Hi. We recently opened a new business and are trying to find the best ways to spread awareness of and educate the community about dyslexia. It often goes misdiagnosed at schools and we could use any advice you might have in where to go to publicize our new business. We have an ad in Columbus Parent. Thanks if you can help.

What can I do next?

Some schools have yearly directories that are sent to all the homes of registered students. Often the school sells ad space in them, for a low price. I know Bexley has this. Most schools also sell ad space in the school play hand outs.
I'm Dyslexic and was lucky to have support at home and school, due to this I was able to graduate collage with a magna cumlaudi, still can't spell:} Thanks for getting that support for others, it will change lives!

J., I want to thank you for doing this! I have a 15 year old with Dyslexia and the only thing available at the time we discovered it was one two week course in Maryland which wasn't feasible in the least. We learned everything by trial and error. Thankfully, he is doing well and doesn't let it stand in his way. His early school years were horrendous, but he's now a high school graduate and taking his first college courses. If I can be of any assistance, please don't hesitate to say so. Parents DO need to hear what you have to say and hopefully, you will get the word out to many!

You could always send home flyers to parents through the local schools. Good luck on your venture!

If you are offering a clincical intervention service as a certified specialist, and you have a sucessful history of bringing about measurable progress (with standard clincial measurment tools) for children with Dyslexia, you should be able to make connections with private practitioners who diagnose (but do not treat dyslexia) to make referals to you for intervention.

As an educational advocate for children with disabilites, I always caution parents about seeking evaluations provided by businesses who have a service to sell, especially if they design thier own evaluations, because only standardized evaluations are usefull to them if they wish to seek compensatory service or reimbursements from a school who has dropped the ball.

Schools have an affirmative obligation to provide service, and parents are within thier rights to seek appropriate services if the school does not provide it, and then seek compensation, but they have to be able to prove thier case by meeting a very narrow set of circumstances to do so. If your services fit this category, you should not have any difficulty finding clients once you have a repuation as a solid intervetntion specialaist.

I have to say, my antena always goes up when I see someone "promoting awareness" when they are promoting a service, even if it is a legitamate and effective service. I would suggest that you rephrase and affiliate yourself with a clincian who can make referrals for you.

As a special ed. teacher who works with the learning disabled I would suggest that you try the various teaching resource stores. Often parents shop there as well as teachers. You might consider putting a new business article in your local Suburban Newspaper for your area. K.

Do you have a website? That is one of the best ways to promote it... just make sure that you have lots of content that's updated often so that you make sure that you have good search engine results.
