Hi moms,
My right breast nipple feels warm and tender i'm also getting discharge. It's not bloody but it's white and a tint of green. I went to the doctor and I have an appoinment to get a mammogram next month. My son is a year old I was wondering if that was milk still comming out and I only breast feed for a week cause he didn't like it. The doctor also mentioned about galactorrhea is this common after giving birth after a year.

What can I do next?

C.,

I had very similar situation. Although mine occured 8 YEARS after my child was born! I started having a greenish discharge from the left nipple. Sometimes it was spontaneous and i would find it on my bras. The docs at the time took smears of it, biopsies, you name it. The tests were always inconclusive. Mammograms every 3months and so on. After 9 months of all this I was referred to a surgeon, because they had been watch a milk duct that was "lighting" up on the mammograms. I guess the next mamogram showed 2 ducts lighting up. The surgeon told me he was 98% sure it was nothing serious, but nonetheless, recommened surgery. I had 4 milk ducts removed during that surgery, one contained a lump that was oozing this green discharge and they assumed it must have traveled into the other ducts. They said it wouldn't come back and the likelihood of it going to the other side, was very slim.
Well, less than a year later, there I was again, this stuff oozing from the RIGHT side now. I skipped the other guys and went right to the surgeon and had him take a biopsy. This time, he called me back and said it showed some "A-Typical" cells and he was recomending surgery the following week. He took all the ducts in the right breast this time as a precaution. The pathology showed these cells as well, and from my understanding, if left untreated could have developed into cancer. I am happy to say now, that I am green discharge free! It's been 7 yrs now. I still get diagnostic mamorgram every year to play it safe.
I would see your doc about it right away. You could have an infection since it's so close to your nursing and with the warmth of course. Better safe than sorry.

Good Luck,
J.

C., some discharge is completely normal after giving birth and breastfeeding eve for a year. However, You should definitely get it checked out. Ask your doctor to order a diagnostic vs screening mammogram and try to get it scheduled earlier. It could be nothing or it could be an infection (which is common after having babies)sometimes its because of your hormones trying to get back to normal. I actually work for a Breast Specialist in the northwest suburbs. Let me know if you need further help or have more questions.

I do not have the exact same as you but after breastfeeding I still had what looked like breast milk for almost a year after seep out if I slept on my tummy and I would wake up with a wet shirt and other times for just no reason at all. I never did bring it up to my Dr since we were dealing with more serious problems again and that was the last thing on my mind so I have no clue as to what it really was. It FINALLY has gone away though (I hope for good)!

As for the greenish tinge- my Aunt had that. Definately go for your mammogram to rule out more serious problems!

Good luck and blessings to you and yours!

This happened to me and the OBGYN sent me for a cat scan. Her concern was a brain tumor. It turned out negative.

It could be anything so please don't be frightened by the answers you may get, just cover all the bases in getting things checked out.

My youngest is 5 so imagine my surprise when I was secreting milk. I knew I was not pregnant but took a test anyway. It was negative. I saw my obgyn who took blood tests after witnessing it. My prolactin levels were off the charts. I had a head mri to see if my putitary glan had a tumor. It did! I was referred to a glan specialist who said my currant medication was contributing to the secretion. So I switched meds, stopped producing milk, had another mri and still have a tumor. Every 6 months I have to have a head mri to watch the tumor and blood tests. I wish you the best. Good luck!
