Our good friends recently had their third baby (they already have one boy and one girl and the third is a boy). We want to give them and/or him something special. I'm starting to panic because he was born almost two months ago and we haven't gifted anything yet (except after they got home from the hospital I brought over breakfast foods and snacks for the family). Racking my brain for the kid the has everything - albeit hand-me-downs - but everything from clothes to toys. Any ideas?

So What Happened?

I loved many of your ideas! I appreciate you all taking the time to respond. I think I'm going to go with a gift card to a photography studio so that they can get a new family picture. Thanks again to everyone!

I second the personalized book or the handprint. I had all of my children's handprints done at the same time (1week) and it's so fun comparing them even to this day. Somehow, a personalized gift for the third child just makes it even more special (they seem to get all the hand-me-downs).

Just my $.02.

My thought is a giftcard to a photo studio for a new family portrait. The spa/babysitting is a great idea too.

when my 3rd was born i took my older children to build a bear so they could make her a bear. it was fun for the older kids so they didn't feel left out, the baby now 1yr loves it and the kids are so proud. They all have received bears at different times and now for special occasions we get them new clothes and accessories.
maybe you could take the older children to make a bear or give a gift certificate with the idea writen in a card.
this was so fun for our family

Good Morning W.!
First I want to say a very big congrats on being a SURVIVOR!!!!!
Im not sure if the new born take a bottle or just breast feeds, but there are a few things I thought of. If the baby will take a bottle, maybe get a gift card for dinner or a movie so they can take the olders ones and you can watch the baby. Or.... you can take the 2 older ones (if the baby is breastfed only) and spend a special day with them and give mama a break.
Money doesnt always have to be spent to show how much you care and want to help with your friends, yet with money being tight, little things may help a whole lot... it all depends on your and their situation...

Good Luck!! Have a good weekend!!

I recently had a baby boy and one of my favorite gifts received was a gift certificate to diapers.com. They sell everything on the sight (diapers, baby equipment and food, etc.) and have a great selection of green baby items. Shipping is free if you order $49 or more and my orders usually arrive in one day to my doorstep. Love it! Another item which is a bit more personalized is the custom baby hand and foot print plaques. There is a local lady that does the custom pieces which turn out wonderfully.

Diapers - they can be ordered from Costco or Diapers.com and delivered - very welcome surprise.

Meals - either homemade or ask if you can get take-out for them.

Pick up the two older children for a couple hours - momma will enjoy the 'quiet' time and the two children will enjoy a little extra attention.

The best gift I got for my 3rd baby was a homemade blanket. almost 3 yrs later he still carries it everywhere with him. Also, when I was a baby one of my Mom's friends made my brother and I Christmas stockings with our names on them. We still use them when we do holidays at my parents. They mean so much I had some embroidered ones done for my kids as well.

I like all the ideas already given here....especially the ones that give Mom a break.

Another suggestion would be to get a $50 EEE (educational savings bond) for the baby. You pay $25 and it will increase in value to $50 in ten years. Put the babies name on it, with one of the parents name as a cosigner. You can either use the babies social security number, yours, or one of the parents SSA numbers. When the bond is cashed it will be recorded under the child's SSA number. I've done this for a number of our friends kids and always ask others to do this for my kids. You can get the bonds at your bank.

Hi W.,

I don't think that the gift necessarily has to be "for the baby". I was in a similar situation, and my gift was a spa day for Mom, and I watched the kids while she went. Trust me, she will appreciate the break!

Hope this helps! I don't know what the abbreviations people use on here are but I'm a first time mommy to a beautiful 5 month old girl!

Hi,
I would recommend a really nice blanket or quilt. My first daughter was given loads of reallly nice hand made blankets and quilts (the sort of blanky you still have as a keep sake when you're older), but my second daughter wasn't given anything like this. I ended up going out and buying one for her myself so that she'd have something to hang on to as she gets older. Good luck, G..

DIAPERS! I know it doesn't sound "special" but what parent wouldn't be grateful for diapers? (Unless he's in cloth)?

Or, you could focus on the parents and give them a gift card for a place where they like to eat (or a few smaller gift cards for a few different places). Three kids and one a 2 month old? I bet anything that mom doesn't want to cook every night! The guys from my work all pitched in and did that for hubby and I and I will never forget it. I thought it was very thoughtful.

Something personalized that commemorates his birth is a perfect gift. CVS has little birth pillows where you can put in his name, DOB, etc. Or get one of those little kits that have plaster of paris to make his handprint in and a special box to save it. If you sew or embroider make something with his name on it. Another great gift is a gift certificate for a photo with a darling frame for the photo that is taken.

Meals, free babysitting~for all three kids, a helping hand in the house, laundry service, or a Starbucks gift card. I am the mother of three, and the third one is a huge adjustments, this was when all the plants in my house died, meals were mostly burnt to the pan and dinner was done with the smoke alarm went off LOL. I had everything I need for my third son since he was born only 14 months after my first son, our oldest is our only girl. And it just seemed to me that the first several months were the hardest to keep a schedule of any sort, and learn how to adjust to the new chaos in your house and some things suffered for that. So those are the kinds of things that I remember most; the friends that brought over meals with paper plates, or offered to water the drooping plants, fold a load of laundry while we visited over caffine products =} The little things that seem HUGE at the time, but really only take a few mins. Good luck with your friend and CONGRATS with being a survivor.

Hi W.,
www.iseeme.com has beautiful personalized books and other items for children. It is something the child can treasure forever and makes for a very unique gift. I suggest the book My Very Own Name which has animals that start with the same letter bring the letter page by page as it spells out the child's name. As the child grows, it helps him spell his name too. If you decide to order anything, you can use my free shipping code fsd12725 which lets them know I referred you and you'll receive free US standard shipping on your entire order. Let us know what you decide. :)K.

Hi W.,
Wow! Congratulations on your Survivor status!
Recently I was in your same position---stumped on what to give a mom who was having her 4th boy. So I went to purchase a Sears Smiles Savers card for portraits, then coupled it with a cute photo album, Carter's photo organization box, a piture frame in the nursery's theme, and a grandma picture brag book. It was the hit of the party and she has told me several times how cool the portrait savings card has been for her. Just anonther idea in addition to what you have already been given. Good luck

Hello, Can you sew? I like to make a quilt for each new baby. It is then personally their. Also, you can go to places which embroider or etch names onto gifts (cups, jewelry, blankets, quilts). These can be a little pricey, but very nice.
