Seeking Movie with Nothing "Scary"

Please don't take this as being harsh, but you need to introduce different types of conflict to her so she can learn how to deal with them. If you never let her experience these feelings and emotions, she won't know how to handle situations and she will either shut down or freak out. The nice things about movies is that you can pause them when something happens that upsets her and talk about it. She is old enough to listen to reason and understand how and why things happen. She is going to have a hard time growing up if you shelter her from everything, especially from kids movies that are geared to helping little ones deal with problems and finding peace in life.

My son used to get scared from the baby einstein movies that have the dragon in it that roars. I would not shelter your child from childrens movies. I would let her watch one and watch it with her. If there is something that scares her I would explain to her that whatever this thing is it isn't bad and just explain what is going on. You can't shelter your daughter from everything. I explained to my son that the dragon in the movie wasn't bad and it was just making noise.

This is interesting...can't say I've heard of a child having this sort reaction to movies. You might be in a pickle here cuz by 5, most kids watch full-length feature movies. By 5 our son (now 6.5yrs) was bored with & had out-grown Sesame Street. Veggie Tales might be good cuz they have a good moral to them but there usually is some form of problem. Scholastic Books puts out some DVD's that are good. They're just stories set to cartoons. My son loved 'Chicka Chicka Boom Boom' which is a really popular kids alphabet book/song. The DVD has 4 or 5 other Scholastic Books stories set to cartoons & are very non-confrontational. I really enjoyed them myself & was bummed when our older son didn't like them anymore. I am waiting for our 2 year old to show interest so I can watch them again! The only place I've ever seen them are Ross & Marshall's so not sure if Blockbuster, Net Flix or other video stores will have them. Even tho the teacher will try to 'rig' the vote, the other kids may not like the choice & could get bored & restless so the teacher may end up putting on something else to watch. Having 15 restless & bored 5 year olds isn't always a good thing! Kids pick up & learn so much from their peers so you never know, your daughter could see how the other kids react to the movie & just go w/the flow. Good luck!

The Strawberry shortcake movies are very light hearted. Lots of singing and pretty scenery.

marry popins is the only one I can think of. I'm not sure if thomas the train has any conflict. Hope you can find something.

My 4 yr old loves Curious George and Winnie the Pooh movies...Veggie Tales are a big hit around here as well as anything Mickey Mouse! Hope that helps!

YOu can get DVDs with episodes of sesame street, or the wiggles and such. Those usually aren't scarey. They have some cute sesame street movies out too.

How about Veggie Tales? My daughter loves those and they have great messages in there too. As a bonus, they are fun for parents too. :)
Hope it all works out well - I appreciate your being alert and sensitive to the fact that much of what is considered "popular" entertainment is not really appropriate or good for kids and can be scary or give bad messages (or both).

I know this sounds cheesy but I got these free movie with a toy trash truck and my kids (boy and girl) cant get enough. It is not a cartoon at all and is about where the garbage goes. My daughter actually requests this at bed time because it doesn;t give her bad dreams. It is only 30-45 minutes and I was just gonna throw it away but my husband put it on. I saw the first couple minutes and thought no way is this gonna fly but they ask for it now. You can look at www.littlehardhats.com Not sure if this will work for movie day but I am really impressed on how well my kids like it.
I honestly can't think of anything that doesnt have something that may bring up an issue except maybe Dragon Tales, but if dragons/dinousars are a problem that may not work.

What about Care Bears or Barney?

Does "Winnie Pooh" scare her? There's "The Tigger Movie" and "Piglets Big Adventure". I know their both Disney, but I don't think there's anything "Scary" so to say. I think their both about self discovery, and finding your own place in the group. It may not be what the teacher meant, but maybe even one (or some) of the kids Sing-Along videos.

You may also want to suggest to her teacher that maybe 2 choices would be better: one room has the movie, the other room they can read a (somewhat long) book or have "open craft table" time. This would allow for your daughter to have the choice if she got too scared. If that's not an option, maybe you, dad, or Grandma could pick her up at half day or just keep her home that day.

Maybe even point out that studies show that Pre-Schoolers do not have the ability to understand the difference of fiction and reality. If the see it happen, to them it IS real! The only shows I really allow my two year old to watch are "Higgly Town Heros", "Mickey Mouse Club House", "Handy Manny", and "Little Bear". If any of these have movies also, they shouldn't be scary at all. (Scariest is Little Bear.)

what about mary poppins, or poohs hefalump movie. Also i think they have a movie from the show its a big big world which might be fun and no conflict. That is a hard question though because most movies do have some sort of conflict. I don't think it's necessarily a bad or scary thing, because we learn from conflict and it isn't always scary in little kids movies.

You should try the Sesame Beginnings. My son has two DVDs and he loves them. They have lots of songs that he likes to dance to.
