Seeking Neighbor Dog Advice

There is one run down house in our neighborhood. They have two dogs. Story is the man is strange. His dogs show up in our yard on occassion and I love them, pet them, and give them snacks (actually only one comes over and he spent the day with us while I thought he was lost, made signs, and took care of him, only to go knocking on doors later that evening and to find he had gone unmissed from accross the street). Now this neighbor is gone for three weeks. His dogs are able to escape from two holes in the fence. They wonder and come loiter at our house. I love animals, but I cannot take over here. He growled at my 11 month old today and though I know he is likely to be injured left to wonder , I cannot take him in. (the reason I know neighbor gone is that there are 1/2 dozen notices on his door from the water co. and I asked around). I let myslef into his back yard (thats why i know about the two holes in fences) to make sure dogs had water and food. They do, but not by much. I will continue to check on them. Sweat little dogs. What would you do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called a shelter. My local animal rescue defers these situations to the local sherif. My concern is that the dogs will end up in an animal shelter where they will eventually be euthanized (they are old dogs). I don't believe the dogs are abused. I think they are loved, but right now neglected. Yesterday one got out all day and came to my house a half dozen times. The other likes to stay put in his yard. If I had faith that they would be placed in a better situation, I would not hesitate to call authorities. Animal control has its place, but has its focus in public safety. Right now my focus is what is best for the animal. You all have more faith in the system than I do. I'm still trying to find the best solution for everyone.

Update:

Sounds like someone may have picked up the dogs this morning. they were not in the yard today and upon asking more neighbors, he had mentioned he was leaving and the dogs were going elsewhere. So glad I took the time and did not call animal control. Upon further research, that would have been death sentence for the dogs.

Call animal control. These are neglected animals.

If you can catch them in your yard and then call the ASPCA... they can take the dogs in as strays... Not that it matters much.

Or since you're now afraid for your little one's safety... try to catch a time when both dogs are in their own yard, block the holes and call the ASPCA then and tell them that the dogs might have been abandoned. There are specific requirements that an owner must meet (food, clean water, and appropriate shelter), so if you know there's one of those things that is missing, then you already have a good excuse to call.

Either way, I'd call and have someone with some "authority" check in on the dogs.

Call the ASPCA or other type of animal control. If the one growled at your baby, they might not even be that friendly if they get hungry. The owner seems to have abandoned them, and they deserve a chance at a good loving home that will watch them and take care of them.
Sad that people can just do that. I would just call the ASPCA and tell them what is going on. I would also call the ASPCA so that I do not have the burden of their possibility of being hit by a car/otherwise injured on my conscious.
Best wishes!

Call the ASPCA about animal cruelty and neglect/abandonment. They can charge your neighbor with those crimes against the animals and take them, get them vet care then try to re-home them.

Call animal control. I hate people who take in pets and don't take care of them properly! Hopefully, your neighbor will be cited for neglect.

Call them and find out what they can do...if the dogs are wandering the streets - it could lead to an accident or someone getting hurt....

Call animal control or the police in your area immediately. They are neglected at the very least, and likely abandoned. Dogs that are loose are dangerous and unpredictable. They are a danger to themselves and, as another response suggested, they could become a danger to people, especially children, if they get hungry enough. It is not your responsibility to take care of these dogs. I don't care how cute they are. Run, don't walk to the phone and call the authorities!

My neighbor across the street had surgery and died. No one knew about it for the longest time, well actually until I called code enforcement about the yard. They let us know when they came to clean it up that he had passed away and they were searching for relatives to take the property. It sat empty for nearly 6 months until they just finally were able to sell it off.

I would check with everyone around there to see if anyone knew more about the neighbor. If he had a friend, if he had family, etc....if not them I'd find homes for the animals myself. I'd just tell the man they ran off if he ever comes home. I see strays all the time and I have a friend who is softhearted, well 2 friends like this actually. I always call them if I see animals that need care. They are compassionate and care very well for them. Take them to the vet and everything. I know they could find good homes or be the good home for good dogs. Someone you know might know of a family like this.

Hello, Unfortunately, this man has probably abandoned these precious dogs. You might just have to put them in your backyard and call animal control. Hopefully, they will then be put up for adoption and find caring families to take them home.
Good luck.

I have not read the other answers, but if I were in your siuation, I would try to block the holes, so they cannot get out and then come by daily to make sure they have water and food. i think that is the best you can do, i would try to talk to the owner's dogs in a kind way and see if you can help so that are not neglected, that's if you want to take that on.
