An MP4 player might be a better alternative. Or you could get one of the ones for a car that has the screen separate from the player. Then you could just give him the screen and keep the player part on the table with you.
I need to take my two-year-old to my next dr appt and am looking for a portable DVD player for him to watch while I'm being examined that doesn't have controls for him to mess with. Does any product like that even exist? If not, can you recommend an alternative? Thanks!

i have a sony portable dvd player... it runs on the car battery and has a battery you can charge too.
it has the button lock feature and it is really awesome.
my daughter loves it. i got it at conn's.
hope this helps!
Don't know about the DVD player, but my two year old loved his giant sticker book in the car this summer for our two very long road trips. First he sticks the stickers in (all random and crazy) then he pulls them all off and makes a huge pile of sticky, torn stickers. Quiet and lasts at least as long as a pelvic exam! :)
Congrats on #2...and enjoy these last months with just one to hang out with! Life will never be the same again, but that's mostly the point with kids, isn't it?

check out the Disney DVD players at Target.
I don't own one of them but being from Disney they seem geared to kids.( I don't know it they are just for the car though-I don't know if they run on a battery power or car charger.)
Make sure you get one that can plug into a wall outlet and not just a car lighter since you want to use it out of the car.
when my daughter was little we had a portable dvd player that had a small switch on the side that would lock the controls. she could press them all she wanted and nothing would happen. i haven't looked at them in awhile but i bet you can find one with that feature.
You might want to try the video now. They also have a video noe jr. It only has the four basic controls but it made for kids to use. The only complaint is the one that we bought on super sale quite working after a couple of months, but I would buy him another one because its price is reasonable for a kid and it helps for these situations. If you can buy the power cable as it eats batteries. Good luck.
Hi Sam,
Get your son a leap frog leapster game. It looks just like the hand held video game Gameboys, but you buy little cartridges that have actual learning games. Most of the games have characters they enjoy. I bought this for my kids when they were around 4 and 5 and my daughter is now 9 and still loves it! It captures their attention and it would be great for car rides too. If you buy the rechargable batteries, you will have no problem in keeping it going and going:)
Good luck and Congrats!
My hubby is a gadget guy, and we got a great deal on a Zune. It's a mini TV that you can load your favorite DVD's on. He later sold it and traded up for a great deal on a refurbished iPOD. My daughter(s) love it, because it's very small, the picture is crystal clear, and we can put a -bunch- of their favorite DVD's on it. (oh, yeah. . . a fully charged one will last through I think 5 hours of movies.) I like the iPOD better because it's much smaller, you can get a protective case/lanyard (necklace) for it, and because there are no moving parts, it won't break if they accidentally drop it. Both the Zune and the iPOD have a switch on the bottom to turn the controls off.
Another recommendation: at Target, I found some earphones just for kids. They're smaller, so they fit their heads better, and they are also made so that the volume is much lower and won't hurt their little eardrums. They have black ones online, but I picked up some pink ones in-store. My girls LOVE them!! http://www.target.com/Kids-Sony-Headphones-Black-MDR-222K...
Good luck!

why don't you get a little learning (ABC-123) toy instead ,or one of those books with the buttons to the side? Wouldn't that be better? How long does it take at your dr?
