Seeking Local OBGYN in Beaverton or Surrounding Areas

I just found out I'm pregnant with my third. I am 5 weeks along already! I have an appointment with my family practitioner next week and I'll ask her for some recommendations as well.

I am looking for a doctor who is a little more personal, not just at the routine visits, but during labor as well. When I had my second child, my doctor was on a rotation where he was only on call one night a week, and it just so happened, I did not give birth on his night :( I had a random doctor deliver my baby.

I also didn't care for Providence St. Vincents Hospital, as it was nothing compared the hospital I birthed my first at (in Eastern WA), so any suggestions on hospitals/centers in the area here would be wonderful and greatly appreciated.

I am entertaining the idea of a natural childbirth, but not sure I'll make it all the way to the end, so I have no idea if a birthing center is the right way to go (do they allow medications??).

Thanks all!

What can I do next?

You are certain to get TONS of responses, but I also live in Beaverton and I went to an ob over by Good Sam (I had no heard wonderful things about St V's). Her name is Jenna Murray. I actually went to 3 other ob's and midwives before finding her (in my 20th!!! week). She is attentive, personal, and VERY open to however you want to deliver! She is also in a practice and "in theory" it's whoever is on call, but she doesn't go for that and as long as she is in town (she is rarely OUT of town, but there had to be that caveat just in case) SHE will deliver your baby. Yes, that means that sometimes you might get bumped to another dr at a checkup if she has to go to a delivery, but that only happened to me once, and to have a familiar face "down there" on the big day was certainly worth it!
Congratulations and GOOD LUCK!
(Oh, and by the way, the rooms at Good Sam are VERY nice, and everyone gets the option of laborin gin the tub as long as you want - you just can't deliver in the tub, so you have to get out to push. I thought it was a nice compromise, but I ended up getting an epidural halfway through - AND LOVED IT!)

Congratulations! I am almost 11 weeks with my 3rd and I had to find an OBGYN recently. Since my primary care is in the Tuality system and I have been happy with them, I went to Tuality OBGYN in Hillsboro on 8th street and I am seeing Dr. Bennett, but I've heard great things about the other docs there too. I'm not entirely sure how the process works as far as "rotation" goes... you could call the office and ask, but they have been great there so far and very relaxed and accomodating. They also are right next door to the hospital, which makes me feel good since both of my other babies were born before the doctor could get to the hospital... in the event I'm laboring during the day, all she has to do is walk next door and she'll be there. It's also all women doctors as far as I know, so that was a good thing for me.

Their number is ###-###-####.

Oh, AND, if your insurance covers you at Tuality Hospital, it's an AWESOME place to deliver because their delivery rooms are "birthing suites" with tubs, a bed for dad, DVD players and even room service, where they will bring food off of a specialized menu anytime you want it. My favorite thing is that they are labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum rooms, so you stay in that room the entire time at the hospital, from arrival to departure. I'm looking forward to it as though it was a vacation!!

Good luck finding a doctor that works for you!

I highly recommend the midwifery clinic at OHSU. I had both my girls delivered at OHSU, with midwives in attendance at all times. They work with doctors, keeping the doctors on rotation abreast of how labor is progressing and all the various details. They have a water birthing "pool" and are incredibly supportive. I, too, wanted to have as natural a labor and delivery as possible, keeping my options open at the same time. They were amazing and they made ME feel amazing through the entire process. They were also super supportive of my husband. Like another gal who responded, I ended up with c-sections for both girls, although for different reasons and not for lack of trying all other options!

I never felt pressured to get pain medication or to abstain from it. It's all about the mom there.

I had a doula the first time around- it was great. The second time around I didn't have one, but they happened to have a volunteer doula on call, which I ended up requesting because I was having a more difficult time handling the pain with number 2.

Oh, another thing. The zillions of appointments leading up to delivery were such a joy! The midwifes took their time and I never felt rushed. They were focused on me, my questions, etc. and took ALL the time that I needed. An average appointment would last at least 45 minutes. It was great.

Good luck!

If you have any questions about OHSU, let me know!

dr. michael davis is the sweetest, warmest obgyn i've ever met. he delivered my twins (also my third pregnancy!) and i wish he would have been able to deliver my first two. he's really a cheerleader for you...stays positive every step of the way. i absolutely did not want a c-section and he really worked to give me that. before the delivery, he sat down with me and we went over all the chances a c-section would come up and explained the options and listened to me. i loved that. plus, he's pretty young (late 30's?) so i feel he's open to new medical info. he has an office on nw lovejoy across from good sam and he has an office on scholls ferry.

one thing he is "old school" about is his deliveries. if you are his patient, he will deliver your baby. the only time he has another doctor on call is when he's on vacation. if you go to meet him, ask him if he'll be taking it near your due date.

i know you said you didn't like st. vincent's but he does deliver there, as well as good sam, because that's where i had the twins. good luck and congratulations!

