Hello,

We just moved to Kadena. I was wondering if any other Mom's might have ideas of some after school activities for My Daughter who's turning 6 at the end of the month.

I have been looking for ways for her to meet new friends to play with. So far we only know our 2 neighbors and one of them is moving soon.

Thanks,

L.

Hi. Have you tried the youth center? They have a really nice center. I know they have drama, karate, and gymnastics.

Welcome to Okinawa. We've been here a year ourselves. We have a daughter who is 7. She started seidokan (karate) about 6 months ago. She really enjoys it. It has really gotten her out of her shell and she has met some great kids there. She also does taiko drumming through her school (KES). We got introduced to the karate through her taiko teacher who is also her sensei. It's located off base, fairly priced and a very flexible schedule. I've also heard that the youth center has a lot of available activities like dance, piano, and gymnastics. But when we tried there was always a waiting list. It's also a lot more expensive.

We're on Kadena as well, with a 2yr and 2 mo, I know that it can be hard to get your kids into a lot of the programs here, there are wait lists for just about everything, so sign up as soon as you hear about something. The only activity that I have real knowledge about is an offbase Brazilian martial arts guy, he runs a Capoiera academy above Obliggato's mexican restaurant on 58 just south of gate 1, and he has kids classes. (he used to be in our unit)

Hi Rhiannon!
We live on Okinawa as well but on Kinser. I spend alot of time on Kadena. Have you checked out the youth center? They have alot of great events and programs. My children are enrolled in the homeschool gymnastics there. They also have after school gymnastics and dance there for a reasonable cost. Also there is free mini golf at the Schilling community center.

Hi,
My name is A. and I am a military spouse as well. We live on Camp Foster, but we are stationed at Kadena. I have a 2 year old son. I don't know of many activities for after school other than maybe signing her up for the school age program for a few hours a week for after school. She should meet lots of kids that way and they pick them up from school also. Also, there are cheer squads and sports that she could sign up for. I think the school age program would be the best thing for her though. She will get a chance to interact with other kids in a safe and friendly environment. I don't know the policies over here, but I worked at a school age program at our last base, and the kids loved coming there and playing with each other. It was structured almost like school, with lesson plans and everything, just not as strict. The kids are free to go from place to place to play and have fun with each other. Anyway, I am a SAHM, working on my bachelors degree in Web Design/Developement, so if you need someone to talk to or if you just want to have someone to explore the island with, I am available. I have been on the island for 2 years and almost 4 months, so I may be able to help you out a little. Just email me if you would like to chat or get together sometime. Oh, and check out my website. http://adorablehandmadegifts.webs.com and take a look at the hairbows I make for little girls(you may find something you like for your daughter). Please sign my guest book and sign up for my mailing list because I am currently adding new items to my business. I hope this helped you some. Have a beautiful, blessed day.
