normal (puberty), making me feel like something was wrong with me! She made this HUGE ordeal out of it...rushing me to buy bras etc., and I just remember wishing it would go away!

My only advice would be just to talk to her, or as others have suggested, buy her a book that can help her understand. Reassure her it's completely normal and ok, and a wonderful and beautiful thing! If the need to buy bras comes up, which it inevitably will...make it a girl's day out...lunch, bra shopping, maybe a pedicure, etc!

Best of luck to you and your little girl!

My girlfriend had this and it was a benign cyst that kept growing. She waited too long to have it removed, her Dr. said it may go away..it didn't. After she had it removed her breast were significantly different in size and is now contemplating augmenting the one so her breast match (one B and one D). I would definitely have it checked out. This may also be a great opportunity to introduce your daughter to bodily changes, periods, etc and collect information.

i would think that it was just puberty. my 12 year old son had the same thing and i was concerned and took him to the doctor a few months ago. sure enough the doctor said it was puberty and would go away. as long as it isnt painful i would be too concerned. i would just kind of keep an eye on it. good luck with your little girl growing up!!
