I was wondering if anyone knows how to get started doing medical transcribing from home. I have knowledge of medical coding and abreviations. I can type fast. I thought it would be a great way to stay home with my kids and still have money coming in without having to sell anything. Any advice?

What can I do next?

Lucky for you, there is a site that you can check out with over 100s of transcripton services that are looking for work-at-home transcriptionists. I'm 25 yrs old with 2 children and one on the way. I've been doing medical transcription for about five to six years now, and I've been working from home for about a year and a half now. Let me tell it's very convenient except for that darn refrigerator. HaHa! Go ahead and check it out and do some research. Some don't need experience and some do. Some also do testing. You can also make as much income as you want. It all depends on your productivity. It's a money maker I'll tell you that much. Good luck!!

Hi M.,

I'm new to the board, but I have about 9 years experience as a medical transcriptionist. I have worked both on site, as well as at home. Personally, I did go to college for medical transcription, but I know of many people who were given the opportunity without schooling. It is rare for a doctor to give an inexperienced transcription an opportunity but it has been done.

Just last week, I left my part-time at-home medical transcription job due to inability to spend enough time with my young children. It does seem very simple to be able to work at home with children (even though some do), but medical transcription does require 120% of your attention. It is very true what one of the other moms said: it is more than simple typing and there are liabilities with the work. At a previous employment, one of my co-worker was fired and sued for a simple ommission: "not". Due to this error on her part, the patient died and the hospital was sued.

Either way, I would recommend you to a Round Rock company, Medical Transcription Services, off I-35/Sam Bass. I have met the owner, and he is very sweet. You receive training at their location, and after graduating, if you had good grades, they will hire you to work from home.

I wish you luck :) As a mother, I definitely understand your situation and know that you want the best for your kids. Hopefully, you can find the training and/or opportunity to give you the first step up.

BTW, have you considered coding from home?

R.

I DON'T KNOW ALOT ABOUT STAYING AT HOME TO DO THIS, BUT I AM IN TH MEDICAL FIELD. THE ONE THING I DO KNOW IS MAKE SURE THE PERSON YOU WORK FOR HAS INSURANCE TO COVER YOU IN CASE OF LAW SUITES. IF SOMETHNG IS MISS TYPED AND NOT CAUGHT BY THE DR. THE WRONG TREATMENT COULD BE GIVEN AND THE BALL HAS THEN STARTED ROLLING.DR ARE VERY HARD TO UNDERSTAND SOMETIMES. I WORK WITH EIGHT RADIOLOGIST THAT I HAVE TO QUESTION ALL THE TIME ON DICTATION. I THINK IT IS GREAT YOU WANT TO STAY HOME WITH YOUR KIDS, JUST COVER YOURSELF ALSO.

I to have thought about going this route but just have not done it yet. My mother on the other had has. She just completed the course and is waiting for her certificate. She said she really enjoyed the course and is looking forward to making extra money and possibly being able to retire early if things go well. The course she took was from U.S. Career Institute out of Fort Collins, CO. Good luck and hope this helps.

I am going to school right now to be a medical transcriptionist. My mom has a good friend that does it and she has 3 small children. She works from home and got that job right out of school. Understanding the doctors is the hardest part!!! Other than that she works full time and still takes care of her children at home. She gets up at 4am works for 4 hours get her kids up and then works 4 more hours in the afternoon.

I did medical transcribing for three years to put myself through school and it requires more than the ability to type fast and the knowledge of medical coding. There are very confusing terms (to a novice) that are used by doctors and accuracy is crucial as your employer would not want to submit inaccurate or sub-perfect documents to their providers.

I would check on monster.com and other employer-posting websites for a potential place looking for people to transcribe from home.

However, keep in mind that most require experience and the purchase or rental of a home machine with which you can (via your phone line) upload your work for the day.
