My son doesn't have eczema but sunscreen used to break him out. So I started using just straight zinc oxide. I got it at walmart. The only thing I didn't like was that it is not clear when you rub it in. It is white.
Hi N.,
My sister is in Dermatology and she advises that we use Neutrogena UltraSheer SPF 55 with HELIOPLEX. It's lightweight, oil-free, PABA free, UVA/UVB protection, etc. We use this day to day, and the kids don't mind it.
We also have a boat and are very active in the summertime, sometimes going out several times a week. For water play, we use a product line called Blue Lizard. It's an Australian sunscreen that comes in many different formulations- regular, sensitive, face, baby. You can now find it at some drugstores or dermatology offices. This has the same protection as the Neutrogena, but it stays on much better. My sister says that Australian sunscreens have to pass much stricter guidelines than American sunscreens. These sunscreens are more expensive, but they're worth it for our family. Both of our kids have fair complexions, and even by the end of the summer, they have hardly any suntans.
You have to reapply ALL sunscreens, especially if the kids are sweating or swimming.
Good luck!

Hi N.,
well coming from someone who has suffered from excema and a few other skin conditions for a long time I want to tell you one thing before going to your question. I know the advice is unsolocited but if someone had told me this years ago I would have taken the advice whole heartedly.
please, sometime soon call your pediatritian and ask to arrange a skin allergy patch test at a local dermatologist. Ask to be screened for everthing including metals.
the test is not painful just annoying. They'll put stickers on your daughters back each containing and allergen. she'll have to wear it for several days. (eww I know) but you can find things that are setting her skin off into more painful breakouts.
ok now the sunscreen.. Try to veer away from cream fom sunscreen. get the newer spray sunscreen that is aerosol. aveen has one the I do great with even though it is lightly scented and well I am allergic to it if it smells like anything that smells nice (pretty much) Also look for the other varieties that say clear or no rub and tearfree. the cream forms of anything can clog those already afflicted pores and just make a hot house for those little blisters that form.
more advice stay away from petroleum products and GET THAT SKIN PATCH TEST!
Good luck and I truely feel for your little one. bless her heart. I know it isn't easy and it never goes away. I hope my advice helps somehow.
N., Have you heard of Arbonne? They are a 28 year old company that has products that are Pure, Safe and Beneficial in which they have a 45 day money back guarantee. They have a sunscreem spf30 for children that has no chemicals and that alot of the time is what causes eczema. I personally have had eczema. I am affiliated with Arbonne and you can check out my website at successfromtheheart.myarbonne.com. If you would like feel free to call me at ###-###-####. Thanks, K. S
Try 'City Block' by Clinique.
Whatever you choose, choose chemical free. It's usually the chemicals in sunscreen they are allergic to. Neutrogena does make a chemical free sunscreen (not just the helioplex which is better for adults). It is labeled Neutrogena Sensitive Skin & says on the front "No Irritating Chemical Sunscreens". I've also heard great things about Arbonne but it is about $10 more expensive. You may want to try the Neutrogena chemical free first. I found it at WalMart. If it doesn't work, you can use it or give it away & go for the Arbonne. God Bless your family!
A friend of mine has two children with the same problem. She's found that the Arbonne sunscreen works for her children. Hope that helps!
My 5 year old also has eczema and we had great sucuss with the NO AD Brand, especially the blue bottled formulation. It's cheaper, too! She did really well when we started using the spray on (no rubbing in necessary). Almost like rubbing those chemicals in just made things worse.
Also, her eczema and allergies were still pretty out of control back then. There was only one body wash in the world that didin't make her break out and only 2 shampoos that made the cut. No hairspray EVER and no smelly sprays the girls all love to use. But, now her allergies are much better and we can use any sunscreen/shampoo/body wash, etc. we want on her!
We did lots of things we did to get her eczema under control:
1. Daily antihistimine and daily singulair. Every day, no matter what, even if symptoms are better.
2. Aquaphor after every bath/shower. Eucerin is too thick and you can't rub it in! Before we put the Aquaphor HEALING Ointment (as opposed to the Original which works all right, but the healing is better) we always look/ask/check for those recurring itchy spots (for Elli those are toes, behind the knees, backs of arms) and put her prescription steroid cream on, even if they are just a little bit itchy. Okay, so 1/2 of you are freaking out now, but let me make my arguement! When Elli was a baby, we had to use steroid cream ALL the time because she was miserable. She didn't eat, she didn't sleep, all she did was cry and itch and scratch. We would wait and wait and wait and only use the steroid cream on the really bad places and we would have to use it 2-3 times per day for several weeks to get it under control and avoid secondary infections. THen we would try to stop using it on that spot as soon as possible and it would inevitiably come back. Horrible. Our allergist suggested hitting the "bad" spots right away and hitting them until they were gone. We were obviously so worried about our little girl and all this topical steroid application, etc. What we discovered, though, is that within 3 weeks, we were having fewer and fewer spots to apply the steroid to and within 3 months, there were none. Now, we ask/look/check EVERY day, but only apply steroid cream to certain areas maybe 10 times a year. It usually only takes one application and is gone. (Remember we used to wait until it got bad and then it would take weeks of steroid cream?..) Now she is happy and healthy and her skin is not falling off from itching or infection, she is getting less steroid cream exposure and living a normal life - hooray!!!
3. Go see an allergist if you have not. Your daughter's skin is just hyper-reacting to everything. Finding out what she is allergic to and cutting it out of her life will help her in all areas. Elli is currently taking allergy shots for her worst offenders and it also has made such a difference for her (especially with her asthma).
4. Hang in there - it's a tough road to peace with eczema, but you'll get there. Trust me, I haven't told you 1/16 of the stories with Elli, but I will reiterate that she was so miserable as a baby (and her entire family was miserable with her!!!). But now she is a happy, healthy, sweet, fun little girl who can go places and do things!
Hi N. - I'm an Arbonne Consultant and we have a fabulous sunscreen formulated for super sensitive skin. I would be happy to send you a sample if you would like to try it. Let me know!

