Seeking Personal Therapist/counselor

I am in search of a counselor or therapist to work on some personal issues. I'm realizing now that I have a little girl of my own, I need to work through some of my baggage before she gets any older, and so that I can be a good role model for her. Does anyone have any recommendations for someone that I could work with? I would prefer to talk to a female. We live in El Sobrante/Richmond and I'd like to find someone within 10-15 miles if possible. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I know several people who have nothing but good things to say about this therapist. She has several areas of expertice, and is a mother and grandmother. She runs group therapy for teens and does individual therapy for adults and families... hope this helps

I know of an excellent therapist in Benicia who specializes in working with moms. Her name is Carrie Todd. She also provides on-site childcare which is an added bonus. Here is her contact info: http://therapy4moms.com/.

Best of luck to you!

Hi B.,

Good for you to be addressing these issues now before your daughter gets older. So many of us neglect ourselves until our lives become so chaotic that there is no other choice or until our kids are grown and we realize that we've forgotten who we are!

I am a mom, step-mom, and therapist and I devote most of my practice to working with moms. I even have a child care room in my office. Unfortunately, my office is not as close as you were hoping for. My primary office is in Benicia and I work in Oakland one day a week. Even if this is too far for you to come on a regular basis, I do offer some classes and workshops that you may want to come to occasionally (I just did one called "Pruning the Family Tree" that is about looking at the family you grew up in and choosing how you'd like your family to be similar or different).

I don't personally know anyone working in your area, but I would be happy to put a request for referrals out to the east bay association for Marriage and Family Therapists. I'm sure I could come up with some names for you, but I could not personally vouch for their work. It might be a place to start, though. Let me know if you'd like me to do that. Feel free to email me with any questions or concerns.

Good luck on this journey. It can be challenging at times - but ultimately very rewarding. And I truly believe that the best gift we can give to our children is our own happiness and wellbeing. There is no better way to teach them how to be happy themselves!

Warmly,
C. Todd

You should go to the website of the California Board of Psychology and email or call them for referrals in your area. Anyone can call themselves a "counselor", this way you make sure you have a trained Psy.D. (doctor of Psychology), MFT (marriage and family therapist) or LCSW (licensed clinical social worker). Remember that you are the customer---if you don't "click" with a therapist on one or two visits, don't be hesitant to try someone else. It's kind of like dating!
good luck,
a licensed clinical psychologist (and mommy)---but in S.F.!

HI B.

My husband and I see Rose Fox, Ph.D. I have also seen her by myself over the course of the last 7 years. She is wonderful, her late husband was also a therapist and I originally saw him beginning in 1999, so I 've known them a long time and respect them both tremendously.

Rose is located at: 7311 Gladys Ave, El Cerrito 94530 ###-###-####. She works out of her home and works on weekends. Feel free to let her know J. Fallon referred you.
