My midwife was WONDERFUL - she got me through 2 terribly complex pregnancies that could have resulted in the death of my child - with no problems - one was, I had no "water in the Pond" and the other, had the umbilical chord around her neck - and both children were fine when they were born, in spite of what could have been terrible consequence due to no fault of the doctor.

Dr. Lisa Easton-Hummel (midwife). She is located in Edmonds, at the Professional Center, across from Stevens Hospital - you will have to look her up.

After some search we used Seattle Natural Family Medicine http://www.snfm.net/index.html and were very pleased. My husband was part of it all, Tracy is great and there is always time to ask questions. I loved it there. I suggest you meet with few midwifes and see who suits you best. The time spent is well worth it. I called few places first, and based on how I was treated and felt about the place I scheduled few appointments. Hope this helps.

M. - I had the most wonderful experience of my three deliveries with Expecting the Best Midwifery (Michelle Sarju and Tracey Cooper) delivering at the Puget Sound Birth Center in Kirkland. Unfortunately they are on a "hiatus" of sorts right now because Tracey just had a baby, but Sunita Iyer is the woman who was actually in charge of my delivery as a student working with Michelle and Traceyat the time. She did beautifully, even with a complication I had after delivery. She is now done with school and practicing, and I would completely trust her to deliver me again. You can find her with the Lake Washington midwives http://www.birthcenter.com/about_lake.htm

Read up on relaxation, water therapy, deep breathing, etc. Having a calm, quiet, beautiful birth is aided by a midwife, but the responsibility of setting the tone is still up to you!

Blessings!

There are so many! Depends on what exactly you're looking for..let me know more details if you have time. The birthcenters I recommend are Puget Sound Birth Center and Seattle Home Maternity. They both also offer home birth services but that way you have both as an option.

If you want a home birth with someone who can transfer you to a hospital call Sally Avenson ARNP CNM or Cynthia Brown CNM. If you're looking for a Christian midwife try Suzanne Thomson LM. For other home birth options or with some privileges at the birth centers, you can also call Geraldine Lee and Beth Coyote at Rainy City Midwifery.

I know that gives you a lot of options, but they all have websites, just google the names. There you can see pictures, read bios, philosophies, and testimonials. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about these referrals, so glad you're pursuing a natural birthing experience!

My first child was delivered at Swedish and I didn't really like it there. Swedish Ballard is better, and a lot of people like Group Health Hospital. My OB at Swedish was Karen Judge, and she was great, I just didn't like the hospital. I loved Providence Everett however, but that may be too far. My OB at the Everett Clinic in Mill Creek was Laurent Nicolov and he was fantastic!!

Can't help you with OBGYNs as I'm looking for one myself but there is a great guide available online that I used to help me navigate my birthing options. It gives very valuable information about hospitals, midwives, etc:

Good luck!

Another recommendation for Sally. We just had our birth with her at Group Health and she was still able to take care of everything even though my pregnancy became high risk in the last month or so. She was wonderful.

I second the vote for Sally Avenson - Midwife. She is the most amazing woman you will ever meet. I met her 12 years ago when she was my midwife for my 1st child and again with my 2nd. All my friends have used her and she will be the best resource for pregnancy you could ever imagine.

I had my first child through an OB who delivered at Swedish Ballard and although I didn't care for the OB experience, I LOVED delivering at Swedish Ballard! Very calm environment, you stay in the same room the entire time, and they are very open to mom's desires.

For my second child (due any second), I decided that the OB experience was a no-go and I've been using the Swedish Midwifery clinic. You see the midwives in rotation and they're all different in their own way, but very cool. My appointments at the OBs were 10 minutes-- with the midwife, they actually take their time to talk to you, answer questions, address concerns. I've had several appoinments where I talked with the midwife about general pregnancy issues for 30 minutes or more!! Last week, my appointment was 40 minutes long because the midwife I saw spent a lot of time helping me with ideas for getting my two year old ready to be a big-sister. It was great.

I'm excited to have the opportunity to deliver at Swedish Ballard again and have really enjoyed my experience with the midwives.

Best wishes for whatever route you choose!

I would check out puget sound midwives and birthcenter www.birthcenter.com. I used their kirkland locaition but I think they also have access to hospitals and birthcenters in seattle proper. They do home births too. Valerie Sasson was my midwife -- she was AMAZING.

I highly recommend Sally Avenson, CNM, ARNP. She has been a midwife for over 30 years. She also teaches at the UW midwifery program. She does hospital, birthing center & home births. She is in private practice & her office is located in Wallingford. If you prefer more formal setting you can see her at her Greenwood office. You can reach her at ###-###-####.

I wholeheartedly recommend the midwives at the Puget Sound Birth Center. We had Ali Tromblay deliver our first born son at our home in Kirkland, and it went spectacularly well. They offer free consultations, so I'd highly recommend checking them out. If you have any specific questions about having a home birth, I'd be happy to talk further. Additionally, I would recommend the birth classes through the Birth Zone. Liz Chambers teaches the classes geared towards those who are doing natural births. Good luck!