Arbonne! I wish I had known about the Arbonne baby line when my girls, now 7 & 11, were smaller--it is wonderful for kids w/eczema b/c there are no chemical fragrances (only botanical) which can irritate, no mineral oil (which is occlusive & clogs pores & doesn't allow skin to breathe), and contains no animal products or byproducts. Also, the products are pediatrician-tested, not just recommended. If I can help you further, please let me know, as I have a business w/Arbonne...great products & great opportunity, for stay at home or working moms! Thanks & God bless, A. ###-###-####
Hey Nicki
I have to say I know several other moms on here that have had the same question and I have talked to them too. I am a mother of a 2 year old with extremely severe eczema. I mean last summer her feet were soooo bad they would bleed if she wore sandals. Long story short I found a company that makes ALL kinds of products that are free of harsh chemicals and they have the BEST products for sensitive skin. There lotion is the best I have found and I have used Cetaphil and Eucerein.
However, the sunscreen is great and it is a cream that has not caused her to break out and does not burn when I apply it. If you would like more info please let me know I would be glad to share it with you! Like I said I use everything from there bath soaps, laundry detergent and many more and her skin looks great!! If you would like I can give you a call and tell you all about what I use and what it had done!! Hope to talk to you soon!!
Thanks

Arbonne's baby care (ABC) has sunscreen, lotion, wash, diaper ointment and oil that work great on clearing up eczema. I've even known adults who suffer from eczema who started using these products and have seen results.
Go to www.arbonne.com
If you don't have a friend who sells arbonne just contact me and I can get the product for you at a discounted price.
My 3 yr old has dry skin, her eczema doesn't break out usually until summer, behind her knees and elbows, and the No-Ad does work well. Last summer her baby sister was 6 mos old so I needed a baby sunscreen and got Hawaiian Tropic Baby faces and Tender Places, it has less chemical sunscreens-feels a bit like elmer's glue when you put it on, but the kids don't mind it. I also worked with a boy who had horrible allergies and had to use eucerin facial moisturizer with SPF as his sunscreen-much more expensive, but you have to do what works!
We use arbonne. I love it. My sun is very sensitive to lotions and things and we haven't had any problems with this. Good luck
I also recommend the Arbonne sunscreen. I would also recommend that you try the baby wash, oil and lotion from that line for the eczema. There are other products that Arbonne makes that I have found worked well for my nephew's eczema. Go to SkincareSolutions.myarbonne.com to see the products. Call me at ###-###-#### to try them before you buy them as well as receive your 25% Mamasource discount.
I liked your honesty in your bio. You sound like your personality is similar to mine-straight forward.
Good luck!
I personally use coppertone sport spray, no rub. It does not affect my eczema. I personnaly have alwayed had problems with suncreens I have to rub on i.e. lotions. The target spray on brand also works well with my eczema. Best to you and your daughter.
If your daughter is older than six months you can buy the Aveeno sunscreen. They do have a baby version but I have not found it yet. My son has very sensitive skin and my daughter has a slight case of eczema too and I think this will work well for them.
Blue Lizard sunscreen is what we use. The Dermatologist recommended it and so far we love it. It is kind of hard to find but you can order off the internet. Also supposedly you can find it at CVS but we did not find any at ours. We finally found it at our ULTA store.
My daughter used Arborrne for her skin to reduce breakouts. I switched to dry therapy lotion at Akins and she is completely cured. My suggestion is to go with an all natural sunscreen. The chemicals in the lotions is probably what is causing the problems. It was for my daughter. Arbonne is all natural also and what I use. But if you get a good base lotion to fix the skin, the Arbonne should work just fine. It's called Children's Dry Therapy at Akins. It's about $8.00 a bottle but so WORTH it.
We use Arbonne also!! The entire baby line helps w/eczema!! It's great!! It doesn't have any chemical fragrances to irritate your skin.
Good Luck!! D'Anne
arbonne!! i have the best pediatrician ever and he even started offering it in his office to his excema patients. if you do not have a consultant in you area, you can find it on ebay. good luck!
My 6 yr old has horrible eczema that leaves his skin chronically dry and flakey. The best sunscreen we have found is NoAd from Walmart. I am currently trialing the Coppertone spray on. He has used it once with no sideeffects. Keeping my fingers crossed...
