Seeking Inexpensive Health Coverage for Family

My husband and I are in school, and student insurance doesn't cover much. We also want to have another little one in the next couple of years. Private insurance thru Lovelace and Presbyterian doesn't cover childbirth. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the ideas, I will look into UNMH for sure. My dh and I don't qualify for Medicaid (barely over the maximum for income), so that won't work, but you gave me some good ideas, thanks!!

Like the rest were saying, medicaid is good for pregnancy and childbirth. It'll also cover the children until they are 18 years old. If you need something for your husband as well, or for you after the baby is born, I would look into the "insurance" that UNMH offers. (Medicaid will only cover you up to two months after the baby is born... and it's only for pregnancy related things.) A friend of mine had appendicitis and had to go in for emergency surgery. After applying for the insurance and getting approved, she paid $25 for the surgery. She and her husband still have the insurance. There are no monthly fees and her office visits (for whatever) are only $5.

Hi my name is F. I am new. Me and my husband had the same problem. We both are in our Senior years in college and we wanted one more baby. I actually ended up getting pregnant before we got insurance and i ended up filing for Salud through lovelace because that is where i had my last child. It was very easy and everything is covered. Hope that helps. ihave a few numbers if you need them. My husband works also and we make good money but not enough to cover a baby for family of five on insurance.

If you're both students, look into Medicaid. You would probably qualify. And consider a homebirth, which you can save up for. It cost SO MUCH LESS to have a baby at home and it's way safer if you have no risk factors. Midwives are experts about normal births.

When my husband and I wanted to have a 2nd child we realized that his employer had a pregnancy clause in the insuranace they carried and I was forced to look elsewhere for insurance. I went through Cimmaron for private insurance because they did cover pregnancy and all prenatal care. I am not sure if it is still available...I think it cost about $120 a month, and that was 4 years ago...hope that helps.
