Seeking Help with My Daughters Hair

Hello. My daughter is also bi-racial and all I use is Mouse when it is wet (and dont comb it dry) and it stays real calm. (we have also used gels) Her hair is super super curly. The only difference may be that I dont know the texture of your daughters hair. Some bi-racial children have nappy hair just as an african american and some bi-racial children have as straight hair as I have. So its hard for someone to tell you something that would work without knowing the texture. My daughter's hair is not nappy but my sons is. Usually if the hair is more course (nappy) there really is not much you can do other then braid it or keep it in a pony. GOOD LUCK!

R. i spoke with my friend whose daughter is caucasion and african american mixed as well. She told me that there probably will be no way you can expect your daughters' hair to be tame after she pulls her hat off. She said her daughters hair is never tame. She often braids it and/or puts it up and that is the only taming it will do. depending on your daughters hair, does she have the little geri-curls or like a medium curl? My friends daughter and son both have the little curls so she is constantly braid and/putting it up. Use conditioner in the bath and then use spray on, She also said that pomade works good for her daughters hair when its dried out. You can find that just about anywhere. Good luck!

My daughter is also half white and half African American, her hair is very curly (the large bouncy curls) and tangles easily, when it was longer we struggled to keep it from tangling, because she loved it down. Ran into the same problems you have right now. she swears by the products on here. I have been unable to get any of these as of yet so I don't know how they work, but for my daughter I use Vavoom's Glaze (salon purchase) and John Freida's Play Down ($5.00 Wal Mart). I use them together with her leave in conditioner (pantene for hydrating curls OR Pantene for women of color (great moisturizer!), (overkill I know) BUT the best part is it keeps her curls together without making them feel like she has product in her hair. That is important to me. My aunt owns a salon and says the sleek line of hair products is the best one to use, because it penetrates the hair and it is made specially for people that want tangle free, frizz free, either straight or curly hair, and it is made for the more coarse hair (I tried it but looked like I soaked my head in a vat of oil, yet my daughters hair just looks healthy) I wish you luck trying to find the best products that work with your daughters hair. I would stay away from the cheap hair lotions found at Wal Mart, they just dried out my daughters hair, and caused breakage. If you need more info feel free to contact me.

also, if you comb her hair when it's wet, it will go through easier, and will be easier on the both of you!

R., My daughter is caucasion but has REALLY long hair that tends to get pretty snarly after a good nights sleep or after washing-she has a fit when I try to brush it out. One thing that has helped me has been to use a wide tooth comb to comb in a lot of conditioner when I wash her hair. Another thing I did was to let her pick out a "special" brush so that it's something she picked and seems to not hurt as much-pretty much a mental thing there. And finally, I put her hair up almost all of the time. You can get little claw clips that will hold their hair in almost any kind of creation. I've been doing pig-tails then twisting them around and using the little clips to hold it in place, and believe me her hair isn't going to go anywhere with those clips in. I think this would work for your daughters hair too. I've also noticed that the older my daughter gets the more tolerant she is when it comes to brushing her hair-she doesn't make as much of a fuss as she did when she was younger-my guess is maybe their scalps are more sensitive when they are younger or perhaps their pain threshold increases as they get older-I know it takes a lot for a hair brushing to hurt me!