Wow, I am really surprised about hearing that so many people don't like St. V's. I had both my kids there - 1st with a midwife and 2nd with a doc (I prefer midwives) - and LOVED it. I enjoyed it so much that I got a job with them! LOL

My son (#1) ended up with pneumonia being diagnosed on the day of discharge and they immediately moved him to the NICU and put me up in a parent room right next door to the NICU. He was just barely term, perhaps even a tad early. They were all amazing. My daughter (#2) went just as smooth even though she tried to come out upside down (face up), the did all they could to avoid a C-section which was extremely important for me. They also kept me from ripping both times! Both my labors, start to finish, were 5 hours and I think it not only had to do with genetics, but the fact that I was so relaxed and well cared for. On top of the hospital staff and husband, I had my grandma who is a labor and delivery nurse. Maybe you can get a doula or midwife on top of the doctor or even a best friend to look out for you and make sure they do what you want...daddy's are usually a little busy worrying...

I had a friend that went to Tuality with her 1st and had horrible experience. They were very rude to her during delivery and wouldn't let her out of bed to walk around at all. And didn't break her water until it was time to push, which probably lengthened her labor by 8 hours minimum (according to her current doc - her 2nd will arrive any day now). She was in labor for 14 hours at the hospital, 5 before going in. Plus about a week later when she went back hemorrhaging and with a very high fever, it took Tuality 3 hours to see her (found out a piece of the placenta was left behind and was causing an infection).

Hope you find a doctor/midwife you are comfortable with. Ask about tours of birthing suites/facilities, they might let you and you can really find something you like.

Congratulations!!! And good luck!!!

I loved the women's group at Good Sam (Legacy system). It's all women and they are all very nice. My main ob was Dr. Levanda, but Dr. Hulton delivered my first daughter. Both very personal, very nice. And Good Sam has got to be the nicest as far as birthing hospitals go. You stay in the same room the entire time- before, during, and after- and it's super big, nice wood floors, jet tubs, all you need. They look like super nice hotel rooms. My second daughter was delivered at Legacy Emanuel downtown- not as nice. Had to change rooms and the postpartum room was super small. Not easy having older children visit! (We had to have a high risk doc for #2, that's why the change of doctors and hospitals). I would definitely love to go to Good Sam again if I could!! Good luck!

I can recommend a great OB-Dr. Michael Davis. He is very personable and a great dr. to have around during delivery. He delivered my child, my nephew, my niece and two friends children as well. All deliveries are different and each one of these moms said he was wonderful. He works at the Northwest women's clinic which is by Legacy Good Samaritan, but also has an office on Scholl's ferry road in Beaverton.

Legacy Good Samaritan is also a great hospital for delivering your baby. We had an excellent experience there and will be returning to have our next child.

Hi A.,
Congrats on your new little one! I deliverd both of my babies at Miridian Park in Tualatin. I had really good experiences both times, the nurses were awesome, they waited on me hand and foot. Also you stay in the large birthing suite the entire time.....I had to unfortunatly have a c-section both times, so my stays were 4 days the first time and 5 days the second. I have had lots of friends and family deliver at StV's and I have always been turned off....NO THANK YOU. Meridian Park is smaller and much more personal....I have also heard good things about Tuality...in Hillsboro. The womens clinic there is great too, Dr. LIsa Pew or Dr Drea Olmstead is who I would suggest. They are both great, they are partners and you can get to know both of them. Good luck!

If you're willing to travel to NW Portland, I highly recommend Dr. Jenna Murray ###-###-####. Her office is in the Legacy Good Sam Hospital complex, and that's also where her patients deliver. I absolutely adore her, she is very patient and attentive (as are the other OB-GYNs in the practice), and respects your birth plan choices. You will never feel like she is rushing you out the door, nor will you ever feel like she is telling you just what you want to hear. She is honest, kind and experienced, all the things you want in an OB-GYN.
I knew I wanted a natural birth, and though preg. induced high blood pressure forced me to have an induction, she knew my birth plan and encouraged me to follow it. Dr. Murray will really make you feel like you are a partner in your health care.
BTW, the entire office is just as caring and nice. Nurses and receptionists get to know you, and ask about your kids when you come in. If you call with a question or concern, a nurse or nurse-practioner get back to you right away. It's such a nice atmosophere, I actually look forward to visiting once a year for my annual exam!
