My family is about to make a move to further west to the Agoura/Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks area. Can anyone give me personal insight into which area has the best public schools elementary through high school? We'd like to focus on the top areas in our home search. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
If you go to the website www.Greatschools.com you can type in the areas you are looking at and compare schools. It's a great site and I used it a lot when my daughter wanted to go to Westlake High.

As everyone has said, you really can't go wrong with any of the schools in the area you are looking at. We are currently at Westlake Hills Elementary and love it. The principal and parents are VERY involved and the teachers are wonderful. It is the first school I've been to where everyone I have talked to has had nothing but good things to say about the school.
I don't know much about the middle schools, although I do see a lot of positive articles in THE Acorn (the local paper) about Lindero Canyon Middle School. I believe Westlake High and Thousand Oaks high were given high State and possibly even national rankings.
One thing to keep in mind, 2 elementary schools are going to be closed starting Fall of 2009 in the Conejo Valley Unified School district due to declining enrollment. So if you are looking for a neighborhood school that you can walk to keep an eye on the school closures. An original list of schools they were looking at was announced but due to much parent protest the board is reevaluating which schools they are going to choose from. They are having a meeting on March 4th to announce their new recommendations for which schools to close. I don't know when they plan to make their final decision.

I live in Thousand Oaks. My kids (11+5) go to Ladera Elementary. I love the school, as does everybody I know who goes there. It's a small school, feels almost like a private school. I feel that my children get the attention needed and it's nice to always see familiar faces (adults as well as children) around.

I have a friend who is very happy with Sumac Elementary. The scores may not be as high as some in the area, but she says all the teachers are lovely and it is a great community. Depending on where you live you can either go to AE Wright or Lindero Canyon, both of which are highly thought of, especially their music departments. I'm not sure how Agoura High is, however. You can always go on the website greatschools.com and see what is said about area schools there.

I am a graduate of Yerba Buena Elementary, Lindero Canyon Middle School, and Agoura High School, and have to say, I have not seen a better school district in all my adult years. I currently work at a private school in the Valley that charges a minimum $23,000 for tuition, and honestly, I've not yet seen how it's any different than the public schools I attended. I strongly recommend the area- you can't go wrong!
If you want a public school you can't go wrong with any of the schools in the Las Virgenes, Oak Park and Conejo School districts. You can go to greatschools.org and find info on any school you want. It is a great resource. I believe these districts are the top districts in the state.

I have been doing research as well because my family is considering moving out there FOR the schools! They are more than double the grade compared to LAUSD schools. You can't go wrong!!! Google the report card for the Conejo School District and you'll see, it's amazing! Congrats and good luck!
