Hi there, I am looking for some suggestions on some healthy snacks for my 2 boys. Unfortunately our 4 yr old does not like fruit. :( Does anyone have some other healthy snack ideas other than goldfish and pretzels? Thank you for taking time to read my request.

What can I do next?

We do Mozzerella cheese cut into squares and then put chow mein (hard dry noodles) in them for antenas and legs and raisins for eyes:-)

My daughter used to love honey nut cheerios and sometimes I would mix 1/3 cup cheerios with 2 Table spoons of raisins and she loved it. Peanut butter cracker were also a big hit. Hope this helps a bit.

my kids love to do the ants on a log. Celery with peanut butter and rasins. Also in the kraft food and family magazine this month they had a couple of cute ideas. One was to cut an apple in half and put strawberry cream cheese on it then dip it in fruity pebbles. My kids love to do that one. or cheese and crackers with juice. we sometimes make corn muffins from the jiffy box. trail mix is good too. good luck

how about homemade granola? old fashioned oats, nuts, wheat germ are mixed in with cinammon and nutmeg. then you melt butter, add honey, mix everything together and bake at 300 until golden on a baking sheet sprayed with pam. immediately put in airtight container and perhaps you can sneak in some dried fruit. it's great with milk, plain yogurt sweetened with honey or just plain.

canned tuna in olive oil put in the food processor with cream cheese, a bit of mayo, mustard and a garlic clove. this could be used as sandwich spread, for lettuce wraps, over healthy whole grain crackers or on celery sticks.

homemade hummus, made with chickpeas, olive oil, salt, fresh garlic, tahini and cilantro is another healthy dip alternative to the ranch dip!

roast/bake a variety of nuts with a mixture of melted butter, lea and perrins sauce on 300 degree oven til golden.

make quesadillas with trader joe's homemade tortillas, their 3-cheese mix and add healthy ham brand ham slices cut into strips.

english muffin half with canadian bacon round, cheese slice and tomato, grilled on a toaster oven.

DIY Ganola Bars:
Here is our Well Kiddos kid's recipe and how to:
http://www.wellkiddos.com/2012/02/14/diy-granola-bars-eas...
Enjoy :-)

And here are some more ideas:
What I consider when packing a snack:

When I pack snacks , I am often disturbed by the thought of where the waste will go, despite recycling and greener packaging, when refuse is tossed where is away actually?
To reduce garbage I use small kid size containers, BPA free, washable, easy to open and close, spill proof (please see coupon from Kids Konserve) ; I often reuse small glass jars.
A snack is nothing else then a small meal: veggies, fruit, cheese, yogurt, small sandwich, almond butter and bananas on whole grain bread (not whole wheat), lettuce leaves with guacamole as a dip are great and kid approved choices in my family.

Treats and “party foods” are not snacks: Cookies, pieces of cake, donuts, Nutella breads, graham crackers, fishies, fruit leathers and pretzels. These are “fillers” and not nutritiously valuable.
Foods with artificial colors and flavors and genetically modified ingredients are never seen in our food bags. Keep your snack choices free of artificial colors and flavors and genetically modified ingredients. If you are strapped for time, money and creativity here are a few quick ideas:

Bite sized homemade muffins (zucchini, pumpkin, banana)
Refillable water bottle
My little one loves olives and gherkin pickles.
Leftovers
Rice and beans
Sunflower seeds or pistachios
Fruit skewers
Homemade apple sauce (or organic store bought)
Banana slices with almond butter dollops
Cheese cubes
Hard boiled eggs
Hummus dip and tortillas/ whole grain bread cubes

Enjoy!!

Hi S.,

Do you feed your boys sweets (including sweet breakfast cereal? If yes, that is why your 4 year old won't eat fruit. If this is the case, I recommend changing their diet. They may not like it at first; but they'll eventually eat what you give them.

If you don't typically give them sweet foods, you can try hiding fruit in yogurt, oatmeal, or cereal. You can also try cooking (on the stove) or grilling the fruit, or blending it in a smoothie form.

