Hi Everyone,
My husband and I have been unhappy for quite a while. We argue about all the usual things - money, parenting, sex.... I'm trying to find a good marriage counselor. Any suggestions? We have Anthem Blue Cross insurance and live in Sacramento near Watt and I-50. I'd like to find someone close by who accepts our insurance. We tried going once before, but were a bit discouraged when the counselor we saw was really weird and unprofessional. We really need to try again. I'd rather not be a single mom. Ugh. Thanks!

Hi E.,
My husband and I are going through the same right now so I understand where you are coming from. I contacted my insurance and got a list from them of counselors that take our insurance. Then I set up a couple of appointments. It took us three people before we found someone that we could both work with. I highly suggest you look for someone until it feels right. Good luck to you, I truly feel for you.
I recommend Anita Coley. She is located on Capitol Ave. between 25th and 26th (I think). She is a wonderful counselor and a nice person. We have seen her before with great success.

E.,
Counselors are like shoes. You need to try them on before you buy. As you go forward, I suggest that you ask for a screening session where you and your husband both determine whether or not you feel comfortable with the counselor.
Don't feel that you need to form a partnership, and I use that word purposely, with the first person you find. Sometimes that works, but often it doesn't. You are looking for someone who is going to work closely with you as a couple to help you create the marriage that you dreamed about when you first made a commitment to each other.
Just as you wouldn't buy shoes that don't fit, don't "buy" into the unstated myth that you have to have a second appointment with a counselor who doesn't feel comfortable to you both.
If insurance isn't an issue, then I would also suggest relationship coaching, which take a little bit different approach than counseling and is for most people, very effective. Coaching is done over the telephone. If you decide to go that route, please feel free to call ###-###-####)my office. I have a wonderful coach to whom I refer my clients. Every person who has been referred to him has always returned saying it was the best decision they have ever made.
