My son was on 2% but found out that he would have constant diarhea trying to break the milk down in his system. We put him on Vitamin a&d. That has the most nutrients for a growing babe. J.
my son just turned a year old, and he started drinking regular milk a couple weeks ago. i have asked so many people this question, what kind of milk should i give him? i was told to use every kind of milk out there. i have him on skim and vitamin d ( i have to switch depending on what i can afford), even his doctors nurse said 2% but his doctor didnt say anything when i told him skim milk. anyone have any advice on whats best for him while hes developing still? thank you.

Hi A.,
I am a mom to 4 kids ages 15, 12, 3, and almost one. I was always informed that they needed to be on whole milk untill 2. They still have a high fat content need. if you can't really afford milk you should look into getting one WIC. they give you free milk, cereal, peanutbutter, eggs and juice. check out your local public aid office. it really helps out when you are a single mom.

Whole milk is the best because it contains the highest amount of fat. The brain is growing rapidly at this age and requires lots of fat to provide nutrients to the brain. If you are unable to provide a milk that contains high fat you need to find other healthy foods that will provide the nutrients the brain needs. I would talk to your doctor to get more advice on the milk or other foods.

At this age children really need the fats in Vitamin D milk for proper brain development. Additionally the higher levels of protein are needed for bone and teeth development. I hope this helps...two pediatricans and many books have made these recommendations. Good Luck!

When babies start drinking milk, they should drink whole milk (vitamin d) because they need the fat to help them develop. Your doctor and nurse should have told you that, unless thats not the case any more, but my son is only two and thats what I've been told since my first child started regular milk 15 years ago. Also, now that your child is eating table food, he shouldn't need large quanities of milk anyway. I wouldn't recommed putting milk in a bottle. As a matter of fact, now is a good time to ditch the bottle completly if you haven't already. Also, another good resource would be your local WIC Office. There are nutritionists on staff who can help you learn your childs needs.
I was told by our dr Vitamin D which is also Whole Milk. But after a couple months I'm guilty of switching to 2% since thats what we drink and it was cheaper *blush*
I gave mine either whole or 2%. Honestly, most pastuerized milk isn't a very good source of calcium anyway and all milk is the same amount of calcium. The thing that differs is the amount of fat in the milk. That's pretty much it. So it is up to you.
Good luck!
Hi A.-My daughter also just turned 1. My doctor and everything I read says whole milk (Vitamin D) as it's high in all the nutrition they need that they are not getting in the formula anymore. Skim milk should probably be your last resort. It's "skimmed" of the fats and broken down so it doesn't have as many nutrients in it. 2% would be the next best if money is an issue.
I was told to give Whole Milk(vitamin D) when they first switch. It had something to do with the amount of bacteria it contains or something like that. Whole milk is more complete/pure. I don't really know for sure but I know I give my daughter whole milk. Also, I am not sure if it matters so much if your son can handle it without getting sick. I know some babies get irritated bellies from milk other than whole. Good luck.
I am a 3rd semester nursing student, we learned that whole milk is best for a child up to 1 year for best brain development. Since your son is now over a year old whole milk isn't as important. It has high fat content. My son is almost 6, but since about the age of 2 he has been drinking skim. That is what I drink and 1 it is cheeper and two it has the same nutrional value of 2%. I hope that helps a little bit.
I have 3 children ages 12,10, and 9. I have given them whole milk at age 1. but that was 12 years ago and new studies have been shown that either 1%,2% or whole are just fine. We are talking about the fat in each type of milk. If you are to give 1% I would suggest a vitimin as well, now they thing is the vitimins are costly so, in the long run, whole would be best.
Goos Luck!
The best Milk for a one year old is whole. If you can't afford it then 2% is the next best. They need the extra fat that is in whole milk to help their bodies produce many different things. Any more questions don't hesitate to ask. I went to school for nursing before I decided to change my major completely.
Have a great day

Well I am A. my best be is to tell you, you should use whole milk..everbody knows that..I say this because whole give your child every nutrition it needs..It makes them stronger and more fuller in the body..and if it gets to thick sometimes try to use a cup of apple juice..need anything else feel free to ask..D. Hi - generally when a child turns one they are given whole milk (vitamin D). The fat in the milk is vital to their developing brains. However, if your pediatrician has concerns over your son's weight then you can give 2% or 1%. I would avoid skim for your child. At age 2 a child the healthiest choice is skim or 1%. Again, if your pediatrician thinks your son is underweight or overweight he/she may suggest something else. Have you tried Aldi's? Generally, their prices are lower for milk products. A great parent resource in Milwaukee is www.milwaukeemoms.com
Hope this helps!
I've always heard that you should give 1 year olds whole milk because it has the highest fat content, which is necessary for brain development. Our oldest drank whole milk that entire second year. I was told at my youngest son's 18 mo checkup that because he is developing well and has great height and weight, that we could switch him to whatever the family drinks. I drink skim, but we have 2% for everyone else. Good luck!