Fruits and Veggies are ESSENTIAL to get your children to eat. I would make it "non-negotiable".

Some other snack choices:

•Shredded Carrots
•Sugar Snap Peas
•Grape Tomatoes
•Plain Organic Yogurt w/ Agave Nectar (can add granola and/or fruit)
•Apples or Celery dipped in Peanut Butter
•Organic Brow Rice Cakes w/ Almond butter and Honey or Agave Nectar (and a pinch of salt)
•Home-made Smoothie (you can sneak lots of things in a smoothie)
•Sweet Potato Fries (cooked in coconut oil or olive oil w/ a little salt & garlic)
•Shredded Zucchini w/ lemon juice, garlic, salt, & olive oil

Good Luck!
G.

So many answers are about sugary snacks-yoghurt covered raisins are almost all sugar! Try edamame in the shell -- we call them "poppers" because the kids can pop the beans out of the shell. Quesadilla's can be cut into little bites (try slipping a few spinach leaves in). If you can get them to expect some green in their food, they will become teenagers who'll eat some veggies.

Got these from a friend...

Banana bites:
1. slice a banana into one inch chunks
2. roll chunks in honey or I used Agave Nectar
3. roll coated chunks in wheat germ
Mack liked to eat these using a toothpick.

Mini-bagel sandwiches:
1. toast a mini-bagel
2. spread light coating of peanut or almond butter on each half
3. slice a granny smith apple so that it is in the shape of a circle - slices should be fairly thin
4. top with a slice of sharp cheddar cheese
5. put in toaster over or under broiler until cheese is melted and browned
As an extra flavor treat - spread a light coating of jelly with the peanut or almond butter before other toppings are added.

hi there,
i have a hard time getting my daughter to eat most veggies and she likes fruit but i have been hiding stuff in her muffins, i do buy the bag ones like martha white, but whole grain or try to make my own so i control thesugar etc but i use either baby food puree, or these fruitesi found that acutally have fruit and veggie puree together and i just hide it in the wildberry muffin mix or any muffin mix that is.. she had no idea she was eating spinich the other day and i ate some and they tasted like wildberry muffins!!! thats how i sneak stuff in :) hope this helps... ps i never liked fruit as a baby and still have to force myself to eat it.. but one way i do eat it is my sister takes berrys, grapes watermelon, strawberrys etc and pours fresca over them in a bowl and let it sit then when you eat it it tastes good you just scoop out the fruit when your ready, its even fizzy.... i love it!!!!!!!!!!!

My four-year old is also picky about fruits. Healthy snacks that she loves now and has loved in the past (changes all the time) include: hard-boiled eggs with the hard yolk pulled out, avocado, carrot sticks, yogurt, cheese (sticks, cut up, and even shredded and eaten with a spoon), cooked veggies (peas, broccoli, green beans), and edamame (she loves to push out the little soy beans).

i also have picky eaters. i have found that there are dozens of great snacks, we just have to have time to prepare them. organic yogurts are great, they even have squeezables. vegetables are also great, carrots, raisens, nuts, some dried fruits have sugar added so you could mix them in with nuts. organic cereals, popcorn, rice cakes, applesauce, cheese sticks, celery with peanut butter...
i have found with particularly my son, the more that i present the foods he doesn't like, the more he begins to like them. for instance, he can have his pizza for dinner if he eats the apple first...now he loves apples (specifically pink ladies)
i "hide" food in dips, (corn chips and salsa, corn chips and guacomole), smoothies always work. peanut butter covered apples. cut apples thin, place in frying pan with small bit of butter and cinnamin...go on line there's tons of ideas...
i think giving kids the option of eating something healthy or waiting for meals and not snacks can also work...
i also suggest that just because he doesn't like oranges one day, to try another day (sometimes the orange is sour or the strawberry is too tart) pick seasonal fruits and eat when they are completely ripe.

