HI Everyone,
I am wanting to get a jump on this year for my daughter. We have toyed with the notion that she may have some ADD tendencies. She is starting off this year with the same struggle in Math. I am wanting to go have her tested to see is she truly have a learning problem or if it is just that she needs tutoring or somw other kind of assistance. She makes "A's" and high "B's " in school, she is an avid reader, she is not a behaviour problem. However since Kindergarten her teachers main issue is that she will sometime "space out" in class, or fidget with her papers and loose focus from time to time. Her recent tests in other subjects have been 80's to 90's. Math she tanked one test, then did great on others. I am not up on ADD or any other learning problems. I am dyslexic and was only diangosed with that "officially" a year ago, so through my schooling I have found ways to compensate and I do fine. However, I dont want my kid to have to struggle if she doesnt have to. So if anyone knows of a person that can do this type of testing in Southlake/Grapevine I would really appreciate it.

What can I do next?

Hi M.,

I gave the following advice to another request, and a lot of it applies to your daughter...

I remember when I was in school, it took me forever to get going with my homework and really focus on the assignments that were to be completed (essays took me hours, and finally the words would start to flow late at night).

I wish that I knew about adaptogens back when I was studying and had to take tests! I was an excellent student; it just took me forever to finish assignments and tests.

I highly recommend an incredible book titled Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief by Winston and Maimes. From the book "There is a category of herbs called adaptogens that help the human body adapt to stress, support normal metabolic processes, and restore balance. They increase the body's resistance to physical, biological, emotional, and environmental stressors and promote normal physiologic function".

The 10 most potent adaptogens on the earth, with the highest therapeutic properties available are now delievered in a fast acting oral spray, called Tunguska Mist.

Go to www.VitalHealth.TunguskaMist.com to learn more.

Many parents have had wonderful results using the Tunguska Mist Pure to help restore balance in their children and improve their mental clarity and focus.

Tunguska Mist Pure boosts the immune system, increases mental clarity and focus, increases energy and stamina, and enhances physical performance. It tastes great, and with the intra-oral spray, over 90% of the nutrients in Tunguska Mist get absorbed immediately, and go to work within seconds.

Please let me know if you have any questions. My husband and I have been taking adaptogens for a long time, and we are passionate about helping people reduce the damaging effects of stress and restore balance NATURALLY, without medications. Good luck and God Bless:)

Best regards,
N.

If you have been diagnosed as dyslexic, you should consider being screened for celiac/gluten sensitivity.

Here's an article (from the scientific/medical literature, since you have the background) discussing the correlation:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9689235?ordinalpos=1&a...

Plus, there's more general research on neuro impacts including learning disorders in the articles below.

While you have medical training, alot of this research is very new and much of the studies into the neurological impacts of gluten are very, very recent. As well, folks that went to medical/nursing school before 2000 were taught that this was a rare disorder. It is the most-underdiagnosed genetic and chronic health condition today.

This relates to your DD since the celiac/gluten intolerance is genetically correlated. Here's an article on how it can contribute to ADD/ADHD:

http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/11... (Note: this is published in the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics)

And, here's another:

My younger son had those spacing out periods before he went on a GF/CF diet -it's made a HUGE impact on his ability to handle the school work (he has a Mensa IQ).

If you don't want to consider the gluten impact and just want a doc for your DD, I highly recommend Dr. M. Ann Block: www.blockcenter.com
She is an expert on non-drug treatments for ADD and has written a self-help book for parents. She is amazed at the number of parents that won't take the effort to try these things before going to the drugs. But, she will also look for gluten and dairy reactions as they are on the TOP of the list.

As time goes by, many of these psychiatric diagnoses are being found to be caused by physical issues, since our brains are not isolated from our babies (there;s a nerve in the gut that connects directly to the brain). Hopefully the DSM IV will go away - if not for our children, our grandchildren.

I learned all of this when I was trying to figure out what was going on with my son and decided that whatever he had, I had too. Then when I found out I had the genes and gluten sensitivity/celiac, I did more research and had both my boys tested.

Good luck.

Another Doctor is Dr. Dante Burgos (psychiatrist... they can prescribe meds, counsellors cannot) at the Holiner Group at Medical City Dallas.

As far as a counsellor, Dr. Denise Wooten in Lewisville is wonderful!

For Dyslexia testing, call Scottish Rite. It takes a bit to get in, but it is the best and it is free!

For counseling/meds for ADD, call Dr. Zielenski at ###-###-####. She is wonderful. I take both my kids to her. She has a private practice, so you never have to wait. She doesn't take insurance, but you can pay her and then file the insurance yourself. She also has a college who does dyslexia testing, too. She is in Grapevine, right near Ball and Wall Street across Highway 114.

Good Luck!

Go to Scottish Rite. We had same probs with our 9yro daughter. We went to Scottish Rite in January. I was fast it took them maybe a month,, to get our apt, get tested, and get results. Seriously I had bad experience with school district tests, cause they were not accurate. I just trusted someone who was not in the school district. And it was the best thing!!
