I have a 2nd grader that has struggled with reading from the very beginning. He was tested and enrolled in the Dyslexia phonics program offered by Wylie ISD and has improved over the year. I want to find a summer reading program or camp focused on Dyslexia and/or ADHD, that is fun for kids. I'm hoping having fun/stress-free reading, will instill a love of reading & help maintain his reading level. I appreciate any advice or help given and thank you in advance.

What can I do next?

This place specializes in kids with sensory disorders. I have no idea if the do any reading programs, but they writing clinic is so awesome. They maybe willing to try something out with you even if it is not something normally do.
They have a gym they use in conjuction with thier teaching.

I would looke into Southwest Academy in Allen. They do have a summer multisensory program. They use Take Flight, so I'd make sure that is the program in Wylie as well. Good luck.

Dear A.,

I don't think anyone would argue the point that there are some processes in the brain not working perfectly that are causing your son to struggle. His issues with reading and school are the symptoms of some disorganization in the processes of seeing and visually understanding information.

Also of note is that Dr. David Sousa, in the book How the Brain Learns to Read, presents solid research that concludes that up to 80% of children diagnosed with dyslexia have auditory processing struggles. This is something rarely addressed by traditional programs and one of the limitations in their success record.

I would love to invite you to a seminar this Saturday (May 30) about brain development. During this class, you will learn how the brain develops, and how to stimulate brain growth in order to improve function. As a mother, I have used the program successfully to cure my daughter of dyslexia in less than 1 school year. That was 5 years ago, and she is now in the PACE program (gifted learners) and a standout on the track team and the only person from her whole middle school to be selected for All-Region Mixed Choir. Bottom line---she is doing beautifully when every day used to be a HUGE struggle.

Please private message me if you would like more info about the class.

I would call Scottish Rite and see what they offer. Schottish Rite provides the Dyslexia program for the Wylie ISD. In my opinion, Wylie ISD has one of the best phonics programs around (We moved to the Wylie ISD when my middle son was in 4th grade....and he was on a first grade reading level....and they got him caught up to at least his grade level by the end of the year. He is now in ninth grade and doing very well. He took the reading TAKS test last year for the first time and passed it!

Because of that, I would trust whatever Scottish Rite offers for dyslexic children!