I don't know if this will work, but there are some snacks I got at COSTCO that where great. They were freeze dried fruit. So if your son doesn't like fruit becuase of the texture this may work. It was crunchy like potatoe chips but there were apples, peaches and pears. My kids love them. COSTCO also has "healhty handfuls" which are snacks. There are organic cookies, and cheese crackers in that one. Home made fruit juice popsicles a great during the summer. Kids love to dip things. Some carrots sticks, cucumber pieces, and other veggies with ranch or peanut butter may work.

Most 4 yr olds love the concept of "ants on a log". (Celery filled with nut butter...almond is my preference....with raisins lined across the top.

The 2 yr old I work with as a nanny loves "Mary's Gone Crackers" crackers that are full of nutrition, including Omega 3.

Apple siices with nut butter smeared on them, or used as "dips" is also one of his favorites. (Sometimes this is so "disguised" they dont realize it as the fruit they dont like.)

Hi S. B,

I suggest raisins or craisins. They seem like candy. I also just started buying the Kraft Cheese cubes. They are a great snack for everyone. I don't know if you have tried banana with peanut butter, but that may be a way to hide the fruit. My son also loves peanuts.

Good Luck!

There are many healthy snacks besides fruit. There here are two with peanut butter adn fruit/veggies. With the peanut butter and the fun "boy" name your kids may be more likely to eat them.

Bugs on a Toilet Seat
fresh/dry apple rings spread with peanut butter. Place bugs "raisens" on seat "apple ring"

Ants on a log
tender celery sticks filled with peanut butter. Place ants "raisens" on log "celery stick"

Hope your boys enjoy the fun.

We snack alot and we do it without high fructose or hydrogenated oils. In addition to fruits and veggies, there are a ton of "convenience" snacks like cookies and crackers that are better than the norm. I've even found a substitute for Cheetos that don't have artificial dyes and they're terrific. I list all of our favorites on my website RealKidFriendly.com in the Snacks section. Most are really good for on-the-road -- which is where we have many of our snack times.
Kashi has lots of good alternative snacks that my son loves.

Hi S. --

I would suggest that you switch you household over to a green, non-toxic and completely healthy household all the way by using a different kind of product line. I am involved with a company that manufactures everything other than fresh food and papergoods -- cereal, crackers, cookies, fiber snack bars, sport drinks, etc. -- all cleaning products that work and are safe for the boys and are less expensive -- personal care -- pharmacy -- supplement -- animal -- pest control -- you name it. Anyway, the boys will think that they are eating a candy bar and yet they will be eating 5 grams of fiber. You could make jello cups and have fiber in it and they would never know it and it wouldn't be just sugar calories. The stuff works like magic and no allergies and you will have the cleanest and whitest clothes in town with no bleach and it kills all the germs and dust mites. If you want to know more, then please call me at ###-###-#### or if you are a toll call 1-888-869-3236. My email address is ____@____.com M.

Goldfish now come in a whole grain one that tastes the same. At least you're not giving out candy & chocolate for a snack ; ) - ya know!

Go to the Deli and have them cut a slice of turkey or ham 3/8" thick, then you can cut it into strips, cookie cutter shapes etc.
Yogurt, cottage cheese
Have you tried the "Flat Earth" veggie chips?
Even my 5yr old still likes to snack on cold cereal like Life, or Multigrain cheerios.
My kids like canned green beans straight out of the can, as well as black beans or kidney beans rinsed and drained.
Maybe your kids will like to dip corn chips into mushed avocado, or warmed refried beans. You can also put grated cheese on them and microwave 30s or 'til melted.

Try a healthy recipe book for kids snack from the library. Making your own snacks is so much healthier than store bought. BTW, goldfish are not healthy. Read the box. It's all processed junk including enriched flour, partially hydroginated oils and high fructose corn syrup. Look for store bought snack WITHOUT those ingredients. Try Whole Foods. There is a new Whole Foods on Ray and 101.

I know this is going to sound crazy but here goes.... My kids loved (especially in the summer) frozen veggies. They liked to eat frozen corn, peas, and carrot squares still frozen. They thought that was the biggest treat. Also, when their mac and cheese was too hot I would put frozen peas in it to cool it off. Then they would eat the mac and cheese and the cheezy peas too! I had to get some nutritional value into mac and cheese :)
