Seeking Advice on the Results of Glucose Tolerance Test in Pregnancy

I am pregnant (currently at 23weeks) with our second child. My first pregnancy was completely normal without any complications. This time, as a routine test, my OB ordered for me to take the 1 hour Glucose tolerance test. The upper limit of normal is 140 and my result came back at 141. So, now my doctor wants me to go ahead and take the full 3 hour test. I am quite nervous that I have developed gestational diabetes. I have a “normal” weight of 142 pounds; have only gained 13 pounds so far during this pregnancy. I have no history of diabetes in my family, and am not a diabetic myself, nor did I develop diabetes with my first pregnancy. I am wondering if there are any other moms out there who “failed” the first screening 1 hour glucose tolerance test, but then ended up having a normal 3 hour glucose tolerance test, hence not being diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Please help, I am quite nervous.

So What Happened?

Thank you very much for your response. I was quite worried when I got the news about the 1 hour test, so my doctor made me do a 3 hour test and it came back normal. I am so relieved. I am definitely still going to watch the types of carbs I intake and minimize my sugar intake just to be sure since the 1 hour test was in fact high.
I really appreciate everyone’s concern and their prompt replies. It is good to get feedback from other moms who have been in the same shoes. I am new to mamsource and I think this is a wonderful resource for any and all mom needs. I am glad to be a part of the community.

With my first pregnancy I was 5 points over on my 1 hour and slightly elevated on my 2 hour reading of the 3 hour test. If you are elevated at all with your 3 hour, they will probably have you do some tests where you go in having fasted all night, they take your blood, you eat a regular meal then 1 hour later they take your blood. I was OK on those tests. I was able to control mine completely with diet. As was already said, NO juice and no simple carbs 1st thing in the morning, that includes milk. All other fruits and milk should be limited and eaten with protein. But they will give you information on all this. I have since had 3 more children with no gestational diabetes. If you are careful, you are probably in good shape for this to stay a minor issue.

I was borderline with gestational diabetes for both my pregnancies and there is nothing really to worry about. It sounds like you are borderline as well. Just watch your in take of sugar as you go along during your pregnancy and everything should be fine. The doctor should monitor you on a regular basis. Both my children were normal size (6 lbs 14 oz) when they were born and I was healthy.

Hi M.,
I had a pretty severe case of gestational diabetes (220 blood sugar at 11 weeks). Through my travels and sharing with other women, I did hear a lot of stories about women who tested high or borderline, but were able to manage it through diet. It didn't work for me (I worked diligently at it, too!), but I also come from a family with a long history of diabetes.
My point to you is that your test result does not mean you will develop full blown GD. The main thing with diet is to get rid of sugar, and be careful with fruit and carbohydrates. One thing that did help me was to eat protein and vegetables first, and then it slowed down the sugar processing for anything I ate after that. Oh, and definitely watch out for fruit juice - it's like sending sugar straight through the veins.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about diet and such. I really made a science project out of it. I would try out different foods and combinations of foods, and test my blood sugar before and after everything I ate. I learned a lot about food and diet that I didn't know before that. I'd be happy to share what I learned if you need it.
Joy and Blessings,
M.
