We home school and are looking for a phonics DVD that does not contain talking animals or animals that do things on the DVD that they don't do in nature (e.g. turtles walking on two hind legs, etc.)

We have searched online extensively and in local educational stores, but to no avail. In addition to specific referrals, any referrals to specialty stores outside of the Decatur area or specialized areas online would be helpful, too.

HI M.,

Have you looked into the Phonics Game? I taught both my daughter's to read by using it. The DVDs are simply a pretty lady interacting with a few kids explaining things and the rest is instructional on specific card games that I played with the girls...they really loved learning that way.

It cost around $250 from the company but I've seen it as cheap as $50 on ebay...

Regards,

M.

I'm very curious about why you would want a phonics DVD without unnatural acting animals. As one responder said, that keeps their attention. For children to want to watch it it needs to be movie like. If you really don't want something with anthropomorphism I would take a different approach. One suggestion I have is a song A says ah, A says ah, every letter makes a sound, A says ah (farmer in the dell).

Try the "Brainy Baby" series. I know they have flashcards and videos. Hope this helps.

I agree with Julia. Kids have VERY active imaginations. Use that to help them learn.

Hi M.,

I wonder why you want a DVD that does not contain animals doing things they do not do in nature? Children have very active imaginations and short attention spans. Talking animals keep them interested. e.g. the success of Disney!?! I think it is important to make learning seamless from the rest of their lives. They watch a cute video of talking frogs, and suddenly they know the ABC's and the sounds they make- Sounds great!

What would the disc you are looking for look like? A teacher in a classroom, or under a tree, reading the letters and saying the sound- would that keep your kids attention for very long. If it does- super! You have very special kids.

My kids have learned alot from the Leap Frog series- lots of songs and repetition but it does not meet your criteria.
