Seeking Crafts/activities for Fall Birthday Party

I am having a fall themed family party for my October birthday children, ages 10 and 5. There will be a range ages in kids there but mostly 5 and under. I was planning to make cider and chili and have a fire in our firepit and roast marshmellows- we've done mini pumpkin decorating at another party and I think apple dunking would be a bit too challenging for the young ones- any ideas for fun fall crafts or games for the kids? Oh and it would be great if they could be done outside as our house is on the small side. Thanks Mamas!

Hi!

Here are just a few more ideas.
* Fill up the wagon with some hay, and give the kids "hay rides" in front of the house.
*Have a scarecrow building contest. Just save a bunch of newspapers and have the kids work in teams to stuff some old clothes.
* What about , "Bozo-Buckets" line up several baskets and have the kids toss the tiny mini pumpkins.
*If you're looking for a craft, Oriental Trading sells small canvas bags, You could do apple printing &/or use leaf (fall themed) shaped cookie cutters dipped in paint to creat prints also.

** I hope you all have wonderful party!

I gather that since you said Fall not Halloween, that you're not looking to do halloweeny stuff. But with falling leaves and nuts and such, you could easily put together a cool scavenger hunt, and then maybe do some crafts using the leaves that you find? I don't know if you have girls or boys... my 5 year old is dying to make a "leaf crown" she saw in a book recently. There's a game called Squirrels in Trees that's a little bit like London Bridge. I don't remember the exact rules, but I'm sure you could search for it online. There's a website I've had great luck with in the past, something along the lines of birthdaypartyideas.com, that has tons of great ideas -- you could look there for more. Good luck!

Hi K.!
I read the posts and second the carmel apple idea, but check out familyfun website. They have a neat idea of making "mini" carmel apples by carving out small round apples out of one apple, inserting a candy/sucker stick and dipping it in melted carmel. You could put out a number of different "toppings" for the kids to dip, decorate and eat their creations! I have to also second the relay race or even an obstacle course. I usually get creative with my kids by using hula hoops to jump in, setting up a tunnel or sheet to crawl through and even using pool noodles between two lawn chairs as a hurdle for them to jump over/under. Good luck and hope the weather is good for the party!

Hi K.,

We have an October fest for the kids and hide pumpkins and do a pinata. We are adding a scavenger hunt this year and then we play guessing games - like how long is the rope, how many jelly beans in the jar, etc. For kids the old games like hot potato, pass the carrot, relay races things that keep them busy and laughing and smiling.

K. you don't say when in October but if you do Halloween decorations something I used to do with my daycare kids and still do with my grand kids is hand print ghost's and hand print bats. lots of fun and the kids love them

have the kids put their hands down on white construction paper. fingers spread wide for the ghosts. you draw around the whole hand don't go up the fingers. cut it out, turn it so the part that was the heel of the hand is at the top. put some eyes (you can draw or do the googly eyes you glue on) then either tape to window or hang by a string. the bats you use black construction paper. have the kids put both hands down on the paper thumbs together, fingers together but away from thumbs if that makes sense lol. the thumbs make the bats body you put the eyes up on that. the fingers are making the bats wings. they can decorate them with white crayons or glue on glitter etc. we hung those up. the kids love these 2 things and they can make a bunch to hang in windows, and across the room on fishing line. good luck and happy party.

Hi K.,

My son's birhtday is also in Oct. and we also live in a small home. I have had many at home parties for him, but the best one that most of the kids still talk about was in kindergarten. We took a bunch of larger sized cardboard boxes and taped them all together in the back yard to make a "city". Each child got to pick out their "house" and take markers and decorate it any way they wanted. They all LOVED IT! I bought each kid a $1 pack of markers, and let them take them home with their goody bag. We also did a prize walk where we took sidewalk chalk and made numbers on the driveway in a circle. We played music as they walked around the circle. When we stopped the music we called a number. Whoever was standing on that # got to pick a prize out of our prize bag (lots of little stuff from the dollar store, bouncy balls, stickers, etc.) We made sure that everyone ended up with a prize. I also make cupcakes, frosted them with differnt colored icing, and set out lots of little candies so that they could decorate them themselves (mini m&ms, skittles, sprinkles, etc) That was also a big hit for the younger and the older kids. All of this was done in the back yard. Hope everything goes well!!!

A friend of mine had a cute game sort of similar to bobbing for apples. She had doughnuts hang from strings on a dowel rod, and the kids had to bite them off without using thier hands. It was a lot of fun but messy. definetly an outdoor activity with lots of wipes to clean up faces.
The kids love it.

How about decorating your own candy apples? Get lots of different toppings and let them go to town. Sprinkles, nuts, chocolate shavings... the options are endless! Enjoy!

Buy a couple bags of bagels, yarn, PB and birdseed. Paper plates and brown bags work well for this project but you can use whatever is easy. Give each kid a paper plate with bagel and yarn have them tie a long strand around bagel. Coat with PB. Place one cup birdseed in bag. Put PB coated bagel in bag and shake. Each kid can take bag home as is. Remove from bag and hang on tree for bird feeder.

One other really fun and helpful thing the kids could do is bring a rake, or get a bunch of rakes and have the kids and /or adults make piles of leaves and let the kids jump in them as many times as they want to.
