Hi Mom's

I have terrible acid reflux and am look for a natural alternative. I have changed my diet, drink lots of water, and am losing weight. My doctor put me on a prescription medication that has me so screwed up mentally and physically, I am at my wits ends. I am hoping someone has had success with natural remedies and can help.

What can I do next?

I can't imagine what meds for Acid Reflux are messing with you. You should tell the doc any side affects and if there's no relief, maybe its something else? I have controlled my stomach acid discomfort by never lying down with any food in my stomach. No water or food 4 hours before bed (I can get away with 2 -3 hours but not unless its controlled) and eating small amounts at a time giving my stomach time to pass the food on. Any relaxation methods you can do help, too. I started yoga. Love it and have benefits way beyond my stomach. I also have had gall bladder symptoms that seemed to benefit the AR remedies, as well as taking meat out of my diet, all fats except olive oil and other mono fats like avocado. Lemon, romaine lettuce, pears and radishes for some reason helped those symptoms. I did that "cleanse" for a 2 week period and it helped a lot. I'm not bothered by spicy foods. But fat and gluten aggravate my acids the most. Pizza is guaranteed pain and bloat. Seems to take forever to digest. I believe each individual has a diet right for them, and a standard AR diet may not be targeted well to you. Consider a nutritionist (not one through an MD, a real one) to get what's right for you. Milk could be a culprit. That bothers me, too. Good luck!

There are so many extra chemicals in medications now, that I too try to stay away from them. It only takes the smallest bit of the chemical to sway the body in any direction... So I can understand if say the meds are messing with you... It sounds like you have a VERY sensitive system. Changing your diet is prime key.

I highly recommend you research homeopathy or visit a naturalpath... Sometimes it takes time to find the correct combination or type of homeopathic that can work for your body; which is why many state homeopathics do not work for them. I take them to help with the lingering pain of my Rheumatoid Arthritis, Chronic Sinuses and Migraines. It does work, but not like an OTC or RX pill.

Another route you may try: Reflexology. Or have a 'simplified' massage session that contains Reflexology to address your body, the Acid Reflux/ GERD and then have a massage directly on you stomach (it is hard to find therapists that do work the stomach in this manner.). It is always to your pressure; so do not worry that it would be painful.

Herbs can help also... you just need to research to your symptoms. Again... Natural "medications" take longer to respond sometimes than our conventional medications.

Good Luck and Feel Better Soon!

Here are a few ideas for you, I'm a nurse and this is what we tell patients.
put the head of your bed up on blocks. Stop drinking Caffeine and juice (too much acid). Eat less citrus fruits and tomatoes. Stop eating at least 2 hours before you go to bed. Eat smaller meals more frequently. good luck, I hope you feel better

Be tested for H. Pylori. It is a simple test. Symptoms look just like Acid reflux. My husband had it and was taking tums non stop. Nothing seemed to work. He heard about it from his dad who got the test and got rid of it as well. Good luck!

ALL and ANY prescription med can mess with you. i have had thee worst reflux before too---but only when I am pregnant. I have it the entire pregnancy with all three pregnancies and it causing extreme nausea/vomitting. I was put on Aciphex (yes, even while pregnant). I HATED the idea of meds but was beyond desparate...my pregnancies are horrible and the reflux was insult to injury. It helped for a while, but after a couple weeks it started causing really bad stomach aches 20 min after I would take it AND I would get all mentally weird (anxious, weepy !!???). I decided to start back on my natural ways and found something that actually worked, which was impressive seeing as my reflux was pretty bad.

This will sound crazy, but one teaspoon of baking soda mixed in with (Organic, unfiltered) apple cider vinegar before bed...and during the day it was just diluted apple cider vinegar with each meal (no baking soda). It really did work, AND it gave me energy. The Whole Foods 365 store brand tasted the best, by far. Trader Joes came in second. Bragg's (the brand that actually has a whole book written on it) was way too strong-tasting for me.

I know, "vinegar for reflux"???? It sounds crazy, but the reason it works is because a lot of reflux is from not ENOUGH acid in the stomich to digest the food, therefore it sits/ferments and comes back up after some time. Drinking the a.c.v. with your meal helps to digest the food so it won't come back up later. The addition of baking soda is for bedtime because you will not be eating, and baking soda is GREAT for reflux but interferes with digestion (so you don't want to take it when you are eating).Give it a try.It takes a couple days for full effect, but it really did work for me! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about it---I am a HUGE advocate of avoiding meds whenever possible.

I had this problem a few years ago and had great relief with enzymes. I am a Shaklee distributor and I recommend EZ Gest. There are many enzymes on the market, but they do not all give the same results. Do you research on the company and their raw materials before you make your purchase. You can view EZ Gest here http://www.shaklee.net/safeforyou/product/20633. You may also want to think about a probiotic, http://www.shaklee.net/safeforyou/product/20639. A probiotic replaces the healthy bacteria in your small intestine. It also helps boost your immune system! Let me know if you need anything or have any other questions for me.
